Teacher pleads guilty to sex crimes against 11-year-old student who is also the father of her baby
A former teacher has pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a pupil over a four-year period, with investigators alleging the boy went on to father a baby with her while he was still underage.
Laura Caron, 36, who previously taught at Middle Township Elementary School in New Jersey, admitted to second-degree endangering the welfare of a child with sexual conduct, the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office announced on Friday, October 30.
Former teacher pleads guilty to child sex abuse
She was initially charged on January 15, 2025, before being indicted in June following an investigation by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit.
The investigation was launched after authorities received a report that Caron had a "sexual relationship with a male juvenile victim".
According to an earlier statement from prosecutors, Caron, a former fifth-grade teacher, allegedly began sexually abusing the boy when he was just 11 years old.
A probable cause statement obtained by People also claimed Caron gave birth to a daughter in 2019, when she was 27, and the victim was 13.
The boy's sister reportedly told investigators that her brother had said he was the child's father, with the statement also alleging that the boy would occasionally stay at Caron's home with his parents' permission. He reportedly began living with her in 2016, although the circumstances surrounding the arrangement remain unclear.
Teacher awaits punishment
As part of her guilty plea, Caron faces a five-year prison sentence in New Jersey State Prison. She will also be required to surrender her teaching license and give up any future public employment, according to prosecutors.
Before sentencing, she is due to undergo an assessment at the Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center to establish whether she is considered repetitive and/or compulsive. The outcome could affect the sentence she receives.
Once released from prison, Caron will be forced to register on the Megan’s Law Offender Registry and remain under parole supervision for the rest of her life. According to court documents, per People, her sentencing is scheduled for January 8, 2027.
