New details have surfaced regarding gossip blogger Perez Hilton following his hospitalization earlier this month. His brother-in-law, Tom, recently shared insight into Hilton's ongoing medical treatment and current state of recovery.
Tom, who is married to Hilton's sister Barbara Lavandeira, stated that the media personality is currently receiving care for physical injuries alongside mental health treatment. The update clarifies that his recovery process involves addressing both areas simultaneously while in the hospital.
During an appearance on The Perez Hilton Podcast with Chris Booker, Tom detailed the physical aspect of the blogger's hospital stay. He explained that Hilton suffered broken bones from falling over during the August 4 incident.
On the podcast, Tom shared that Hilton was being treated for "the cutting [and] a couple of falls that happened during this process." He further explained the current focus of his care: "So, we are now just transitioning into the mental side of things."
He noted that medical professionals are monitoring Hilton closely during his stay: "Although, of course, while he’s in the hospital, while he’s being treated for his physical ailments, psychiatrists come in and check in and see how he’s doing and make sure he’s not looking to harm himself."
Questions remain regarding what triggered the event. "The actual healing, or digging into what caused this mental break as I’ve called it, hasn’t been discovered. I don’t know if it will ever be," Tom stated on the podcast.
There has been speculation that Hilton experienced sepsis psychosis during the incident. The 48-year-old was previously hospitalized for 21 days in March after developing severe sepsis that required emergency surgery. However, medical professionals have not confirmed that sepsis psychosis caused the crisis.
Speaking on Hilton's memory of the event, Tom added: "I don’t know how much he does or doesn’t recall." He noted that the family plans to address those details later, stating, "We will get into that more once he’s in that setting, where we’re focusing on his mental health."
It was Tom's wife, Barbara, who located her brother at his home after a concerning TikTok livestream. She described the event as "one of the darkest days my family and I have ever experienced."
Barbara found Hilton in his room with the door locked, which she noted was unusual for him. After unlocking the door, she found him "naked, cut up, covered in blood." Reflecting on the scene, she said, "What I can say with certainty is that I didn't recognize my brother when I looked at him. I saw it in his eyes. They didn't look the same."
While Hilton continues his recovery, his three children (Mario, 13, Mia, 11, and Mayte, 8) are under the care of his mother, who received temporary custody. Hilton has been granted visitation rights, provided he secures psychiatric clearance and the visits are supervised by a therapist or an agreed-upon family member.
