Dog the Bounty Hunter has temporarily bowed out of the search for Brian Laundrie after suffering an injury to his ankle.

The reality star, whose real name is Duane Lee Chapman, joined the hunt when he arrived at the home of Laundrie's parents, Christopher and Roberta, on September 25.

It was reported that he repeatedly knocked on the Laundrie family's door and asked to speak to them.

The 68-year-old TV personality had put together a search team in a bid to find Laundrie, a person of interest in the disappearance of his late fiancée, 22-year-old travel blogger Gabby Petito.

However, according to new reports, Chapman will be taking a break from the search and return to Colorado in order to seek treatment for an ankle injury.

WFLA news anchor Josh Benson tweeted on Sunday: "Just got an update from Dog the Bounty Hunter’s team. They say he’s headed back to Colorado soon to meet with his doctor after injuring his ankle in the search. He’s also raising funds to continue what he calls an 'expensive search'."

He added: "Team says he’s put together a talented network of local team members he calls the ‘Florida Team’ that will continue the search while he’s gone. He says he will continue to process leads in Colorado while he’s there."

Chapman's daughter, Lyssa Chapman, has confirmed that her father is heading back home - but did not mention the ankle injury.

She wrote: "Dad is headed back to Colorado temporarily to handle some business. (Remember, he was in Florida on his honeymoon). We are still actively searching for #BrianLaundrie, leaving a team in place in Florida. As always, whatever I can share with you, I will."

Petito and Laundrie had embarked on a cross-country road trip when the former suddenly disappeared.

On September 11, Petito's parents reported her missing after Laundrie returned to his Florida home without her 10 days prior.

On September 19, the FBI confirmed in a news conference that human remains were located in a campsite in Teton County. The body was said to be "consistent with the description" of the missing 22-year-old blogger.

Authorities had been awaiting full forensic identification of the body, and on September 21, it was confirmed that the remains belonged to Petito.

Laundrie, a person of interest in the case, has been missing himself since September 14, his parents told investigators.

Although he has not been charged in connection with Petito's death, which was ruled a homicide, he has been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly using a Capital One debit card that he had not been authorized to use.

He has been accused of spending $1,000 on the debit card between August 31 and September 1, The Guardian reports.
