Kevin Spacey is pushing back after media reports suggested the actor was homeless following a recent interview.
In a Nov. 19 conversation with The Telegraph, the 66‑year‑old “House of Cards” star admitted that he was “living in hotels … living in Airbnbs,” and added bluntly, “I have no home.”
Those comments triggered headlines pronouncing him homeless — a description Spacey says is misleading.
Spacey opens up about "homeless" rumors
On Sunday, Nov. 23, Spacey addressed the rumours directly in an Instagram video.
He opened with: “I don't usually make it my business to correct the media; if I did, I wouldn't have time for much else.”
He went on to thank the “thousands of people who have reached out over the past few days offering me a place to stay, or have just asked if I'm OK.”
That kindness, he said, prompted him to respond — but not to placate the press. “I am truly touched by your generosity, full stop.” He insisted it “would be disingenuous of me to allow you to believe that I am indeed homeless in the colloquial sense.”
Spacey explains what he really meant
During the original Telegraph interview, Spacey acknowledged financial strain and uncertainty about his living situation.
“You get through it. In weird ways, I feel I’m back to where I first started, which is I just went where the work was. Everything is in storage, and I hope at some point, if things continue to improve, that I’ll be able to decide where I want to settle down again.
"I’m living in hotels, I’m living in Airbnbs, I’m going where the work is. I literally have no home, that’s what I’m attempting to explain.”
Spacey’s autumn of disclosure stirred confusion mostly because he used “no home,” a phrase that borders on homelessness, but — as he argues — doesn’t mean living on the street.
On Instagram he said he was not clarifying for the media, but for the fans who had offered help. He emphasized he is not “one of them” — meaning those actually living on streets or in cars. He also expressed gratitude for the few projects he’s managed to land this year, hinting at better days ahead.
The long road behind Spacey’s comeback hopes
This isn’t the first time Spacey has had to contend with scandal and upheaval. Beginning in 2017, several people came forward with sexual assault and harassment allegations.
The first to speak publicly was actor Anthony Rapp, who in an October 2017 interview said that when he was 14, Spacey made advances toward him in Spacey’s New York apartment.
Spacey has denied all accusations. Although lawsuits were filed and some went to court, no jury has convicted him.
A second British lawsuit alleging sexual abuse surfaced just months after Spacey was cleared in the criminal trial brought against him in 2023.
The scandal cost him major roles — including being dropped from “House of Cards.” At one point, Spacey even sold his Baltimore home out of necessity.
Still, the actor’s career has not been entirely derailed. He returned to acting in May 2021 and later appeared in the 2024 film “The Contract.”
In his Instagram message he hinted that interest in working with him had not entirely vanished. “We are in touch with some extremely powerful people who want to put me back to work,” he said.
But he acknowledged that progress hinges on a reluctant industry: “I will also say what I think the industry seems to be waiting for is to be given permission — by someone who is in some position of enormous respect and authority.”
Spacey once collected Oscars for “American Beauty” and “The Usual Suspects,” and by his own account, he remains hopeful that something resembling his old life might still be ahead of him.
