Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on whether US had a gay president
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez gave a strange response when asked if the USA would see a female president or a gay president first.
She seemed to imply that the USA might already have had one of them before now.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been touted for the presidency herself
The New York Democratic representative has been touted as a potential future president herself, and has attracted the attention of Donald Trump along the way too.
She’s young, is politically very popular among her supporters, and can count on other political heavyweights like Bernie Sanders, Zohran Mamdani and more to support her, should she ever decide to run.
However, if AOC were to run for president, she’d have to overcome one hurdle that no woman has ever done before.
Sure, Hilary Clinton got close, and Kamala Harris ran an admirable effort against a difficult backdrop, but the USA - for whatever reasons - just hasn’t ever seemed to want a woman to be president.
It’s ridiculous, really, given that it’s 2026.
AOC answered a strange question with a strange answer
Now, footage has resurfaced that shows the 37-year-old AOC being asked a question about whether she thinks the USA will see a gay president or a female president first.
It’s not the answer that you’d expect, though.
Because she seemed to suggest that perhaps the USA has already had a gay president.
The resurfaced TMZ clip sees AOC answer a selection of bizarre questions, the last of which being: “What do you think we’re going to have first, a female president or a gay president?”
She responded - with a knowing look in her eye: “Well, we don’t know if we’ve already had a gay president,
“I think there are chances that maybe we have, but… I don’t know.”
Asked which she thinks we’ll see first, she added: “Honestly, I think anything can happen,
“I don’t really buy into the skepticism [around a woman being president],
“A man has lost almost every presidential election, as well, and so when it comes to women, I think it’s more about what we’re actually fighting for as opposed to the body that we’re in, and so I think it’s about not taking big money, fixing and championing finance reform, and trying to fight for people, raise wages and help people make a living, and I think that if we have someone who fights for the right things and speaks to the right people then maybe we can overcome the gender gap and be able to make history, but I think it’s really important that we’re able to talk in a way that speaks to people’s hearts.”
That’s all very admirable, but who is she talking about when she says we have already maybe had a gay president?
Obviously the comments have been flooded with people who say that Donald Trump is - among other less savory comments - ‘openly bisexual’.
There’s no evidence to support that, despite some of the current incumbent's more outlandish statements.
“James Buchanan was gay,” one comment read.
That’s a matter for historical debate, but it definitely has been said before.
We simply can’t know exactly what AOC meant when she made the comments, but the fact that they’ve come back around now means that the interest remains, at least.
