Celebrities on social media can often be pretty cold and aloof, you know? You follow them out of curiosity, so you can see what they're up to: but most of their posts seem to be publicity stunts or shameless self-promotion, and it's pretty rare that they ever reply. Indeed, there's honestly very little chance of you ever attracting their attention, let alone of you sliding into their DMs.

One such celebrity is Gwyneth Paltrow; who's usually the epitome of style, elegance and grace. You wouldn't imagine that she'd ever stoop so low as to laugh about a lewd meme with her fans on Instagram, let alone a lewd meme that used a picture of her to make a point either. Yet this week that's exactly what she appeared to do, proving that although she might appear to be above that kind of stuff, in reality she's low-key hilarious.

The fun began when Derek Blasberg posted a photo of Gwyneth enjoying some end-of-summer me-time by the poolside. He snapped her in a bikini, drinking a martini, smiling into the middle distance. Typical stuff right? Well, not quite. The picture was picked up and meme'd by the viral Instagram account Gay Best Friend, which gave turned the pic into an extremely dirty image macro. They captioned the picture: "Me at happy hour pretending to listen to my friends but really thinking about d*ck."

It's the sort of thing that would infuriate a lesser, pettier celebrity. I can just imagine someone more short-tempered making a furious phone call to their lawyer, before sending off a load of cease-and-desist letters. Gwyneth on the other hand took the meme in her stride, and promptly posted a comment on the page stating: "ain't that the damn truth." Wow: I honestly can't think of a better response. Way to control the narrative Gwyneth.

This isn't the first time Gwyneth has opened up about her fondness for dirty humour however. In an interview last year with CNN, Paltrow stated: "What people are surprised about me, when they meet me or work with me or hang out with me, is I have a really, really, really dirty sense of humour. People think I'm pretty buttoned-up and prim and proper, but just tell me a joke about balls or something," and in 2011 in an interview with Elle she claimed: "It's good to shock people who think of me as the prim Gwyneth Paltrow. If you speak to my friends who've known me since I was four, they'll say, 'That is her.' They always said to me, 'You're the dirtiest person in the world, and so funny. Show the world that side of you.'"

It just goes to show that sometimes the best way of dealing with an diss is to just run with it. Full marks to Gwyneth for averting what could have been a PR disaster.
