Ioannis Vasilopoulos, a man who played a part in the success of Bon Jovi and Deep Purple, has sadly passed away.
Known simply as “Ioannis” in the rock world, the visionary artist passed away on April 7.
His family confirmed the heartbreaking news in an emotional online obituary that paid tribute to the man whose art helped define an era of music.
“We announce with heavy hearts the passing of Ioannis, our beloved artist, husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend, who has left us for the great beyond,” the family’s statement read.
“We find comfort knowing that Ioannis is reunited with his father, mother and other beloved family and friends. The outpouring of love for Ioannis and his work is also a great comfort.”
The statement also revealed that Ioannis had no plans of slowing down: “There were so many things Ioannis wanted to do and so many new projects he could not wait to share. As a family we have been tasked to continue this work and that is what we are going to do.
"His energy will live on through his incredible art. His bright smile and child-like excitement lives on in his works. Ioannis will undoubtedly be remembered as one of rock's all-time great artists."
Ioannis was a legendary album cover designer behind some of rock’s most iconic visuals, including album covers.
Ioannis leaves behind a legacy that stretches across decades and genres. He is survived by his wife Lisa, daughter Maria, son-in-law Conor, grandchildren Henry and Jack, brother George, and many other close family members.
A private funeral was held on Friday, April 11, at a Greek Orthodox Church, where loved ones gathered to celebrate the life of a man whose art touched millions.
Born in Athens, Greece, Ioannis emigrated to the United States with his family in 1967. It was there, as a child, that he developed a passion for both animation and music—two creative currents that would define his entire career.

While still in college, he designed his first album cover and later went on to direct his first MTV music video for Art In America.
But it was his incredible knack for capturing the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll that would make him a go-to artist for some of the biggest names in the business.
Throughout his career, Ioannis created more than 350 record covers for major bands including Bon Jovi, Deep Purple, Skid Row, Blue Öyster Cult, and Starship. His artwork wasn’t just eye-catching—it became part of the identity of the music itself.
He also collaborated with major music giants like Sony Music, Universal Music, Starz, and Virgin Records, along with classic rock radio stations across the country.
His work was even featured in the Led Zeppelin-focused book Get the Led Out, written by Denny Somach and Martin Popoff, per the Daily Mail.
Right up until his passing, Ioannis continued to sell his artwork worldwide and exhibit at shows across the United States.
Following news of his passing, tributes have flooded in from both fans and industry insiders. One of the most heartfelt came from Goldmine Magazine editor Patrick Prince, who shared:
“Ioannis was a wonderfully generous person and a dear friend. His talent as an artist was limitless. He had more passion than any artist I've met and significantly cherished his work with rock and roll bands.
"It didn't matter if his artwork was commissioned for The Allman Brothers Band or a local band down the street, he gave 100 percent dedication to the project representing that specific artist.”
