This weekend, fans of Miley Cyrus were rocked to their cores when they learned that the singer and her husband, Liam Hemsworth, had decided to split.

The Australian actor and brother of Marvel star, Chris Hemsworth, first met on the set of the romantic comedy movie The Last Song, and have been dating on-and-off since 2009. The couple announced their engagement in June 2012, split for a period, but then resumed their relationship, and eventually got married in an extremely private ceremony in December of 2018.

However, now they have apparently agreed to separate after Cyrus had an alleged dalliance with The Hills star, Kaitlynn Carter.

A spokesperson for the couple told People that: "Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time. Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers. They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy. [sic]"

Miley is clearly enjoying her steamy vacation:

However, Brody Jenner appeared to have some choice words for Carter and Cyrus, after he spotted them kissing during their Italian getaway. Jenner and Carter split up just over a week ago, and in the wake of the scandal, Brody took to Instagram to share a picture of himself outdoors, captioning it: "Don't let yesterday take up too much of today."

When his friend Brandon Lee suggested in the comments that he and Jenner post a pic of themselves making out, Brody stated: "Pics of Liam and I holding hands on the beach coming soon."

Outraged by this seemingly-flippant remark, fans noticed that Cyrus herself had taken to the comments to angrily tell Brody to "Go take a nap in your truck and cool off."

Last month, Miley told Elle that she shared a "modern" marriage to Hemsworth:

"I think it's very confusing to people that I'm married. But my relationship is unique. And I don't know that I would ever publicly allow people in there because it's so complex, and modern, and new that I don't think we're in a place where people would get it."

It remains to be seen whether the couple is simply separating for a period of time, or have decided to divorce entirely.
