Lewis Capaldi praised for subtle act after Chappell Roan incident left kid 'in tears'
Lewis Capaldi has been praised for his kindness after a young fan was left "extremely shaken" following a run-in with Chappell Roan’s security team.
Catherine Harding, also known as Cat Cavelli, shared pictures of her 11-year-old daughter meeting the Scottish singer at Lollapalooza in São Paulo. Alongside the images, she wrote: "@lewiscapaldi thanks for your kindness."
The heartwarming moment came just days after Harding said her daughter’s birthday trip had been "ruined" by an encounter that left the child in tears.
Family Claims Security Confrontation Left Child Shaken
Harding explained that her daughter had spotted Roan during breakfast at their hotel, but did not approach her or even have her phone out.
"She literally didn’t do anything; she just looked at her and smiled. She came back and she actually said to me: ‘Mum, I don’t know if it’s her.’ Because obviously she looked like, you know, with her costumes and everything, she looks a little bit different," Harding said.
Despite this, Harding said a security guard approached them in an "aggressive tone" and began to "berate and scold" them while they were eating.
"Even if she did send him or she didn’t send him, I don’t know, for me it felt like it really overstepped a boundary," she added.
The experience had a lasting impact on the child, who had traveled to Brazil specifically for the show.
"We came all the way to Sao Paulo to watch the show. It was my daughter’s birthday present. She actually asked for tickets to come for her birthday present, which is a little bit ruined because we didn’t go to the show last night," Harding said.
Jorginho Frello, Harding’s husband, also spoke out, saying the incident left the girl "extremely shaken and cried a lot."
He added: "Without your fans, you would be nothing."
Backlash Grows As Mayor Weighs In
The situation quickly gained attention online, with backlash building against the 28-year-old Grammy-winning artist.
Rio de Janeiro mayor Eduardo Cavaliere even weighed in, saying Roan would not be welcome at one of the city’s biggest events.
"I mean that as long as I’m in charge of our city - this young lady @ChappellRoan will never perform at Todo Mundo no Rio! I doubt that Shakira would do that!" he wrote.
He also offered support to the family, adding: "By the way, [Frello], your little one is already the guest of honor from the organization in May!"
Roan Denies Involvement
The 'Good Luck Babe' songstress has since responded, denying any involvement in the incident and insisting she was unaware anything had happened.
"I did not ask the security guard to go up and talk to this mother and child, I did not. They did not come up to me. They weren’t doing anything. It’s unfair for security to just assume someone doesn’t have good intentions when they have no reason to believe, because there’s no action even taken," she said.
She also addressed criticism about her attitude toward fans, adding: "I do not hate children, like, that is crazy."
A statement from her representative added: "Chappell was not aware of any interaction between this mother / daughter and a third party security office," per The Independent.
"She did not see them at breakfast in her hotel, as she said in her video. She did not direct her personal security or anyone on her team to interact with them," they continued. "Chappell holds her own teams to the highest standards and has zero tolerance for any kind of aggressive behaviour towards her or her fans."
Harding, however, maintained that the man involved appeared to be connected to the singer.
"I don’t know if it was her personal security guard, but he was with her. So that is all I know," she said, adding she hopes "if it wasn’t her, that she learns to not allow the people that work for her to treat people like this."
