A heartwrenching six-word statement in the latest Nancy Guthrie ransom note may reveal where the missing 84-year-old is.
The mother of Today co-host Savannah Guthrie was reported missing on February 1 after she failed to arrive at a friend's home in Tucson, Arizona.
Investigators believe the 84-year-old was abducted from her residence during the early morning hours.
Now, newly revealed details from a second ransom note suggest her captors believed she was already dead.
According to reports, the message sent to KOLD-TV on February 6 claimed Guthrie "perished shortly after she was taken" and added that "she is buried in nature now."
The note reportedly ended with the words: "We are truly sorry," per Ktar.
The newly disclosed letter was one of two ransom notes received by several outlets shortly after Guthrie's disappearance.
While the first note, received on February 2, demanded millions of dollars in Bitcoin in exchange for the mother's release, the second contained no financial demands.
Instead, the sender allegedly claimed that Guthrie had died and that her abductors "never intended to hurt her."
CBS News reported that investigators believe both messages were sent by the same individual or group.
The details appear similar to information previously reported by Air Mail, which said a February 6 ransom communication claimed Guthrie had been "accidentally killed" and offered to return her body to the family for $4 million.
Police have reportedly taken the communications seriously because some messages included details investigators believed only someone involved in the abduction would know.
The sender allegedly described what Guthrie was wearing on the night she disappeared and referenced a damaged floodlight in her backyard.
Earlier notes claimed the 84-year-old was "safe but scared" and would be returned if her family paid the Bitcoin by 5PM on February 5.
The sender reportedly warned that the demand would increase to $6 million by February 9, "or else."
Despite those threats, no exchange ever took place, and Guthrie remains missing.
The day after one of the ransom notes arrived, Savannah issued an emotional public appeal alongside her siblings, Camron and Annie.
"We received your message, and we understand. We beg you now to return our mother to us, so that we can celebrate with her," the television host said. "This is the only way we will have peace. This is very valuable to us, and we will pay."
She later opened up about the uncertainty surrounding the case during an interview with former Today co-host Hoda Kotb. "Honestly, we don't know anything," she said.
The journalist added that her family "cannot be at peace" without answers and encouraged anyone with information to come forward.
"Someone can do the right thing, and it is never too late to do the right thing. And our hearts are focused on that," she said.
The Guthrie family is currently offering a $1 million reward for information, while the FBI continues urging anyone with knowledge of the case to call 1-800-CALL-FBI.
