Jane Fonda has announced that she is taking a lengthy break from acting due to the 2024 presidential election.

The 85-year-old Hollywood icon was among those in attendance at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City on Saturday (June 10).

During the annual festival, the two-time academy award winner received the Harry Belafonte Voices for Social Justice Award by singer Alicia Keys.

Fonda has been known for decades-long political activism, supporting various causes including women's rights, and climate action, and even campaigning against the Vietnam War.

After accepting the accolade, the Grace and Frankie star took part in an on-stage interview with Robin Roberts where she revealed that she would be taking a break from acting ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

According to Deadline, the 62-year-old broadcaster asked Fonda what she would be doing for the next 18 months, so the actress disclosed that she would attempt to get people focused on addressing climate change.

"We are animals, let us not forget. We depend on the ocean and the forests for oxygen, for food. I mean, even dogs don’t shit in their own kennel. And we’re in our kennel and taking a lot down with us in the process. We have to stop it. It’s all connected," she said.

The Barbarella actress said it is up to people "alive right now" to make a change because it will be too late once they are gone. She added that society now "can make the difference".

In addition to this, Fonda - who launched Jane Fonda Climate PAC last year - declared that during her acting hiatus, she will try to get climate champions elected to office, stating: "Let’s get rid of the Joe Manchin’s."

"We need to try to light a fire under Biden and look, we have to vote for him, ok? We have got to get really mad at him and we have to try to demand that he earn our votes. But I mean, let’s be real because the alternative is the end of everything," she added.

The 9 to 5 star also personally ruled herself out of a presidential run-in, explaining that an aspect of getting older is realizing what your "strong suit" is, noting that being president is not a role she desires.

This story follows on from last month's Awards ceremony at the Cannes Film Festival when the Book Club actress hilariously threw the Palme d'Or at the winning director.

Fonda presented the award to French filmmaker Justine Triet for her film Anatomy Of A Fall - a dramatic thriller that tells the story of a woman battling accusations that she murdered her husband.

After the 44-year-old proudly accepted the accolade and stepped down from the podium, she accidentally left her scroll lying on the lectern.

The Monster in Law actress tried to grab her attention but became exasperated when she didn't meet the recipient’s eye. Therefore, she decided to launch the certificate at the creative instead.

However, the director didn't seem to react to Fonda which prompted a sigh of disbelief from the award-winning star who threw her arms in the air in defeat.

We hope that we can still catch Fonda at award shows during her acting hiatus.
