Eva Mendes has been famously tight-lipped about her relationship with fellow Hollywood actor, Ryan Gosling, who she has been with since 2011. The couple have two children, five-year-old Esmerelda, and three-year-old Amada.

The 46-year-old rarely posts pictures of Gosling and their two children, preferring to use the platform to share images related to her work, and to interact with fans.

She took to Instagram yesterday to post a photo of one of her favorite works of art, and it sparked a conversation surrounding the content she chooses to post online, and why it rarely features her partner or their children.

On Sunday, she posted an image of Love is Blind by René Magritte, and captioned the post: "During these times, I'm so confused about what to post so I'm going to post things that move me in hopes that they move you as well. Since I don't post my about immediate family, and it feels so wrong to post about work, here you go."

"I've always loved this one and it feels especially relevant right now. sending lots of love out there," she added.

Responding to a fan who asked in the comments why she doesn't post about her immediate family, the Hitch actress asserted that she liked her privacy, saying that she believes her children are too young to consent to their images being posted online.

"I have always had a clear boundary when it comes to my man and my kids," she explained. "I'll talk about them of course, with limits, but I won't post pictures of our daily life."

Watch Eva Mendes speak to Ellen DeGeneres about her children:

"And since my children are still so little and don't understand what posting their image really means, I don't have their consent And I won't post their image until they're old enough to give me consent. As far as Ryan and I, it just works for us this way, To stay private."
