Christina Applegate has called out a cruel troll who mocked her appearance at Sunday night's Critics' Choice Awards.
On January 15, the 51-year-old actress attended the prestigious night with her 11-year-old daughter Sadie dressed in an all-black tailored ensemble.
Applegate was nominated for best actress in a comedy series alongside other big names such as Quinta Brunson, Kaley Cuoco, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Devery Jacobs, and Jean Smart.
Though Smart ended up clinching the victory for her performance in HBO Max's Hacks, Applegate's appearance at the ceremony was a stand-out moment for Dead To Me fans as it marked her first awards ceremony since her multiple sclerosis diagnosis back in August 2021.
The actress opened up about her MS diagnosis during an intimate interview with The New York Times, stating that it affected a lot of aspects of her life.
"Although it’s not like I came on the other side of it, like, ‘Woohoo, I’m totally fine.' Acceptance? No. I’m never going to accept this. I’m p***ed," she said.
Despite her illness, Applegate explained that she was determined to continue living her life to the fullest and that started with finishing filming the third and final season of Dead To Me, which had to be paused after she initially started getting treatment.
"I had an obligation to Liz and to Linda, to our story," she told the outlet, despite show bosses apparently wanting to cease filming.
"If people hate it, if people love it, if all they can concentrate on is, ‘Ooh, look at the cripple,’ that’s not up to me," she said. "But hopefully people can get past it and just enjoy the ride and say goodbye to these two girls."
And it clearly proved to be a hit amongst fans and critics alike, earning her a well-deserved nomination at this year's Critics' Choice Awards.
While Applegate should have been celebrating the occasion, it seems as though the 51-year-old had to spend her time battling trolls who were leaving hateful comments about her appearance.
Taking to Twitter on Tuesday, the actress posted a screenshot of a private message sent to her by a hater who wrote: "MS didn’t make you look that way, a plastic surgeon did. And you are a scammer and not [Christina] Applegate. And a bad plastic surgeon at that."
In a tweet response, the star recalled the full incident so that people could see what she is forced to deal with.
"Sooooo I made the unfortunate decision to look at some comments on an article from people mag about me and my kids at the CCA," she wrote. "Of course I told her that it wasn’t nice. This was her reply. What is wrong with people."
She also concluded the post by saying that the hater's response actually made her laugh.
Thankfully, Applgate's fans had her back in the comments section with many leaving kind words of support.
"My darling. You are beautiful inside and out. I love you from the bottom to the top of my heart, but you know that. Sadly, because of social media we get to see hateful messages from damaged individuals. Hurt people, hurt people. You are loved the world over, never forget that," wrote one user.
Another user also shared a different perspective to help mentally combat the hate: "Only very unhappy angry people hurt others always remember when you are happy you want everyone around you to feel the same, when you are miserable you want to bring misery to others. That always makes me feel good."
A third gave the actress some simple advice: "Never read the comments."
Though Applegate's talent has earned her many accolades throughout her career, it's her strength and resilience that cements her as an icon in the industry.
