Heartbreaking update on brother of 7-month-old girl who was shot dead in her stroller in NYC
The parents of a seven-month-old baby girl who was tragically shot dead in her stroller have shared a heartbreaking update on her brother.
As previously reported, seven-month-old Kaori Patterson-Moore was fatally struck in the head by a stray bullet during gunfire on a busy street in Brooklyn, New York, on Wednesday (April 1).
The incident took place at the intersection of Moore Street and Humboldt in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg area at around 1.20PM, when one of two suspects fired several shots from a moped as Kaori’s parents pushed a double stroller carrying her and her two-year-old brother.
Disturbing CCTV footage captured the moment Kaori's mom, 20-year-old Lianna Charles-Moore realized what had happened, as she pulled back the stroller cover inside a nearby deli and began screaming in horror.
According to the New York Post, police sources say her father, Jamari Patterson, 22, was the intended target in what appears to be a dispute linked to a social media feud between rival housing projects.
It's been reported that the attackers fired toward the family but missed Patterson, instead hitting the baby in the head.
The same bullet then grazed her older brother’s back before the suspects fled the scene on a moped.
"We thought it was fireworks, but my son jumped out of the stroller, and I picked him up and carried him," the devastated mother said.
"I was hugging him, and then when I looked to my left, my daughter was just there, lying there. She was shot in the head. She was just bleeding. It was just too much."
Now, Kaori's parents have shared a further heartbreaking update following her death - revealing that her toddler brother has been "asking for his sister".
The two-year-old, who was also grazed by the bullet but not seriously injured, is recovering from his physical wounds but struggling with the emotional toll of losing his baby sister, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez told reporters at a press conference.
Gonzales revealed, per the New York Post: "He’s asking for his sister. He’s been traumatized."
The revelation comes as accused gunman Amuri Greene, 21, faced his first court hearing since he was arraigned on murder charges.
Assistant District Attorney Jonathan Visotzky revealed in court that a nine-year-old boy whose connection to the family is unclear was the one that was actually pushing Kaori in the stroller when the shots were fired.
Reports previously stated that Kaori's father was the intended target, and while Gonzalez would not confirm whether this was trues, he added: "We do understand the shooter said he intended to shoot someone in that crowd."
The family also denied that Patterson was the intended target, with Visotzky calling it a "senseless murder," while the family had simply been trying to enjoy "a beautiful spring day in Brooklyn on a public street that turned into an absolute nightmare for this family."
Greene was indicted by a grand jury with three counts of second-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder, second-degree assault, as well as weapons and endangering the welfare of a child counts.
His alleged accomplice who was reportedly driving the moped - 18-year-old Matthew Rodriguez - was arrested in Pennsylvania last week after fleeing following the shooting, authorities said.
He remains in custody and is expected to arrive in New York by next week, where he will be arraigned on charges connected to the killing, per the DA.
Gonzalez, who grew up close to the scene of the killing, added: "What makes this case so devastating is not only was a seven-month-old girl stolen from us, but she was not the intended target.
"She was in her stroller with her two-year-old baby brother when these gunmen driving by on a scooter recklessly shot into the crowd intending to kill a person. They will be held fully accountable."
