Jason Momoa stood up for himself in a recent interview after a question about his controversial sexual assault scene in Game of Thrones left a "bad feeling" in his stomach.
In an interview that was published on Friday, July 30, the Aquaman star, 42, spoke to New York Times about a wide range of topics - including his role as Khal Drogo in the hugely popular fantasy series.
However, Momoa took umbrage with the phrasing of a particular question that implied he may have regrets about having played a character who sexually assaults Daenerys Targaryen on their wedding night.
David Marchese, a journalist at the publication, prefaced his question by explaining that the HBO show "inspired a lot of discussion about its depiction of scenes of sexual assault and its treatment of women generally."
He then proceeded to ask Momoa: "Do you think differently today about those scenes? Would you do one now? Do you have any regrets? Those types of scenes can seem as if they belong to an older cultural moment."
The actor responded: "Well, it was important to depict Drogo and his style. You’re playing someone that’s like Genghis Khan.
"It was a really, really, really hard thing to do. But my job was to play something like that, and it’s not a nice thing, and it’s what that character was.
"It’s not my job to go, 'Would I not do it?' I’ve never really been questioned about 'Do you regret playing a role?' We’ll put it this way: I already did it. Not doing it again."
Marchese then moved on to talk about Momoa's science fiction series See and other projects he has been involved in since Game of Thrones.
However, as soon as the reporter wrapped up the interview, Momoa decided to call him out over the question about his contentious scene in Game of Thrones.
He said: "I wanted to bring something up that left a bad feeling in my stomach. When you brought up Game of Thrones, you brought up stuff about what’s happening with my character and would I do it again. I was bummed when you asked me that."
The actor went on to describe the question as "icky", explaining that actors have no creative control over the depiction of certain scenes.
He added: "There are producers, there are writers, there are directors, and you don’t get to come in and be like, 'I’m not going do that because this isn’t kosher right now and not right in the political climate. That never happens. So it’s a question that feels icky. I just wanted you to know that."

Emilia Clarke has revealed that Jason Momoa got her "as drunk as humanly possible" during their recent reunion.
The Game of Thrones star, 34, recently caught up with Momoa, her on-screen partner, for co-creator David Benioff's birthday celebration, and she told PEOPLE that the actor, 42, knows how to party.
"Oh God, it was beautiful," she said. "When Jay's in town, you know it's going down."
"He walks into the room and you're just like, 'My man,'" Clarke continued. "It's almost like a test, every time he sees [me] he's like, 'Can I still throw you around the room? Yeah I can.'"
She then explained that he proceeded to get the group "as drunk as humanly possible."
Clarke said that she tried more whiskeys than she'd ever had before in her life at the event and explained that while some were tasty, there were others that tasted like "paint stripper".
However, she joked to herself that they would put hairs on her chest.
In case your memory needs refreshing, Momoa played Khal Drogo on the first season of Game of Thrones, but while his character only featured for one season, Clarke's Daenerys Targaryen featured in all eight seasons from 2011 to 2019.
The two actors went on to share pictures from the birthday bash on their respective social media last month.
"When your sun and stars rolls into town you check that he can still bench press a Khaleesi," Clarke captioned the post.
Sharing pics with his own followers, Momoa wrote: "MOON OF MY LIFE. you are wonderful love u forever @emilia_clarke #smilelyeyes", before going on to share his birthday wishes with Benioff.
In a recent interview about his role as Drogo with the New York Times, Momoa called out an interviewer over a certain "icky" question.

There are few experiences in life more exciting than meeting your favourite celebrity. Imagine how triumphant you must feel when you finally have the chance to banter with your idol, the person who you most look up to and respect. It's what events like Comic-Con were invented for; to give star-struck nerds the opportunity to meet and greet the people they worship.
Most of the time, the lines for pictures and autographs at these events are pretty damn long, and you might be stood waiting for hours before you get a chance to snap a quick selfie and stammer your appreciation of their work. But occasionally, the stars go that extra mile for their fans - and the result always turns out to be legendary.
Recently, actor Jason Momoa (famous for playing the part of ripped barbarian stud Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones, and ripped Atlantean stud Aquaman in Justice League) attended Comic-Con in Denver, Colorado. There he indulged fans with a photo-op, and when one woman asked for a photo alone with him, hilarity, and trolling, soon ensued.
You see, Jason Momoa is best-known for being a major hunk - I mean, there's a reason he's shirtless in most of his movies. So when this lady asked him for a picture together, her husband, who was feeling a bit outclassed, wasn't totally into the idea of his wife ending up in another man's (gigantic) arms.
Thus, he insisted that he photobomb Momoa and his wife. "I told my husband I wanted a picture alone with Jason Momoa, but he wasn’t comfortable with that," she stated. She then shared the signed picture on Reddit, which shows her standing with Momoa, who is holding her spouse at arm's length.
Apparently, Momoa was a big fan of how the snap turned out. According to Reddit-user 'Twoforjoy" (the lucky lady who uploaded the image) "He was all about it. When he saw the print-out to sign it, he said, 'This is f*cking amazing." There was no word on her husband's opinion on the matter, but I think I can guess that it wasn't positive.
Other Redditors who have also met Momoa also shared anecdotes about what a kind dude he is. A user with the handle '976chip' wrote: "I met him at DragonCon in 2010 before GoT debuted. There was no one at his booth. When I was walking up to him he greeted me like I was a friend he hadn’t seen in years and wasn’t expecting to show up. I talked to him for about five minutes. He was exceptionally friendly and laid back," while another added: "I work in Belfast so I've served a few of the Game of Thrones cast/crew etc a few times. Served Jason twice ... That man can drink beer like it's water though it's impressive as sh*t."
To be honest, I'm not I'd trust my girlfriend around him either. That guy is hot as hell.
