Gypsy Rose Blanchard has shared new details about the night her mother, Clauddine "Dee Dee" Blanchard, was killed in 2015, including the chilling response her then-boyfriend allegedly gave moments before carrying out the attack.
The case has remained one of the most talked-about true crime stories in recent years after it emerged that Gypsy and her then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, had planned Dee Dee's murder. Godejohn later stabbed Dee Dee to death at the family's home in Missouri after Gypsy let him inside.
Dee Dee was later alleged to have subjected her daughter to years of unnecessary medical treatments and false diagnoses, with claims that she suffered from Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy, a disorder in which a caregiver fabricates or induces illness in another person under their care.
Speaking to Paul C. Brunson on the We Need To Talk podcast, Gypsy reflected on what she heard while hiding in the bathroom during the attack.
According to her memoir My Time to Stand, she had taken three Vicodin tablets and covered her ears while Godejohn carried out the killing in another room.
During the interview, she said she remembered hearing screaming and described the shock of the moment.
"I almost think I heard, 'Who are you?' was asked," she recalled.
Gypsy explained that testimony given by Godejohn revealed Dee Dee had asked him who he was before the attack. His alleged response was: “I am death.”
Gypsy also spoke about hearing her mother call out for her during the attack and the conflicting emotions she experienced.
“So I do know that that was probably what I heard. And I remember her calling out for my name and, like, I wanted to go and help her.
"Like, I felt like I wanted to go and help her, but I was terrified at the same time. Like, my body was paralyzed. I couldn't move."
She said she felt unable to act despite wanting to intervene, describing herself as frozen by fear while events unfolded inside the home.
Following Dee Dee's death, Gypsy and Godejohn were arrested and charged in connection with the killing. Gypsy ultimately pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and received a 10-year prison sentence, while Godejohn was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.
Gypsy served seven years before being released in December 2023.
Since leaving prison, her personal life has continued to attract public attention. She married Ryan Anderson while incarcerated, though the pair later separated and divorced. She subsequently reunited with former fiancé Ken Urker, and the couple have since welcomed a daughter together.
More than a decade after Dee Dee's death, Gypsy continues to discuss the events surrounding the case, offering further insight into one of America's most widely debated true crime stories.

Gypsy Rose Blanchard has opened up about the murder of her mother, placing the blame on her ex-boyfriend.
Clauddine “Dee Dee” Blanchard was murdered in 2015 at the hands of Nicholas Godejohn, after years of abusing her daughter.
Born in 1991, Gypsy’s early life was dominated by Dee Dee’s deception, who claimed Gypsy suffered from multiple severe illnesses and forced her into unnecessary treatments, medications, and surgerie - including the removal of her salivary glands and teeth - despite Gypsy being healthy.
Experts have since identified Dee Dee’s actions as Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a disorder where caregivers fabricate or induce illness in those under their care for attention or sympathy.
Gypsy’s attempt to escape culminated in the murder of Dee Dee in 2015 by Godejohn, whom Gypsy had met online and confided in about her mother’s abuse.
Gypsy let Godejohn into her home to carry out the murder.
While Godejohn carried out the killing, Gypsy waited in the bathroom, later confessing to the murder through posts on the Facebook account she shared with her mother.
Both Gypsy and Godejohn were found guilty in Dee Dee’s murder, with Godejohn getting life on a first-degree murder charge, and Gypsy serving ten years for second-degree murder.
She was released in December 2023 after eight years and immediately became a highly divisive public figure.
On Wednesday, Gypsy, 33, shared a lengthy statement on Instagram, slamming Godejohn, who remains in prison, calling him “deeply disturbed.”
“I’ve taken accountability and now, I take back my life. When I accepted my sentence, I accepted the weight of my choices. I served my time. That was my accountability and I’ve carried it for years. I don’t owe the past anything more,” she began.
Gypsy continued: “As for Nicholas Godejohn, Yes, he is a deeply disturbed man. But he also knew the difference between right and wrong."
“Regardless of my role of unintentional manipulation, (This type of manipulation isn’t rooted in malice. It’s often a reflection of past trauma, fear of abandonment, or a lack of emotional tools.
"The key difference is intent. This person is not trying to deceive or control, but the behavior still affects others and requires self-awareness and growth to correct.)”
“Nicholas made the decision to move forward with that night,” Gypsy wrote. “That was a choice, and he is not exempt from the consequences of that choice.”
“His diagnosis of Autism/Asperger’s does not excuse what he did. Mental health is complex, but accountability matters and no one is above the law,” she added.
She also noted Godejohn’s “fate was decided by a panel of judges, prosecutors, lawyers and 12 jury members who reviewed the same evidence circulating online.”
“His efforts of appeals have all been unsuccessful, each court agreeing with the original conviction,” Gypsy said.
The TLC star, who welcomed her daughter Aurora with fiancé Ken Urker in December 2024, stressed she has “taken responsibility” for her actions and is moving forward.
“I will not carry his actions on my shoulders any longer,” Gypsy wrote. “I’ve taken responsibility for mine. This next chapter is one of healing. Of growth. Of reclaiming my life. This is freedom. And I’m moving forward with clarity, peace, and self-forgiveness.
"The Justice system has decided. This case is closed. This is justice for DeeDee, as well as myself, who the system failed all my life.”
Gypsy’s post also featured a clip of Godejohn on Oxygen’s Detective’s Den in 2019, where he spoke about his struggles with mental health, including a “dark shadow” inside him being “triggered by anger.”
She continued her post, expressing regret over her role in her mother’s murder.
“Justice was served and so was my time,” she wrote. “My continued prayers go out to the Pitre family. I am deeply remorseful for the pain and heartbreak my actions have caused them.
"I recognize that nothing I say can undo the trauma or bring Dee Dee back. But from the depths of my heart, I will continue to express my sincerest apologies to them, now and always.”
Gypsy concluded with gratitude toward her supporters while addressing her critics: “To everyone who has supported me, stood by me, believed in me, and lifted me up. thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your love has meant more than words can say.”
And to the ones who said I’d fail … who said, ‘She’s just gonna go back to prison,’ or swore I wouldn’t make it past day one. thank you too. Because you lit a fire in me. You gave me the drive to prove you wrong. And guess what? I did.
"Against the odds, against the noise, I stood strong. I stayed true. I kept pushing forward and now, I’m just getting started.”
“You said I’d fall. But instead… I’m rising,” Gypsy concluded. “I’m about to show you what living my best life really looks like. And all you can do now..is watch me. #StillStanding #Unstoppable #WatchMeRise.”

Gypsy Rose Blanchard has spoken out in her first in-depth TV interview since leaving prison.
Now 32 years old, Gypsy Rose became a worldwide name following her involvement in the murder of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, back in 2015.
Gypsy Rose and her then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, were arrested for the murder of her mother. Godejohn received a life sentence for first-degree murder, while Gypsy was sentenced to 10 years after pleading guilty to second-degree murder.
The disturbing story exposed a history of forced pretenses, with Dee Dee falsely claiming that Gypsy suffered from leukemia, muscular dystrophy, and other severe illnesses. Contrary to these assertions, Gypsy was found to be in good health and not developmentally delayed. Dee Dee, diagnosed with Munchausen syndrome by proxy, fabricated illnesses to gain attention.
recently spoke out about her experiences since her release from prison last month. In an interview with Good Morning America, Blanchard shared her thoughts on freedom, her past, and her hopes for the future.
Recalling the moment she stepped out of prison on December 28, 2023, Gypsy Blanchard expressed her astonishment, saying: "I felt like I was in a black-and-white world and I just stepped into technicolor. It was amazing." Blanchard had spent nearly nine years behind bars for her role in orchestrating her mother's murder.
Dee Dee Blanchard had subjected Gypsy to a life of deception, convincing her that she suffered from various illnesses since childhood, leading to a wheelchair-bound existence, feeding tubes, and unnecessary surgeries. Gypsy's involvement in her mother's murder came as a desperate attempt to escape her mother's psychological abuse, as she was a victim of her mother's "Munchausen syndrome by proxy."
Despite the pain she endured, Gypsy Blanchard does not view her mother as a "monster." She believes Dee Dee Blanchard had her own struggles and explained: "I didn't want her dead. I just wanted out of my situation. And I thought that was the only way out."
Gypsy Blanchard, who is now 32, reflected on her transition from living with her mother to being behind bars, saying: "Honestly [it] wasn't that much of a difference."
"But I also had more freedom in prison than I ever had with my mother," she also noted.
During her time in prison, Gypsy Blanchard's story garnered public sympathy and interest, leading to documentaries and a drama series called The Act. Now, she is ready to share more about her life through a Lifetime docuseries titled The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard.
Her motivation for sharing her story is to raise awareness about mental health issues, Munchausen by proxy, and abuse victims. She hopes her experiences can serve as a "cautionary tale" for others, preventing them from taking a similar path.
In the docuseries, Gypsy Blanchard also addresses her past struggles with painkiller addiction, which she described as leading her "down a really dark path." She revealed that she was high when she participated in her mother's murder but did not use it as an excuse, stating, "I don't blame drugs. I don't blame anything." She has been sober for four years now.
Despite the attention she has received, including amassing over six million followers on her Instagram account, Gypsy Blanchard is conflicted about her newfound fame. She feels grateful for the support but also deals with self-guilt and regrets.
In 2022, while still in prison, Gypsy Blanchard married Ryan Anderson, who had written to her during the COVID-19 pandemic. Anderson waited outside the prison upon her release, and they are now together for the first time. The couple has discussed starting a family, but they have not set a specific timeline.
When asked if her relationship with Anderson is her "happily ever after," Gypsy Blanchard humorously replied: "I had to kiss a couple frogs to get to this one handsome face."

Before the death of Clauddine "Dee Dee" Blanchard, Gypsy Rose Blanchard sent her ex-boyfriend a chilling video that showed her part in the murder.
Gypsy Rose was born in 1991 but sadly wouldn't have a conventional childhood, as Dee Dee convinced everyone, including medical professionals, that her daughter was plagued with illnesses.
DeeDee outlined that Gypsy Rose had asthma, epilepsy, hearing and vision impaired, was fed with a feeding tube, was paralyzed from the waist down, had learning difficulties, muscular dystrophy, leukemia, lung disease, incontinence, heart murmur, anemia, hypoventilation, and quadriplegia.
Gypsy Rose was confined to a wheelchair and subjected to a litany of medications, surgeries, and invasive treatments, including the removal of her salivary glands and the extraction of her rotting teeth.
Dee Dee had falsified these claims as Gypsy was a healthy child but was the victim of Munchausen syndrome by proxy.
After years of abuse, Gypsy sought the help of Nicholas Godejohn, whom she had met on a Christian dating website, to free her from her mother's clutches.
In June 2015, the pair hatched a plan to murder Dee Dee, but before the killing took place, Gypsy sent Nicholas a video that only her attorneys were aware of before now.
In Lifetime's The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, a new docuseries, Gypsy said: "This is something I never revealed before to anyone except for attorneys.
"I made a video for Nick, like a walkthrough of what the house layout looked like, what my mother's bedroom looked like, because he would be walking into her room in the dark."
She continued: "I made the stabbing motion because I was high all of the time on pain pills. The side effects of those create this disconnection to reality."
The footage, which will be revealed in the series, shocked Gypsy's legal team at the time as she had downplayed her role in the murder in police interviews.
"One of the things that was presented was this cell phone video Gypsy had taken and it shows her walking through her mother's bedroom and she points at the mattress and makes a stabbing motion with her hand. The video, that was a very hard pill to swallow," said attorney Mike Stanfield.
He added: "We had no other case to look at, we had no precedent for this and we also weren't sure that there was even a defense we could raise. If we went to trial and we lost, Gypsy would die in prison, she would spend the rest of her life behind bars."
Dee Dee's life came to an end in 2015 when she was murdered in her own home by Godejohn.
That fateful night, Gypsy Rose let Nicholas into their home and hid in the bathroom while he brutally stabbed her mom to death, before the then-couple ran away together.

Dee Dee was found dead in a pool of her own blood days later and Nicholas and Gypsy Rose were tracked down in Wisconsin, where they'd escaped to via a bus.
With the circumstances taken into account, Gypsy pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, resulting in a prison sentence of 10 years, of which she served seven before her release on December 28, 2023.
Nicholas was handed a life sentence for the murder.

Gypsy Rose Blanchard, who recently completed seven years of her ten-year sentence for second-degree murder, has opened up about her feelings of regret regarding her mother's death. Gypsy's mother, Clauddine 'Dee Dee' Blanchard, is the deceased in this case.
While Gypsy Rose has been vocal about the abuse she endured at the hands of her mother, she has now shared her reflections on the past and what she wishes she had done differently.
It is widely believed that Clauddine suffered from Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy, a condition in which a caretaker fabricates or induces illness in a child, as described by Medline Plus.
Having endured years of abuse from her mother, Gypsy Rose crossed paths with Nicholas 'Nick' Godejohn online, and together, they hatched a plan to kill Clauddine. In 2015, Clauddine was found stabbed to death in her home. Godejohn was subsequently convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison, while Gypsy Rose received a 10-year sentence for second-degree murder.
On a recent episode of the podcast The Viall Files, Gypsy Rose was asked if there was anything she would have done differently to protect herself. In one part of the podcast, Gypsy Rose revealed her traumatic upbringing, stating, "This all started when I was a child, a toddler, so I grew up in a household where my mother said that she had magical powers and she'd put a voodoo hex on me if I ever tried to leave."
Gypsy Rose also discussed her mother's mental health, noting that Clauddine was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, which led to her claims of hearing voices and seeing shapes.
Despite her mother's condition and the abuse she suffered, Gypsy Rose's feelings of regret extend beyond the crime itself. She expressed a desire to have acted differently even as a child, stating, "I wish, even as a little girl, I would have maybe even said something like 'mommy hears voices' and just started telling people some of the smaller things, even if it didn't make sense to me."
However, Gypsy Rose acknowledged that her mother's isolation tactics made it challenging to communicate with others about her situation. She explained, "My younger years, it was easier, but the older that I got, the more she isolated me, and the smaller our circle became."
Today, Gypsy Rose is actively working on self-forgiveness with the assistance of a therapist. She aims to gain a better understanding of not only her actions but also the hardships she has endured throughout her life.

Gypsy Rose Blanchard, who gained notoriety for her role in the murder of her mother Dee Dee, is set to be released from prison after serving nearly eight years behind bars.
The case - characterized by deception, abuse, and a shocking murder - captured worldwide attention.
In 2015, Gypsy Rose was sentenced to 10 years in prison for her involvement in the murder of her mother Dee Dee, while her then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, received a life sentence for carrying out the gruesome act.
The case unraveled a complicated and deeply disturbing mother-daughter relationship. Throughout her life, Gypsy Rose was falsely diagnosed with a multitude of severe medical conditions by her mother - including sleep apnea, leukemia, and muscular dystrophy.
These fabricated illnesses led to numerous surgeries and interventions that Gypsy Rose did not need.
It was only later revealed that Dee Dee suffered from Munchausen by proxy syndrome, a mental disorder in which a person fakes or exaggerates the illness of another. Gypsy was subjected to years of medical interventions and lived under her mother's strict control.
In a shocking turn of events, Gypsy Rose decided to take drastic measures to escape her mother's abuse. She initiated a plan to have her then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, murder her mother. Gypsy Rose met Godejohn on a Christian dating website and knew that he had his own mental health issues, including multiple personality disorder.
However, Godejohn agreed to carry out the act with two disturbing conditions. He referred to himself as "Victor the Vampire," one of his many personalities, and insisted that he would use a knife to commit the murder.
His second condition was that he would sexually assault Dee Dee's body after killing her.
In an interview with Dr. Phil back in 2017, Gypsy Rose recounted the chilling conversation with Godejohn: "'Victor' said that he had conditions. One condition would be that [the murder] would be with a knife. The other condition is that he would have to rape her after he murdered her."
Gypsy Rose vehemently rejected the second condition, saying: "Absolutely not, I am not okay with that." However, Godejohn persisted, telling her: "It's either 'Victor's' way or the highway," and threatened to rape her if she did not agree to his terms.
Feeling trapped and desperate to escape her mother's abuse, Gypsy reluctantly agreed to the disturbing condition, hoping it would satisfy Godejohn enough to carry out the killing.
In June 2015, Godejohn arrived at Gypsy's house and stabbed Dee Dee while she was in bed. Gypsy, in the bathroom at the time, heard her mother's cries for help but was unable to intervene.
Later in the interview, Gypsy Rose said she "couldn't stand" Godejohn anymore. She admitted that she wishes the murder never took place and that Godejohn, instead, chose to help her responsibly.
Gypsy Rose is set to be released from prison on December 28.
