Interabled couple Hannah and Shane Burcaw share major pregnancy milestone as Shane reveals his biggest worry about becoming a dad
Interabled couple Hannah and Shane Burcaw have shared a touching pregnancy milestone as Shane revealed his biggest worry about becoming a dad.
The influencers, known online as Squirmy and Grubs, announced that they are expecting their first baby after years of fertility struggles.
"We are beyond ecstatic to announce that we’re expecting our first child this coming January!" the pair captioned a joint Instagram post shared September 8.
"Hannah is 20 weeks pregnant, and although we’ve been thoroughly enjoying this special time in privacy so far, we’ve also missed sharing all the joy with you, and there’s SO MUCH to share!" they added.
The parents-to-be are "doing great and cannot wait to begin sharing" their road to having their baby, which they will be sharing on their newly launched baby blog.
However, they explained that they will be careful about how much of their child's life they will share online.
"We want to be thoughtful and intentional about what and how we share our child with the world," they penned in the post.
Shane shares his biggest worry about becoming a dad
Shane - who has spinal muscular atrophy and uses a wheelchair - spoke candidly about one of his biggest concerns surrounding fatherhood.
In a post shared on Facebook, he wrote: "One of my biggest worries about having children is the extent to which I’ll be able to physically interact with them."
He added that this worry also extended to whether he would be able to feel their baby kicking while still in the womb.
"I know and believe that parenting and love do not require physical ability, but I still grapple with those deep down anxieties at times, especially as our baby began kicking in Hannah’s womb a few weeks ago. I hoped, but didn’t know for certain whether, I’d be able to reach my arms far enough to feel the kicking myself," he said.
But a heartwarming video shared alongside the post showed Shane getting the reassurance he had hoped for.
As he rested his hands on Hannah's growing bump, he was able to feel the baby kick.
"Guess what?" he asked. "I'm feeling the baby kick."
Hannah then chimed in to say it was Shane’s "new favorite activity".
"The baby is already stronger than I am," he quipped, while Hannah revealed that she’d been feeling the baby moving around since she was 15 weeks pregnant.
"It’s the most wild thing in the world to feel it moving around in there,” he said.
The couple shared that they know the gender of their baby, but haven’t revealed it to their followers.
Shane says much of parenting will not be affected by his disability
Shane opened up to PEOPLE about how he views fatherhood and the role his disability will play.
"One thing that has made me feel good is that they are reminding me that so much of parenting is not the physical stuff," he said. "A human being, yes, needs physical care as a baby, but a lot of parenting is about the mind and emotions and learning and love.
"My disability will not inhibit me from doing that with our kid in any way. So that’s been really reassuring for me," he added.
He also said he and Hannah are exploring products to make parenthood easier, including pillows so the baby can lie comfortably on Shane’s lap and a carrier that attaches to his wheelchair.
"I can’t wait to figure out all those little ways that we can make it work," he concluded.
