Christina Applegate has revealed that her forthcoming appearance at the Screen Actors Guild Awards may be her final awards ceremony as a working actress.
The 52-year-old Dead to Me actress - who confirmed her MS diagnosis in 2021 - is nominated for outstanding performance by a female actor in a comedy series for her role as Jen Harding in the Netflix comedy.
This is her sixth-ever SAG nomination for the show, which is about a real estate agent who is seething with grief after the death of her husband and crosses paths with Judy Hale, a free-spirited woman who also suffered a tragic loss.
In a recent interview with The Los Angeles Times, Applegate opened up about the award show season and shared that the upcoming ceremony will most likely be her final one as she continues to deal with the impacts of the disease.
"It's my last awards show as an actor probably, so it's kind of a big deal," Applegate told the outlet. "Right now, I couldn't imagine getting up at 5 a.m. and spending 12 to 14 hours on a set; I don't have that in me at this moment."
Although acting is no longer on her radar, the Married With Children star said she has her next career move in mind, revealing: "Doing a s*** ton of voice-overs to make some cash to make sure that my daughter's fed and we're homed".
Her comments come almost two years after she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. At the time, she was filming the Netflix series's final season and was forced to take a break to undergo treatment.
The actress hailed the "incredible" crew, showrunner, and costars, for their support during those difficult months in her interview with the publication.
She said that they were "Jen and Judy combined into a human, in the most perfect and beautiful way possible" - a reference to the close friendship between her character and Linda Cardellini's Judy Hale.
Applegate confessed that she was a "wreck" during filming of the final season, adding: "But most of that wreck would take place in my trailer by myself. But there were times I'd break down on set and be like, 'I can't, we have to take a break, I need a half-hour,' and everyone was so loving that it was OK."
The Vacation star previously battled breast cancer in 2008, which led to her undergoing a double mastectomy. She also had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed in 2017.
She disclosed to the publication how challenging it was to watch the season once it aired on the streaming service because she doesn't like "seeing myself struggling".
"Also, I gained 40 pounds because of inactivity and medications, and I didn't look like myself, and I didn't feel like myself," she continued, expressing that she watched the show alone and stopped occasionally when it became too difficult.
"At some point, I was able to distance myself from my own ego and realize what a beautiful piece of television it was. All the scenes I wasn't in were so much fun to see and experience for the very first time," the actress added.
The 29th Screen Actors Guild Awards will be held on Sunday, February 26.
