Cassidy Carter stared blankly into the camera as her mugshot was taken, her expression reflecting the dramatic change in her life.
The former substitute teacher from southeastern Indiana recently began serving a two-year prison sentence after pleading guilty in a case involving a 14-year-old student. Investigators said Carter sent the boy explicit messages and nude photographs over Snapchat while working at South Dearborn Middle School.
The case shocked the local community, particularly because those who knew Carter described her as someone who had enjoyed a stable upbringing and showed promise during her school years.
At 24 years old, Carter's future has been dramatically altered by crimes committed when she was 21. While stories involving teachers abusing students have become increasingly familiar, those who knew Carter say there had been little indication that she would one day face criminal charges of this nature.
Carter grew up in rural Indiana with her parents, Emily and Clayton, and her three younger sisters. The family lived in a comfortable home and frequently shared moments from vacations, sporting events, and family celebrations on social media.
Her father often posted proudly about his eldest daughter, highlighting her academic and personal achievements. Clayton, who works as a tree surgeon, regularly treated the family to vacations, including trips to the West Coast, Walt Disney World, and a cruise.
Carter also excelled as a student at South Dearborn schools. During her time there, she won recognition for an a cappella performance, an achievement that was covered by a local news outlet.
After returning to her former school as a substitute teacher in September 2023, however, events quickly took a disturbing turn.
According to court documents, Carter and the eighth-grade student became friends on Snapchat in early November 2023. Investigators said she sent him inappropriate messages and nude photographs through the platform.
A probable cause affidavit stated that Carter sent the boy messages expressing romantic feelings. One message included the words: "God I want you...so bad". Authorities did not publicly release the remainder of the message because of its explicit nature.
The student later reported the communications to a school resource officer, who informed the school principal. Investigators then interviewed the teenager about what had happened.
According to the criminal complaint, the boy told investigators Carter said she was in love with him and regularly sent nude photographs. He also alleged she wanted to have sex with him despite knowing he was 14 years old. The first image, he said, was a nude mirror selfie. He further told investigators that Carter sent explicit photographs every time she took a shower.
When investigators seized and examined Carter's phone, they said the evidence confirmed the student's account.
Carter left her substitute teaching position in November 2023 and was arrested in early 2024.
She ultimately entered a negotiated guilty plea. As part of the agreement, the felony charge of child solicitation for sexual intercourse was dismissed, according to court records.
In June, Carter was sentenced to two years in prison following that guilty plea. The Dearborn County Prosecutor's Office has not publicly explained why the solicitation charge was dropped.
The case has had a significant impact on Carter's family. Despite the allegations, relatives appeared to support her in the months after her arrest, including taking her to a Taylor Swift concert in Indianapolis.
More recently, however, Carter has been absent from family photographs shared by her father on social media. While Clayton continues to post pictures with his wife and younger daughters, Carter has not appeared in those updates.
She will still be relatively young when she completes her sentence, but her conviction is likely to follow her long after she leaves prison.

A former teacher who took nude photographs of herself and sent them to a student before telling him she loved him has been sentenced to two years in prison.
While working as a substitute teacher in Indiana, Cassidy Carter, then 21, sent images of herself naked in the shower to a middle school student.
Court documents state that Carter was a substitute teacher at South Dearborn School Corporation from early September until mid-November.
According to the teenager’s statements in court documents, Carter added the minor on Snapchat in November 2023 and began sending him disappearing nude pictures via the social media platform every time she was in the shower.
Reportedly, the inappropriate pics were usually sent late at night, and after just a few brief exchanges, she started telling the 14-year-old boy she loved him.
Just a few weeks later, in December, the middle schooler told a school resource officer about the interactions. The complaints were then escalated to the principal, and the teacher was investigated.
It did not take long for investigators to find several nude pictures of Carter and many disturbing messages on the student’s phone.
Carter appeared in court in February 2024 on a charge of child solicitation for sexual intercourse and was ordered not to have any contact with the teen.
It has taken over two years for the teacher to admit her wrongdoing and plead guilty to one count of battery resulting in moderate bodily injury, WXIX reported. Carter was sentenced to two years in prison and given two days of credit.
The substitute teacher was originally charged with one count of child solicitation, but Prosecutor Lynn Deddens suggested that the charge was dropped after the victim moved out of the area and wanted no part in the case.
Sheriff Shane McHenry described the case as “Shocking, no. Alarming, yes.
“But the fact that they felt comfortable enough to tell an adult to bring this forward was an important part of this investigation.”
A former English teacher from New Jersey could serve up to a year in jail after admitting she sent nude photos of herself to a pupil via Snapchat and email.
Michelina Aichele, who is 30 years old, was arrested and charged with third-degree endangering the welfare of a child back in October of last year.
She was apprehended after police and administration staff at the school found photos and conversations of a sexual nature being exchanged between herself and a 17-year-old male pupil.
The messages and images, which had reportedly been sent via text, email, and social media, were sent between February and April in 2018.
According to NJ.com, Police have disclosed that upon interviewing the student, he admitted that the English teacher sent him four explicit pictures of "her exposed bare breasts and buttocks" on Snapchat while he was a junior at her school.
"He further stated that she sent him text messages through Snapchat, stating that she thought about him while masturbating," they added.
Before that, when it was just the school pursuing the matter, both he and Aichele had denied a relationship, with the teacher claiming that students had hacked her phone and sent the snap, officials said. When police intervened, however, the student gave up everything, admitting to the truth.
Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the teacher had sent the teenager indecent messages on his student email, and had allegedly asked him to take an online test which measures a person's level of sexual experience.
Aichele, who initially reportedly faced up to five years in jail for the offences, pleaded guilty in court on Wednesday for a reduced sentence. In addition to jail time (which is yet to be determined), she has been ordered to give up her teaching certificate, and will be on a sex offender register for the rest of her life.
At the time of her arrest, according to state records, Aichele was making $72,500 as a teacher at the school.
She will be officially sentenced in July.

A high school teacher has pleaded guilty to third-degree criminal sexual conduct after being accused of having sex with one of her students.
Jocelyn Sanroman, an educator from Michigan, admitted to having sex with a student she had been tutoring, and filming the sexual encounters.
She is now facing four to 15 years in prison, following her sentencing on Tuesday (April 28) at Oakland County Circuit Court.
Sanroman, 27, was arrested in June 2025 after charges were brought against her in relation to a sexual relationship she had with a 16-year-old student in 2023.
The teacher was working at Oakside Prep Academy in Waterford Township when she had intercourse with one of the students she was tutoring.
The judge presiding over her case said that she then recorded these encounters with the teenager, which took place at his home.
When admitting that she was guilty, the teacher admitted that it was not her "best thinking" when it came to her actions.
An investigation was launched into the teacher's actions after she confessed about the relationship with the student to a different teacher.
They then contacted authorities, and when a judge asked the teacher about what she was thinking, she replied: "Not my best thinking."
The judge went on: "This is serious risk-taking behavior, taking advantage of a minor and videotaping,
"You're having sex with a minor at his home, right? And it's just disgusting."
Sanroman's attorney claimed that she has unaddressed mental health issues, according to FOX 2.
The defense attorney claimed: "She made a tremendous error of judgment here. A lot of it has to do with her own mental health issues,
"She's going to have to undertake that on her own. She understands that, and she's working forward and trying to do her best to become a better person."
The prosecutor read a victim impact statement written by the victim's mother, who said that her family's lives will never be the same.
It read: "I watched my son's name be publicly judged and criticized for circumstances involving a minor and an adult,
"I have watched my son change. He has become withdrawn and avoids people because of the fear and attention the situation has created. I had pulled him out of school to place him into online schooling.
"His normal life, his education, his routine and his sense of security was taken."
She explained that the incident has left her with "constant fear and anxiety" for not just him, but other children, too.
Sanroman must now register as a sex offender for life.
Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald spoke after the teacher had her arraignment last year, saying that she was "accused of using her position of authority to exploit a minor victim."
McDonald explained: "As a former teacher myself, I applaud the teacher who contacted police about this situation, protecting other students from further exploitation."
She said that a school is where kids should feel safe, while officials from the school said they took action as soon as they learned of allegations involving Sanroman and her student.

After an investigation took place in Memphis, Tennessee, a sexual relationship between a teacher and a student was revealed - but that wasn't all there was to the story. In addition to the secretive affair between the 16-year-old former high school student and the 24-year-old algebra teacher, records have shown that he exposed the affair when she refused to pay him a blackmail sum.
Allegedly, the teenager outed his female teacher after she refused to pay him $140 to keep the secret between them. The legal records were released on Wednesday, including hundreds of messages between Jasmine Edmonds and the unidentified teenager she previously taught at Trezevant High School in Memphis.
Nearly 240 text messages between the pair were submitted as evidence, with the correspondence including proof that the 16-year-old attempted to blackmail the educator. One of the screenshotted messages showed how he turned on Edmonds after she refused to pay him to keep quiet, warning that he'd expose the affair. The message, which was sent at 9:30 pm, read:
“You Said We Had A Bet & If You Lie Our Little Secret Going To Be Out There That’s Not A Threat It’s A Promise. Then You Not Trying To Answer Or Text Back I Got Proof of Everything So 140 Tomorrow Or Your Career Over On My Grandma.”
According to WHBQ, a Fox-affiliated television station licensed to Memphis, the teenager was previously expelled from the school in March for throwing rocks at Edmond's car, as well as speaking to her over text messages.
Other records from the case were released by the Tennessee's State Board of Education, which included a statement from Trezevant High School's basketball coach. He saw Edmonds waiting for the student after basketball practice, he assumed at the time that the teacher was giving him rides home and didn't investigate any further.

In addition to this, the teenager's mother provided a written statement to school officials on the matter. She revealed that she had previously invited Edmonds to her house for Thanksgiving, as the teacher didn't have any relatives of her own to spend the day with. The mother added that she "didn't have any knowledge" of an ongoing relationship between her son and the teacher.
However, the documents released on Wednesday, which amount to around 60 pages, show that the relationship goes as far back as February 2018, WHBQ reported. Despite this, Edmonds was only indicted in November that year.
She is currently facing charges of two counts of sexual battery by an authority figure, and remains free after posting a $50,000 bond last week.

A former teacher was sentenced to three years in prison on Wednesday, after confessing to having a sexual relationship with her 14-year-old student.
Stephanie Peterson, 27, must register as a sexual offender for the rest of her life, after admitting to having sex with the eighth-grader in her car twice, as well as performing oral sex on him on multiple occasions.
The former New Smyrna Bead Middle School teacher's lawyers had hoped she would avoid jail, citing her struggle with bipolar, the loss of her teaching career in her defence, as well as claiming the victim was a "willing participant".
However, the judge insisted she pay for her mistakes after an emotional testimony from the 14-year-old's mother, who claimed her son's life had been ruined by Peterson's actions and pleaded for her to be sent to prison for the maximum 10 years.
"He is no longer the funny, vibrant, light-hearted child we knew," she said. "He is now untrustworthy of new people and even old friends. He’s angry most days … He doesn’t understand his new personality but can’t find his old self either. And it’s absolutely heartbreaking. What she did to him has completely changed his life. My child is gone. His innocence was stolen at 14 years old."
Earlier in the case, the former educator had taken the stand to claim she knew her actions were unforgivable.
"I wish I could make it clear how regretful I am for what has occurred," she claimed, reading from a statement. "If I could say one thing to the victim, it would have to be that I’m sorry, two words used too often without much meaning but I can honestly say with everything in my heart that I mean it to its truest definition."
She added that she hoped to atone by doing good and helping others the rest of her life, stating: "It’s all a huge misfortune what has happened. And I hope I’ll be able to make things right by staying on medication and attending regular therapy."
In addition, she spoke out about losing her teaching career, saying it was "the most meaningful thing in my life".
"Knowing I was in a position of power and misused that power to negatively influence one’s life is a morbid thought I have to think about all day every day," she said, this following previous claims that after her arrest, she had attempted to kill herself.
Peterson, who will serve two years of community control after her jail sentence, had initially got to know the victim after lending him her phone to check his Instagram account last November.
She later sent him a message and the pair's messages escalated until the teacher eventually sent the teen nude photos and told him she loved him.
Authorities were alerted to the situation when the victim’s mother discovered their relationship and raised the alarm.
Reportedly, a different teacher had called the boy's home to offer to tutor him, prompting his mother to jokingly ask him if the teacher was going to molest him.
In response, he started crying and blurted out: "Anyone could molest you."
