Chilling backstory behind gunman who opened fire at cars on busy Massachusetts highway
A police-involved shooting in Massachusetts on Monday has drawn further attention after a chilling detail emerged about the alleged suspect.
The man, who was eventually apprehended by police, began shooting along a busy road before being shot by law enforcement and an armed bystander.
Footage shared by FOX 25 Boston appeared to show the suspect, identified by Middlesex County District Attorney Marian T. Ryan as Tyler Brown, walking through traffic while firing a weapon as cars drove past.
The police release details of shooting incident
According to Massachusetts State Police, troopers responded at around 1:20PM to reports of a shooting involving law enforcement near Memorial Drive and River Street. Officials confirmed that emergency crews treated “at least one individual for a gunshot wound” at the scene.
The Cambridge Police Department later said officers were called to the area after reports of gunfire, assuring residents there was “no on-going danger to the public” while urging people to avoid the scene.
Ryan explained that the situation began after Boston police warned nearby agencies about a man reportedly behaving erratically and believed to be carrying a rifle.
By the time officers arrived, authorities said the situation had escalated into an active shooter incident. Ryan alleged Brown was “walking down the middle of Memorial Drive and firing in an erratic manner” as traffic stopped and people scrambled for safety.
“In the course of doing that, two males in vehicles separately were struck by gunfire,” Ryan said.
Officials stated that a Massachusetts State Police trooper and an armed civilian, described as a former Marine with a legal firearm permit, confronted the suspect. Both reportedly opened fire, striking Brown several times in his arms and legs.
Brown was treated at the scene before being transported to a Boston hospital, where he remains in custody. The two men injured in their vehicles were also hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
Ryan revealed that “a very high number of rounds — in the neighborhood of 50 to 60 — were fired in a very short period of time” during the confrontation.
Authorities said Brown is expected to face several charges, including two counts of armed assault with intent to murder, as well as firearms-related offences.
The disturbing detail about the alleged suspect
Following the shooting, attention quickly turned to Brown’s reported criminal background. Boston 25 News cited court documents connected to a man with the same name and date of birth, claiming he had previous convictions involving guns and drugs.
The report also alleged that Brown fired multiple shots at police officers in 2020 while already on probation in another case. Prosecutors had reportedly sought a harsher sentence at the time, but a judge handed down a shorter prison term that drew criticism.
