Rob Reiner's daughter breaks silence after death of her father and mother in apparent murder
Rob Reiner’s eldest daughter has spoken out after the Hollywood filmmaker and his wife were found dead in their Los Angeles home.
The bodies of Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife Michele Singer Reiner, 68, were discovered inside their Brentwood residence on Sunday, December 14. Police and firefighters responded to a call for medical aid at around 3.38PM local time.
Authorities later confirmed both had died from stab wounds and the incident is being treated as an apparent homicide.
Rob Reiner’s son Nick has been arrested and booked into the Los Angeles County jail on suspicion of the murder of his parents. He was taken into custody at 9:15PM. Sunday and booked at 5:04AM, per the LA Times.
Tracy Reiner in shock over parents’ deaths
Tracy Reiner, Rob Reiner’s eldest daughter, has spoken publicly about her reaction to the news. Tracy was adopted by Reiner during his marriage to actress and director Penny Marshall and is also the daughter of Marshall’s previous husband Michael Henry.
Tracy, who is married with five children and has acted in films including A League of Their Own, Die Hard, and Apollo 13, appeared on NBC News with correspondent Chloe Melas.
She said: "I came from the greatest family ever. I don’t know what to say. I’m in shock."
How they met and tributes from friends
Rob and Michele met on the set of When Harry Met Sally, the iconic rom-com that led to them working together creatively and ultimately marrying in 1989. They went on to have three children together: sons Jake and Nick and daughter Romy, and worked jointly on films including Shock and Awe and Spinal Tap II The End Continues, which was released earlier in 2025.
Tributes have poured in from across Hollywood and beyond. A family spokesperson said per ABC News: "It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time."
California Governor Gavin Newsom said he was “heartbroken” by the news and called Reiner a “big‑hearted genius behind so many of the classic stories we love.”
Spinal Tap and The Princess Bride star Christopher Guest and his wife Jamie Lee Curtis said they were “numb, sad and shocked” about “the violent, tragic deaths” of their friends and added “our ONLY focus and care right now is for their children and immediate families and we will offer all support possible to help them.”
They continued: “There will be plenty of time later to discuss the creative lives we shared and the great political and social impact they both had on the entertainment industry, early childhood development, the fight for gay marriage and their global care for a world in crisis. We have lost great friends. Please give us time to grieve.”
