It all went down on Tuesday (April 15) during French player Lois Boisson's match against Harriet Dart at the Open de Rouen.

In the middle of the game, the British No. 4 stopped play to lodge a bizarre complaint with the chair umpire.

"Can you tell her to wear deodorant? She's smelling really bad," Dart said, loud enough for a courtside microphone to pick up.

Viewers were quick to criticize the 28-year-old for her "nasty" remarks and called for consequences.

"The Harriet Dart commentary toward her opponent today wreaks of high school mean girl bullying. Nasty behavior," one user wrote.

Another said: "Harriett Dart asking the umpire to ask her opponent to wear deodorant bc she smells is NASTY WORK," and a third added: "This brat should be suspended for a couple of years!"

Dart ended up losing the match, and the fallout was fast. Taking to Instagram, she posted a public apology aimed directly at Boisson.

"Hey everyone, I want to apologise for what I said on court today, it was a heat-of-the-moment comment that I truly regret," she wrote.

"That's not how I want to carry myself, and I take fully responsibility. I have a lot of respect for Lois and how she competed today," she said, adding that she would “learn” from the moment and “move forward".

However, Boisson wasn’t about to let the moment pass without a little flair of her own.

The 21-year-old, who is ranked No. 303 in the world and entered the event as a wildcard, hit back with style.

Posting a photo of herself from the match, Boisson edited in a Dove deodorant can and captioned the pic: "@dove apparently need a collab," tagging the brand and adding a prayer emoji and two laughing faces.

Social media erupted after fans saw Boisson’s hilarious comeback to Dart’s mid-match insult.

“That’s a smart n’ classy way to move! Bravo,” one person penned. A second said: "If that was in fact her response, that is classy...unlike Dart's comments."

“Perfect lol roasted that arrogant woman,” added another. "Great response by Lois Boisson. You might think someone is a bit wiffy, but that comment was way out of order," a fourth wrote.

The French athlete didn’t just win online - she crushed Dart on the court too, sealing the match with a dominant 6-0, 6-3 victory.
