Gordon Ramsay issues warning over the one part of a restaurant menu you should never order from
Celebrity chef and world-renowned angry man Gordon Ramsay has revealed his top tips for eating out and the one dish you should never order from a restaurant.
The star at the helm of Hell’s Kitchen named the ‘soup of the day’ as his don't-touch dish.
Widely known by hospitality insiders as a way for kitchens to use up on-the-turn stock and yesterday’s uneaten leftovers, soup is a popular starter made of the previous day’s special.
Gordon told Town and Country to: "Ask what yesterday's soup du jour was before today's special. It may be the case that it's the soup du month."
The server always knows best
His best advice for ordering the best dishes on the menu is simply to ask your server what they like best.
Restaurant staff are the people who eat in the establishment most frequently and will likely taste each dish before it even gets added to the menu.
Speaking from experience of four decades of working in restaurants, he said: "It depends on the restaurant, but servers tend to taste most of the dishes on the menu and can give you insight into what the chef has added and what the locals have."
He went on to share the “red flags” he watches out for when eating out.
The top chef and owner of multiple restaurant chains warned diners to be dubious of venues that boast about being the “world’s best” or claiming dishes are “famous” or the “best in the country”.
Another big no-no according to Gordon is a long list of specials, because the more offerings there are, the less likely they are to be exceptional.
Speaking to The Daily Mail, he explained: “Specials are there to disappear throughout the evening. When they list 10 specials, that's not special.”
Why you should take Gordon's tips
If you are going to trust anyone’s advice on how to eat out, it should probably be Gordon Ramsay’s, as the chef has worked in kitchens for over 40 years.
He began his training under legendary French chef Marco Pierre White and at just 27 became head chef of a restaurant which earned two Michelin stars within three years.
Since then, he has starred in his own hugely popular TV shows Hell’s Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares, and even had a six-part Netflix documentary series made about his life released earlier this year.
He also owns his own restaurant group, Gordon Ramsay Restaurants, which has venues across the world, including in Dubai, Singapore, and Malaysia.
