Caitlyn Jenner has spoken out following news of the death of O.J. Simpson, and her brutal response has left fans shocked.

Simpson's family shared the news of the former American football star's death on Thursday, confirming that he'd passed away aged 76 following a battle with cancer.

They wrote in a statement shared on social media: "On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer.

"He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace. The Simpson Family."

While Simpson found fame as one of the greatest running backs of all time after a decade in the NFL as part of the Buffalo Bills and the San Francisco 49ers, after being drafted by the Bills in 1969 after playing college football for USC.

However, his glittering sporting career ended up being overshadowed by the brutal murder of his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her close friend Ron Goldman, in 1994.

Simpson was the prime suspect in the case but was acquitted in 1995 following a long trial where he was represented by Robert Kardashian, Kris Jenner's former husband. Simpson was later found guilty in a civil trial in 1996, and Brown's family was awarded damages.

At the time of the trial, Kris Jenner - who was best friends with Nicole Brown Simpson before her killing - was married to Caitlyn Jenner, who has been a vocal critic of the football player.

Following the news of Simpson's death breaking, Jenner shared a tweet expressing her thoughts, simply writing: "Good riddance. #OJSimpson."

It's not the first time Jenner has criticized Simpson publicly, admitting in 2021 while appearing on the show Big Brother VIP in Australia that she believed he had "gotten away" with killing his wife and Goldman.

The former Olympian said that the trial "was an extraordinarily difficult time," explaining: "Nicole was Kris' best friend. Had been for a long time.

"I was at Nicole's house two days before the murder. Obviously he did it, and he got away with it, and at one point he even told Nicole, 'I'll kill you and get away with it 'cause I'm O.J. Simpson.' And Nicole relayed that on to Kris at one point, and unfortunately, she was right."

She added: "We were at the courthouse. We're watching what's going on in the other room, and even after the not guilty verdict, the first thing Kris turns around to me and goes, 'We should have listened to Nicole. She was right right from the beginning.'"

In footage from the time of the trial, Kris Jenner was also seen saying: "She knew. She told me. [She said] 'He’s gonna kill me and he’s gonna get away with it.' [She said it] through the years."

Goldman's father, Fred, also shared his thoughts after Simpson's death, telling The Independent: "It is a reminder of how long Ron has been gone and how much we miss him.

"The only thing that is truly important are the victims. There is nothing that is more important than the loss of my son and the loss of Nicole."

The 83-year-old added to NBC News that Simpson's death was "no great loss to the world," and "has nothing to do with closure."

Attorney Gloria Allred, who represented Nicole Brown Simpson’s family during the trial, said: "O.J. Simpson did kill Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman, may they rest in peace."

She added: "I don’t mourn for O.J. Simpson. I do mourn for Nicole Brown Simpson and her family, and they should be remembered," believing "the system failed Nicole Brown Simpson and failed battered women everywhere."

Among the few tributes to Simpson was Alan Dershowitz, the prominent US attorney who served as an adviser on his legal team, who said: "I knew he was very sick, so I'm upset that he died.

"I got to know him fairly well during the trial. It was one of the most divisive trials in American history along racial lines. He'll always be remembered for the Bronco chase, for the glove, and for the moment of acquittal."
