Jake Gyllenhaal has revealed that he's finding regular bathing to be "less necessary" these days.

The actor has weighed in on the hot topic, after Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher revealed that they don't wash their kids every day.

Last week, Kunis, 37, and Kutcher, 43, admitted that they wait until they see dirt on their two children - daughter Wyatt Isabelle, six, and son Dimitri Portwood, four - before giving them a wash.

What's more, Kristen Bell, 41, and Dax Shepard, 46, gave their two cents, revealing that they "wait for the stink" before bathing their own children.

Naturally, people had plenty to say about their children's bathtime habits, and it sparked a real debate online.

Now Gyllenhaal has given his take on bathing, and it's safe to say that the Nightcrawler star does not hop in the shower every day.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Gyllenhaal discussed the topic of cleanliness, saying: "I always am baffled that loofahs come from nature. They feel like they’ve been made in a factory but, in fact, it's just not true. Since I was young, it's amazed me.

"More and more I find bathing to be less necessary, at times."

Gyllenhaal then referenced the lyrics of the song 'New Lace Sleeves' by Elvis Costello and the Attractions.

"I do believe, because Elvis Costello is wonderful, that good manners and bad breath get you nowhere. So I do that," he said.

"But I do also think that there’s a whole world of not bathing that is also really helpful for skin maintenance, and we naturally clean ourselves."

The conversation of bathing has been a hot topic for the past week after some celebs revealed just how little bathing goes on in their household.

During an appearance on The View, Bell and Shepard revealed that they use to bathe their daughters Lincoln, eight, and Delta, six, every night - until the routine fell out of whack.

Shepard said: "What's interesting is, we bathed our children every single night prior to bed as part of a routine, and then, somehow, they started to go to sleep on their own without the routine.

"[Kristen and I] had to start saying, like, 'Hey, when's the last time you bathed them?'"

"Yeah, we forget," Bell added.

Shepard then shared that "sometimes five, six days" pass without their daughters getting a wash - adding that they don't actually smell.

"Well, they do sometimes," the Bad Moms star chimed in. "Once you catch a whiff, that's biology's way of letting you know you need to clean it up."

"I'm a big fan of waiting for the stink," she continued. "Once you catch a whiff, that's biology's way of letting you know you need to clean it up. I don't hate what they're doing. I wait for the stink!"

Bell then went on to say: "There's a red flag because honestly, it's just bacteria. And once you get the bacteria, you gotta be like, 'Get in the tub or the shower.' So I don't hate what they're doing. I wait for the stink."
