Margot Robbie opened up about 'incredibly disturbing' sexual harassment scene from one of her lesser-known films
Margot Robbie is one of the most popular and successful actresses working today, known for her eye-catching roles in the likes of Barbie, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood and The Wolf of Wall Street.
Now having her pick of projects as an actor and producer in her own right, Robbie is at the top of the pyramid right now, but it wasn't always that way.
On her hustle up to the A-List, Robbie revealed that filming one of her lesser-known films included having to film a sexual harassment scene that ended up being "incredibly disturbing."
It came about while Robbie was filming 2019's Bombshell, a bracing drama about a real-life scandal that hit all the harder in the years after the Me Too Movement.
The scene in Bombshell that Margot Robbie called "incredibly disturbing"
Bombshell recounts the real-life events at US TV channel Fox News, where a group of female employees set out to expose the channel's CEO, Roger Ailes, for sexual harassment.
Charlize Theron leads the film portraying Fox newscaster Megyn Kelly, with Nicole Kidman also playing a real-life broadcaster, Gretchen Carlson, who accused Ailes of abuse.
Robbie stars as Kayla Pospisil, who is a composite character of various Fox News staffers who experienced abuse at the hands of Ailes.
Recounting the moment when she had to film a scene in which her character is forced by Ailes (played by John Lithgow) to lift up her skirt for him.
"John [Lithgow] and I were equally disturbed by that scene," she recalled during Lionsgate’s The Contenders Los Angeles panel. "It was obviously an incredibly safe place on a set. I’m very grateful that I got to do that scene with John."
Robbie went on to say that, "Jay [Roach, the film's director] was in the room every step of the way. Our crew [was] incredible, but the content of that scene was very disturbing."
How Robbie's work in Bombshell scored her an Oscar nomination
Despite the challenges in filming such hair-raising material, though, Robbie was singled out by critics as a highlight of Bombshell when it was released in 2019.
It was the biggest indicator yet that she was on her way to the top of Hollywood - backed up by the fact that she scored her second Oscar nomination for the film for Best Supporting Actress.
It was the second acting nomination Robbie had received in two years, following her 2018 nomination for Best Actress for her work on the biopic I, Tonya as Tonya Harding.
Sadly, though, she lost the Best Supporting Actress to Laura Dern in Marriage Story.
Her third, and most recent, nomination came for her work as producer on the 2023 blockbuster Barbie when it was nominated for Best Picture.
