Blue Ivy breaks key rule as she makes Met Gala debut alongside parents Beyonce and Jay-Z
Blue Ivy Carter made her Met Gala debut at 14, sparking online conversation.
The teenager, who was accompanied by her parents and music legends Beyoncé and Jay-Z, hit the red carpet and shocked onlookers.
In the fashion world, the Met Gala is the biggest night of the year and is often described as the "world's most exclusive party."
Known as the premier fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute, the event's co-chairs include Anna Wintour, Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, and Venus Williams.
Invitations are like gold dust in the celebrity stratosphere, but Blue Ivy was given a chance to strut her stuff this year on the red carpet.
While her look got fashionistas talking, viewers and fans of the events were quick to point out that she shouldn't have been there in the first place.
What rule did Blue Ivy break?
Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue and the event's only permanent chairperson, announced in 2018 that nobody under the age of 18 was allowed to attend the event.
While the rule is fairly new, it seems to have been enforced in recent years.
Back in 2018, actress Maddie Ziegler told The Hollywood Reporter she wanted to attend the Met Gala, but that she “can’t go because I’m not old enough.”
In response, event organizers told the publication that “it’s not an appropriate event for people under 18.”
But this rule would quickly become less enforced, as those behind the event clarified that exceptions would be made for minors who were accompanied by their parents.
An exception would be made for Blue Ivy, whose mother is a co-chair of the event, while another co-chair, Nicole Kidman, was also seen with her own teenage daughter.
Sunday Rose Urban, 17, was seen in numerous snaps with her mother, despite being under the supposed minimum age.
What did Blue Ivy wear?
For this year's theme, which was “Costume Art,” Blue wore a cream bubble-hem strapless gown by Balenciaga, which featured a structured bustier top.
The 14-year-old also wore sculptural gold glittery heels that matched her mom’s embellished skeleton-inspired dress.
Accessory-wise, she also wore a diamond riviere necklace, rings, and a hand chain.
Blue Ivy also had a cropped bomber jacket to match that she wore just off her shoulders, in addition to cateye sunglasses.
Speaking about her daughter on the red carpet, Beyoncé said: “She looks so beautiful. It’s incredible to be able to share it with her.”
“She was ready! She is ready,” the mom added.
Has anyone under 18 attended the Met Gala before?
Despite it being widely reported that there is a strict 18+ rule for those attending the event, Blue Ivy isn't alone in breaking the mold.
Sisters Dakota and Elle Fanning attended the Met Gala in years past, all while being under 18 themselves.
This adds to co-chair Nicole Kidman's 17-year-old daughter's attendance this year.
