The Golden Globes started the awards season in style last night but many are questioning why it didn't have a segment remembering those who had died during the year.

Celebrities donned their finest attire as they hit the red carpet on Tuesday (January 10) with many hopeful of taking home a prestigious award.

Some of the stars present included Anya Taylor-Joy for her turn in The Menu and Jennifer Coolidge who ended up winning the best performance by an actress in a supporting role in a limited series for her role in White Lotus... and her acceptance speech stole the entire show!

Amongst the inevitable chaos and comedy of an awards ceremony, it is usually a tradition for the pace to be slowed down for a few minutes in order to pay respects to those within the industry who have passed away in the previous year.

However, the Golden Globes opted not to do one last night following the decision to stop the segment altogether in 2017, and there is a reason why.

Speaking to People in 2017, Golden Globes producer Barry Adelman explained: "Those things [in memoriam segments] are handled really well by the Oscars and the Screen Actors Guild."

Instead of a formal segment during the ceremony, the Golden Globes offers a memorial page on their website for viewers to see who has passed during the year.

Ricky Gervais, who hosted the awards in 2020, poked fun at the lack of an in-memoriam segment (as well as ongoing diversity issues at awards shows in general), saying: "We were going to do an in-memoriam this year, but when I saw the list of people who died, it wasn’t diverse enough. It was mostly white people and I thought, ‘Nah, not on my watch.’ Maybe next year. We’ll see what happens," he joked.

Celebrities that have passed away this year include designer Vivienne Westwood who died in late December, iconic actress Angela Lansbury who passed in October, and Grease actress Olivia Newton-John who died in August following a battle with cancer.

We're sure the Oscars will hold a touching in memoriam section for all those that we have lost over the year.
