Actor Mila Kunis was left visibly uncomfortable during an interview with Alan Carr after he asked an awkward question about relationships and sex while she was promoting her 2011 rom-com Friends with Benefits alongside Justin Timberlake.
Kunis has previously spoken openly about how she felt objectified in Hollywood. In a public letter released in 2016, the actress revealed that a producer once warned her career would “nose-dive” if she refused to pose nude for promotional material.
Despite that pressure, Kunis has gone on to build a hugely successful career in the industry, in both television and film.
Back in 2011, Kunis and Timberlake appeared on Alan Carr: Chatty Man to promote Friends with Benefits, which featured several intimate scenes between the pair.
Kunis had already made it clear that she wasn’t comfortable doing full nude scenes, even using a body double for certain shots in the movie.
Speaking at the time on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show, she joked: “I showed side-boob, and I figured I can’t just give away everything all at once. I gotta let it all out in little pieces here and there.”
During the interview, Carr brought up the film’s storyline and said: “In the film, it's interesting because women can't handle the sex bit, can they? Because they get emotionally involved.”
Timberlake immediately sensed the tension and nervously reacted with an “uh oh,” while warning the host: “You don't know what you just did to this one.”
As Carr noticed Kunis’ unimpressed expression, he asked: “What have I said? Have I pushed the wrong buttons?”
Kunis quickly corrected the assumption, explaining: “Well, I just want to point out in this film, both characters get emotionally attached, but the man sticks his foot in his mouth and says the wrong thing, and the woman is just more vocal about it.”
She added: “That's what I think, I think both characters do, not just the female.”
Timberlake then tried to lighten the mood by joking: “I think the woman goes particularly insane, and the male just has to put up with it,” prompting laughter from the audience and easing the awkward moment.
The conversation later shifted to whether the movie’s premise, two friends having casual sex without emotional consequences, could actually work in real life. Both stars agreed it probably wasn’t something viewers should attempt themselves.
