A lawyer has revealed why people should never choose to smile in their mugshot photos if they ever find they are being arrested.
Having your mugshot taken is not something people usually relish, but some criminals - and celebrities, including Morgan Wallen during his arrest in April 2024 - have gone viral in recent years for grinning while their photo is taken in the police station.
And while it may seem like a great way to get an iconic snap to tell your friends and grandchildren about, smiling in your mugshot photo can be a seriously bad idea.
Narimon Pishnamaz, who is a partner at the injury law firm Law & Pish, from California, has explained exactly why.
He took to YouTube under the name @AttorneyPish to explain why it's always better to remain straight-faced when having a mugshot photo done, after a woman who smiled in hers soon lived to regret it.
Pishnamaz used the example of Angenette Marie Missett, whose smiling mugshot went viral before she was sentenced to 11 years in prison for killing a mother of three in a car crash.
He explained that grinning away after such a horrible incident isn't going to curry any favor with the jury that is deciding your fate.
"The jury is absolutely going to hate you if they see that you smiled in your mugshot after you just killed someone," he explained.
Sharing a photo of Missett, he added: "So imagine you get arrested like this woman did for a DUI that ended up killing someone.
"And imagine if they put this mugshot up during trial and ask the jury if this looks like a woman who is remorseful for the crime she committed."
He warned that not looking sorry enough about your crime could result in a longer sentence, revealing: "As a result this woman ended up getting 11 years in prison."
Missett's case made the headlines in 2018 after she was charged with driving under the influence in a crash that caused 60-year-old Sandra Clarkson critical injuries which later resulted in her death, and also injured Clarkson's 18-year-old daughter Shiyanna Kroll.
Police said Missett's blood alcohol content was .172, more than twice the legal limit, when she slammed into the back of the vehicle Clarkson and Kroll were in, causing it to crash into the trailer truck in front of it in Marion County, Florida.
Her smiling mugshot caused so much outrage after it went viral that a new one had to be taken.
She had faced a minimum of four years in prison and a maximum of 15 after pleading no contest to manslaughter, but ended up with 11, on the higher end of the scale.
Missett told the court before sentencing: "I am truly, truly sorry and if I could change spots with your mother I would in a heartbeat. I am sorry. I am sorry. I am truly, truly sorry."
She is not the only person who has opted to smile in their mugshot, as Justin Bieber famously grinned after he was arrested for drunk driving and resisting arrest in 2014 in Miami, before he was released the same day on $2,500 bail.
Lindsay Lohan also smirked in her mugshot after she was arrested in 2006 for a DUI, and again in 2007 for violating her probation by knowingly driving without a valid license.
So if you ever find yourself on the wrong side of the law, make sure to make your most remorseful face when they come to take your photo.

They say that there's a bright side to any situation, and it turns out that's apparently true even if you get arrested. A 19-year-old who was apprehended for possession of marijuana (a cheeky two grams she was planning on smoking with friends later that night) might've landed herself a night in jail, but it looks like she's also landed herself a promising career path.
Former Texan university student Marshala Perkins took her time to apply her makeup before heading out to meet her friends. But while she was sitting in the car, the 19-year-old was approached by two Hunt County police officers.

"[One officer] asked me for my handicap sticker because I was in a handicap spot," Marshala told As/Is, explaining that her mother has a disability and she often drives her around. "I gave it to him and he brought it back, said everything was clear."
But unfortunately, one of the officers had his nostrils on high alert. "It smells like weed in here," he reportedly said, before asking her to step out of the car so he could search it. Lo-and-behold, they found the little bag of devil's lettuce.
"And so I went to jail for it with my beat face," Marshala stated, referring to (wait for it)... this:

Yup, Marshala's mugshot ended up on the internet on the rather questionable "Mugshot Baes" Twitter account. As you can see, she looks bangin', and people were very impressed to learn that her makeup skills are completely self-taught.
The picture soon went viral, and people began requesting tutorials from the 19-year-old.

She was arrested back in February but the photo appeared on the Twitter page more recently, earning her a lot of attention.
“My phone started going crazy,” the Dallas local told the Star-Telegraph. “I was still kind of embarrassed about it because it was something I didn’t want people to know. But then when I started reading the comments I was like, besides me being in jail, people are really noticing my talent and what I can do.”
It seems the embarrassment turned into inspiration, with Marshala saying "makeup is something that I really wanted to do—I was like 'Okay!' I wasn’t feeling too bad about it."
Her Instagram follower count rose enormously once people found her public profile, and she's had countless requests for video tutorials. And it doesn't end there! Marshala said that she's also been contacted about starting her own makeup line.

“Someone has reached out to me about starting my own makeup line. It’s crazy. My mind is blown,” she revealed. “Now it’s turned into something so positive so I’m just going to embrace it and see where it takes me.”
Marshala has made a YouTube channel with makeup-brushes featured in her profile's imagery, so it seems she is planning to upload a few tutorials. Despite the fact that she has no videos yet, she has close to 1,000 subscribers already.
We're looking forward to see what's still to come!

Why does it seem that we're always attracted to the bad boy or the bad girl? There's just something about the fantasy of a criminal that stirs a bit of passion, isn't there? Perhaps it's the Bonnie and Clyde complex, but nothing seems to get the internet more hot and bothered than a particularly attractive mugshot.
I'm sure we all remember the incredibly hot felon, Jeremy Meeks. He was a member of the Crips and was arrested in 2014. After the police posted his mugshot online, it went viral and spawned the nickname "hot felon" as well as the hashtag #MugshotBae.
While Meeks served 27 months in prison for felony charges of possessing an illegal firearm and grand theft, due to his internet celebrity status, he became a model after he was released from jail last year. He was recently described by Vogue as a "buff bad boy" after a New York Fashion Week performance.
However, now there's a new #MugshotBae on the block. Marshala Perkin was recently arrested for marijuana possession, but after the internet caught sight of the self-taught makeup artist's mugshot, many were demanding her release so that they could get a beauty tutorial!
Her mugshot has gotten hundreds of thousands of likes on Twitter with many comments pouring in to tell her how gorgeous she looks and others asking the felon to share her makeup secrets.
Perkin explained to Buzzfeed exactly what happened the day she got arrested. Apparently, she had parked her car in a handicap parking space because her mother had a badge and Perkin often drives her around town to run errands.
A police officer approached her car and asked for the badge. Perkin supplied it and the officer walked away only to return a few moments later to say everything checked out. That's when the officer suddenly asked Perkin to step out of the car on account of him smelling marijuana.
Check out the video below to see 10 of the hottest mugshots ever taken:

The officer found two grams of weed, which Perkin confessed she planned to smoke later that day with some friends, and at that point, she was arrested. The mugshot of discussion shortly followed along with Perkin's instant internet fame.
Perkin admitted that she was embarrassed about the whole incident at first, but then later claimed she was pleased that everyone loved her makeup skills so much. She's definitely got talent!
The 19-year-old has now seen her career as a makeup artist take off and she has been constantly being asked to do others' makeup. Numerous requests for tips and tutorials have also been made.
"Someone has reached out to me about starting my own makeup line. It's crazy. My mind is blown," Perkins, who is studying at A&M Univerisity, said. "Now it's turned into something so positive so I'm just going to embrace it and see where it takes me."
I'm sure plenty of us are looking forward to a potential makeup line. And, as requested, Perkins has begun recording tutorial videos to be posted online. Her legions of fans will certainly be happy about this news!
Perkin isn't the only felon with a fanbase. Thanks to the Twitter account Mugshot Baes, plenty of criminal pretty faces have gone viral, and if Perkin and Meeks are proof of anything it's that, on occasion, getting arrested can be very good for one's career. Who would have thought that eh?!
Most of the Mugshot Bae photos get hundreds if not thousands of likes. However, if you don't want the world to know what you did, then perhaps don't do the crime. These photos also list what the person was arrested for and are shared widely.
For example, one mugshot bae is listed as having seduced a minor. Yikes! Not sure that's going to go over well for future career prospects. Marijuana possession is one thing, but not all criminal activity can be so easily overlooked.
What do you think? Would you date a prisoner? While hearing of people having an incarcerated penpal is nothing new, websites like MeetaPrisoner.com, InmatesforYou.com, and GayPrisoners.net have made interaction with an inmate easier than ever.
So what exactly is it that attracts some people to those who have committed crimes? One woman named Georgina Rigby admitted to having previously had a relationship with a prison inmate.
"Thinking about it now, several years later, the letters allowed me to be intimate at a distance. To be my 'best self' without the physical and personal flaws that he'd encounter face to face," she admitted to the Independent. She also added that she just wanted to be "wanted and liked".
Perhaps for others, the attraction is superficial - with beauty being the main factor attracting them to their mugshot baes. And online flirting is nothing more than a little fun at a distance, perhaps similar to that of a crush on a celebrity. After all, these viral mugshots are allowing these people to become celebrities of sorts.
So do these mugshot baes find true love post-internet-fame? Perhaps. Jeremy Meeks, the original "hot felon", divorced his wife of a decade earlier this year. Now he's dating the ultrarich Topshop heiress Chloe Green. Is it true love? Only time will tell.
For now, let's all try to find more legal ways to become rich and famous. In the meantime, we wish Marshala Perkin the very best of luck with her career as a makeup artist. We look forward to those tutorials and a hot new beauty line soon!

While little good can come out of being arrested, the rise of so-called #MugshotBae has propelled several individuals into the spotlight. Of course, there's the "hot felon", Jeremy Meeks, who landed an international modelling contract after his mugshot started making the rounds on social media, but now a college student has gone viral after people started pointing out just how glamorous her mugshot was.
In February of this year, Marshala Perkins did her makeup ready to go out with her friends. However, before she was able to set off, the college student was approached by two Hunt County police officers at her car. "[One officer] asked me for my handicap sticker because I was in a handicap spot," Marshala told As/Is, clarifying that her mother, whom she often drives around, has a disability. "I gave it to him and he brought it back, said everything was clear."
But instead of leaving matters there, the police officer allegedly said "It smells like weed in here", and told her to exit the vehicle so that she could be searched. The officers found two grams of marijuana, which the self-taught makeup artist had planned to smoke with her friends. "And so I went to jail for it with my beat face," Marshala stated, referring to her gorgeous makeup look.
And I mean, just take a look at her mugshot...

Five months later, Marshala's mugshot went viral after a Twitter user reposted the image with the caption, "We need a tutorial! Free her!"

"At first I was embarrassed because that’s not really something that you want to be broadcasted," the 19-year-old said in response to all the press attention. "But then when I saw all the support for me with my face beat—because makeup is something that I really wanted to do—I was like 'Okay!' I wasn’t feeling too bad about it.”
Marshala has never previously been arrested prior to the night of February 6th when she was charged with possession of marijuana, held overnight in jail, and ordered to pay $2,000 in court fees during the course of her six-month probation period.
The college freshman has since drawn attention to the fact that many of her fellow black students have had similar experiences. "I mean it was getting to the point where nobody that I was meeting was able to tell me, ‘Oh no, I was never arrested down here for marijuana’ or ‘I’ve never been stopped or searched or anything,'" she told the publication.

According to FBI data published by The Intercept, Texas police officers made more annual marijuana arrests in 2016 than law enforcement officials in any other state. In conjunction to this, a 2013 ACLU study found that while the use of marijuana is largely equal between black and white people, black people are 3.73 times more likely to arrested for possession of the drug nationwide.
"It’s been really hard trying to get a job because of my background now. A lot of people don’t want to hire people with marijuana on their background," Marshala concluded.
