Grimes has revealed a new face tattoo, and fans are very divided over it - but some can't even see it at all.
The 37-year-old musician, real name Claire Boucher, took to social media this week to unveil the latest addition to her body art collection.
“I got a face tattoo a few months ago and literally nobody noticed, not even my parents lol,” she wrote on X. “(I don't know why) this face tattoo is imperceptible but just for the record it's my fave tat (sic).”
Opening up about her new ink on Instagram, Grimes wrote: "Spent like ten years emotionally working up to a face tattoo but I guess I drew on my face too much and literally no one noticed, not even my parents, not even after the video lol."
The singer continued: “That said I think @glyphomancer is onto something truly novel and innovative with her work esp on face tats - there's a true beauty, delicacy, and innovation here imo (in my opinion). Feel like tats are in a crazy renaissance period that's sort of under appreciated atm (at the moment).”
The new ink is a dark red ring circling her left eye. Despite its placement, the design has gone largely unnoticed.
The delicate facial tattoo was designed by artist Glyphomancer, who specializes in a unique tattoo style known as cybersigilism - a genre that fuses ancient sigil symbology with a futuristic, cyberpunk aesthetic.
Grimes praised Glyphomancer’s creative vision, stating: “I think @glyphomancer is onto something truly novel and innovative with her work esp on face tats—there’s a true beauty, delicacy, and innovation here imo.”
She seems especially drawn to the evolution of tattoo artistry at large: “Feel like tats are in a crazy renaissance period that’s sort of under appreciated atm.”
While Grimes may be loving her new ink, reactions online have been wildly mixed.
Many fans were quick to admit they simply couldn’t see the tattoo, leading to a flurry of confused - and sometimes hilarious - comments.
“Shoook,” one person wrote.
Another chimed in: “Is the face tattoo in the room with us??”
A third commenter took a more biting tone: “I remember my first Ringworm.”
The bewilderment continued: “You could have the coolest face tattoo ever but you have this instead. I’m sorry but I’m so confused.”
Not everyone was critical. A wave of support also poured in from Grimes’ fanbase, applauding the subtlety and style of the tattoo.
“I love it especially with the blonde hair,” one person gushed.
Another added: “It looks so great on youuu,” while others chimed in with “I dig it,” and: “Gorgeous, like always.”
This isn’t the first time Grimes has flirted with facial ink. Three years ago, she teased the idea on social media, writing in a now-deleted post: “I am very seriously considering getting a white ink tattoo on my face next week. Any thoughts? It feels like it’s time.”
She later followed through on her ambition, sharing that she’d “spent like ten years emotionally working up to a face tattoo.”
Her face tattoo joins a growing collection of unique body art, including a large red ink leg tattoo debuted in 2023. At the time, she expressed her desire to be “totally covered” in “alien” tattoos.

Grimes has explained the design process behind her "beautiful alien scars" tattoo on Instagram.
Elon Musk's girlfriend, 33, revealed her tattoo on the social media website on Sunday, prompting a mixed response from her fans, with some describing it as "beautiful" and others comparing it to spaghetti.
The unusual tattoo is made of white ink, and Grimes shared a breakdown of artist Nusi Quero's design process - a process she was clearly pleased with, having dubbed him "an alien brain."
Check out Grimes' new video on her tattoo below:Nusi explained that he and Tweak T co-designed the tattoo, and this took place after he was sent "base shapes" on an iPad by Tweak T, which he went on to embellish via a mathematical process.
He wrote: "Drew the base shapes on an iPad and then emailed me the image file. I turned it into 3D geomotery, selected vertices on the shape and guided and drew the embellishments along and around the shapes that he laid down first...
"[He did these] with a series of procedural operators (math rules) in a way that I felt spoke to his shapes and Grimes. I then sent it back to him as a png overlay and etc etc and they went in on it immediately full on 1 take 1 session. Ahh. [sic]"
Pocedural operators are "a general imperative programming device."
"A procedural operator is analogous to the mathematical notion of a 'functional operator', and can be described in terms of a computational process which can be initiated, suspended, resumed, and terminated," Science Direct reports.
Alongside Nusi's post, Grimes shared another photo of her new tattoo in all its glory.
The singer, who welcomed her first child with Musk last year, captioned the first shared snap of her new tattoo: "Full back in white ink by @tweakt w sum help from the alien computer brain of @nusi_quero
"Don't have a good pic cuz it hurts too much and I need to sleep haha, and it’'l be red for a few wks , but gna be beautiful alien scars [sic]
"Hope everyone's having a good day."
While alien scars might not be to everyone's taste, this tattoo comes after Grimes revealed that she plans to relocate to Mars to help colonize the red planet after she turns 50.

Grimes recently shared an image of her that appears to indicate that she has undergone a cosmetic procedure.
On Saturday, September 17, the Canadian singer - whose real name is Claire Elise Boucher - took to Twitter to share a picture of her apparently bruised face all bandaged up. The photo appears to show her in bed, dressed in a hospital gown.
Without revealing what she'd had done, the 34-year-old mom of two wrote alongside the snap: "I did smthn crazy!"
It is likely that Grimes may have undergone elf ear surgery as last month saw her tweet her interest in such a procedure.
She wrote to her followers on August 16: "Also, has anyone done elf ear mods with a good outcome? I'm scared about ear cartilage having a hard time healing. Especially as a musician this surgery seems risky but I've wanted it my whole life. Curious about people's experiences! [sic]"
Amongst those weighing in was Grimes' ex-partner Elon Musk, who responded the following day: "The downside of elf ear surgery probably outweighs the upside."
Elf ear surgery entails sculpting the cartilage in the upper part of an individual's ears in order to make it appear pointy in a way that resembles elf ears.
In any case, Grimes' recent Twitter photo garnered a mixed response, with one person speculating alongside a crying emoji: "Lip fillers and facelift? What other things she do."
Another wrote: "Pls not elf ears."
However, other fans were supportive, with one chiming in to write: "Do what makes you happy!! Can’t wait to see what you’ve done. Guessing elf ears and maybe pulled back the eyes to be more elf like. "
This comes after Grimes revealed recently that she was once accused of throwing a snowball at the late Queen's car.
In a Twitter thread, Grimes wrote: "Once the queen was gna drive past my high school on a snow day, and all day the teachers threatened us no snow balls.
"As she drove past it was dead silent, all teachers high alert. And just as the procession was almost past a single snowball arced from the crowd and hit her car."
She continued: "Entire crowd erupted into insanity. I was wrongfully accused and had to spend many hours in interrogations, still to this day the culprit remains unknown. But it was glorious."

Grimes has taken to Instagram to show off her unusual and painful-looking "alien scars" back tattoo.
Sharing a picture of the new inking with her 1.7 million followers, the singer showed off the elaborate, scar-colored tattoo with a full picture of her back.
It was captioned: "Full back in white ink by @tweakt w sum help from the alien computer brain of @nusi_quero
"Don't have a good pic cuz it hurts too much and I need to sleep haha, and it’'l be red for a few wks , but gna be beautiful alien scars [sic]
"Hope everyone's having a good day."
The unusual tattoo did not go unnoticed on the social media website, and fans of Elon Musk's girlfriend were quick to praise the tattoo for looking so cool – but also comment on just how painful it appeared to be.
One Instagram user wrote: "This looks painful to get."
A second added: "Looks like something a Lazer printer would draw."
A third compared the tattoo to spaghetti.
Meanwhile, a fourth joked: "I fell into a rose bush once too..."
However, while Grimes' new tattoo might not be to everyone's taste, not all Instagram users were so critical.
A fan remarked alongside a heart-eyes emoji: "It looks like some cool scars, makes me want to get something similar."
A second simply praised the tattoo for being so unique.
News of Grimes' new tattoo comes after she and Elon Musk welcomed their first child last year and caused a storm with their equally unusual choice of name.
Grimes explained the meaning of the baby's name on Twitter.
However, in May of last year, the singer revealed that she had to change her son's name because of Californian laws and confirmed it to an Instagram follower.
"Did you change the baby name because of Californian laws? What is the baby's new name?" questioned an Instagram user.
Grimes replied: "X Æ A-Xii".
It is believed that the baby's name is pronounced "X Ash Archangel", with one of Grimes' followers adding: "Nice! Just removed the numbers to conform to California law."

Billie Eilish has recently unveiled a massive new tattoo and it seems as though people are making the same joke about it.
Taking to Instagram, the 21-year-old singer posted a photo dump revealing a new piece of body art which took up a large portion of her back.
On the photo-sharing platform, hundreds of users took to the comments to express their opinions on the back tattoo.
"Back tatt so [fire]," wrote one user, while another added: "That back tattoo tho."
A third also stated: "Without words, this is incredible."
Have a look at the post for yourselves:However, on Twitter, better known now as X, fans had an entirely different response with many poking fun of the new body art.
After popular news account, Pop Base reposted the image, a handful of social media users took to the platform to slate the ink work.
"Did she just ask for scribbles?" asked one user, while another said: "Why does this look like something an eight-year-old would do."
Others also chimed in with this Twitter user, writing: "Looks like a toddler with a marker went to town..."
Similarly, this user said: "When a toddler comes to you showing you what they just drew."
Someone else even brought up Drake's son, Adonis, stating that she had to credit the little boy.
"Looks like a child was playing with the ink on her back," this user also commented.
Big yikes.
While in the past, Eilish was pretty secretive about her body art, in the past few years, she has seemingly become more open about new pieces of work.
Back in 2020, the Grammy-award-winning artist vowed to keep her tatts a secret, stating that no one would ever see them.
"I did get a tattoo, but you'll never see it."
But after watching the video playback, the songstress admitted that she "lied again" before proceeding to open up about her once-secretive body art in a 2021 interview with Vanity Fair.
"I have three tattoos, now," Eilish admitted. "I have one here that says 'Eilish.' Yes, I love myself," she said pointing to her chest.
"I have one here — big boy here," the musician added, motioning to the right side of her rib cage. "And then, I just got this a few weeks ago, which is some fairies that are from a book that I had growing up — a little fairy book called Fairyopolis."
She showed off her left wrist and down the back of her hand, adding: "They're like my little guardian angel fairies."
While she's a self-admitted tattoo lover, she revealed her mom isn't a fan of the permanent ink.
"My mom hates tattoos," she told the outlet. "No, I'm not gonna be all tatted up, but I have some more ideas. Right now, I feel pretty satisfied. I feel like in a good zone with them."
"Give me a little more time and then I'll get another one," she added.
And her promise rang true with her new back piece.
Even though Eilish had become more open about more personal aspects about her life, like her tattoos, in the same year she told rapper Stormzy that she felt "conflicted' over the issue of oversharing.
"I feel conflicted about it," she said. "I don't always want to tell the world intimate details about my life, I don't really want people to know everything about me, but at the same time, I want people to be able to feel seen and heard if they've experienced the same things I have."
"I want to be helpful. I want people to realize that it's OK, that everyone goes through this," she added. "You can speak for people who don't have a voice."
Despite this though, she also stated that she doesn't want to spill every detail about her life to her fans.
"But also it's conflicting because sometimes you also don't want to talk about it," she explained to the British artist. "It's a tough responsibility because it's also not my responsibility. I don't owe anyone anything."
That's totally true, but we're happy that she felt like sharing her amazing, new piece of body art.
We can't wait to see if there's a follow-up!
