The heiress to a wealthy German shipping empire has died under mysterious circumstances after being shot at her family’s estate in South Africa, a day after an employee was also killed on the same property.
Caroline von Rantzau, 26, was discovered dead in her room at the Leeuwfontein Estate in Limpopo province on June 1, according to reports.
Gunshots had reportedly been heard across the estate, described as being in "South Africa’s Premier Safari Region," shortly before she was found dead with a fatal gunshot wound.
Authorities believe she was shot with a .357 caliber hunting rifle, reportedly the same type of weapon kept in her father’s gun cabinet.
Her father, Dr. Eberhart von Rantzau, is the managing director of Deutsche Afrika-Linien (DAL), a Hamburg-based shipping company.
The incident came just hours after another shocking death on the estate.
Financial manager Arno Koën, 44, was found dead on May 31 after being shot with a 9mm firearm.
He had been a close figure in von Rantzau’s life, described as a mentor, confidant, and even a "foster father".
Investigators are still working to determine exactly what happened to both von Rantzau and Koën.
"The results of the autopsy will give investigators information about the actual causes of death and will determine whether investigations will be launched against other persons," said South African Police Services spokeswoman Malesela Ledwaba.
So far, authorities have not yet released further details, and no arrests have been carried out in connection with either killing.
Initial claims suggesting von Rantzau had died in a car crash were later dismissed.
Before her death, von Rantzau had established her own business interests, recently purchasing properties in the remote region near the Mozambique border.
Her family company, DAL, is a major name in European chemical tanker shipping and has been under family ownership for generations, with the business now led by Dr. Eberhart von Rantzau as part of its third generation.
The deaths of both von Rantzau and Koën remain unexplained, leaving investigators with a complex matter to look into.

A billionaire investor was found dead from a reported self-inflicted gunshot wound at a Manhattan office in New York City.
At around 11:10AM on Thursday (February 23), police responded to a 911 call at 767 Fifth Avenue, where financier Thomas H. Lee's office was located on the sixth floor, as reported by BBC News.
The 78-year-old businessman - who helped pioneer the debt-fuelled corporate investment known as a leveraged buyout - was pronounced dead at the scene by EMTs.
Law enforcement did not indicate that a murder investigation was underway. Lee's official cause of death will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
In an emotional statement shared by the The New York Post, Lee's family wrote that they were "extremely saddened" by his sudden death.
His spokesperson, Michael Sitrick, shared the message on behalf of his family, saying: "While the world knew him as one of the pioneers in the private equity business and a successful businessman, we knew him as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, sibling, friend, and philanthropist who always put others' needs before his own."
"Our hearts are broken. We ask that our privacy be respected and that we be allowed to grieve," the family added.
According to the outlet, a front desk worker at the billionaire's office building was informed that there was an "emergency," on the sixth floor, but was unaware of Lee's death. They said: "They don’t want anyone going to that space right now, not even the building staff."
The businessman graduated from Harvard and founded the Thomas H. Lee Partners, L.P. in 1974 and served as the chairman and CEO of the company and its predecessors.
He was also known for obtaining the beverage company Snapple in 1992 and selling it two years later to Quaker Oats for a staggering $1.7 billion - 32 times what he bought it for.
Aside from his business ventures, Lee was also highly praised for his philanthropy and had served as a trustee for renowned New York City art institutions like the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the Museum of Modern Art.
Back in 1996, he bestowed $22 million to his alma mater Harvard University - part of which has been used to provide financial aid for students.
"I've been lucky to make some money. I'm more than happy to give some of it back," Lee said, per the BBC. At the time of his tragic death, Forbes reported that his net worth was estimated to be $2 billion.
He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Ann Tennenbaum, and his children Jesse, Zach, Nathan, Robbie, and Rosalie, as well as two grandchildren.
Our thoughts are with Lee's loved ones at this devastating time.

A South African business owner and wildlife trophy hunter has reportedly been found dead after being shot "in cold blood".
As reported by The New York Post, 55-year-old Riaan Naude was the owner of Pro Hunt Africa - a business that specialized in hunting tours of some of the country's most magnificent animals.
Naude would frequently take to Facebook to share images of him and his clients posing next to the carcasses of animals like lions, giraffes, and zebras.
However, South African Police Service spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mamphaswa Seabi has told local outlet Maroela Media that Naude's body was found covered in blood next to his car in the Limpopo province.
"The man was lying with his face up and there was blood on his head and face," Lt. Col. Seabi revealed, adding: "Police found two hunting rifles, ammunition, clothes, water, whiskey, and pyjamas in the deceased's [vehicle]. It looks like he was on his way to go hunting."
Lt. Col. Seabi said there is no clear motive for the murder at this time.
Per Metro, the anti-rhino poaching Heritage Protection Group revealed that authorities are currently searching for two suspects in connection with the fatal attack.
"According to eyewitnesses, a white bakkie [truck] stopped next to him and shot him in cold blood at a short distance, after which the two suspects got out and only stole his pistol," The Heritage Protection Group said.
The HPG added: "They then jumped into the vehicle and raced in the direction of Marken. Traces were trampled on the scene. All the personal belongings were still in the vehicle, weapons, ammunition, hunting equipment, and clothes were left as is."
Metro adds that local reports state that a nearby cattle herder heard a gunshot and then witnessed a white Nissan truck fleeing the scene.
Following Naude's death, many social media users have taken to the Pro Hunt Africa company's Facebook page to comment on the situation.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, many social media users left comments about how Naude's death was the result of "karma":
Continuing to taunt Naude's death, one person commented that the "world is a better place" and another Facebook user went as far as to say that the trophy hunter "got what he deserved".
According to The Post, Pro Hunt Africa charges clients $350 per day to hunt game, $2,500 for a crocodile, and $1,500 for a giraffe.

A 20-year-old stewardess was discovered dead on a superyacht after allegedly being murdered in the engine room.
Paige Bell, 20, from Johannesburg, South Africa, was found dead and partially undressed in the engine room of the £9.5million charter yacht Far From It, per The Sun.
Her throat was reportedly slashed, and defensive injuries on her arms suggested she tried to fight back against her attacker.
A party had been planned for Friday to celebrate her 21st birthday, but instead, her family is now facing what they call an “unimaginable journey” to bring their daughter home and seek justice.
The 39-year-old engineer, a Mexican national working alongside Paige below deck, has been charged with her murder after being found beside her body covered in blood with a knife in his hand and with both his wrists slashed, in what police believe was a suspected suicide attempt.
The Bahamas police confirmed officers were called to the vessel at 1:00PM on July 3 and found the suspect still alive but bleeding heavily beside Paige’s body, as reported by the Mirror.
A Bahamas police spokesman said: "We are investigating a murder and a suspected suicide attempt after a woman from South Africa was found dead on a yacht at Harbour Island. According to a preliminary report shortly after 1:00pm on July 3, the police were alerted to an incident on a yacht and proceeded to the marina area and went aboard Far From It.
"Once on board the vessel officers discovered a female unresponsive with visible signs of injuries and a Mexican national close by suffering from severe injuries to his arms. The local doctor who had been called to the scene pronounced the victim deceased.
"As police investigated further it was discovered that the victim was missing for a short period before being found unresponsive in the engine room with the male suspect.
"We can confirm that a 39-year-old Mexican national will be arraigned before magistrates today charged with murder which stem from the death of a 20-year-old South African. She was found on board a vessel at Harbour Island, Eleuthera, on Thursday, July 3."
The engineer appeared at New Providence magistrates court in Nassau, the Bahamian capital, charged with murder but was not required to enter a plea. He has been denied bail and remanded into custody ahead of a hearing on November 20.
Paige’s devastated family shared a statement: "Our family is facing an unimaginable journey.
"This evening mom and dad are flying to the Bahamas to begin the painful process of not only bringing their baby girl home but also seeking justice for the monster that took her life. We are devastated beyond words and now we must also navigate complex and costly legal proceedings in a foreign country – something far beyond our financial means.
"This heartbreaking loss has been deeply felt by everyone who knew and loved 'Paigey' – her former captain, the boat owner, all the crew on board and our entire community. We are humbly asking for your support whether by sharing this message or contributing financially, every bit helps. Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers.
"We are grateful for your love, support, and solidarity during this incredibly difficult time."
Paige had just completed a season on the Motor Yacht Sweet Emocean until December 2024 before joining Far From It as a guest relations officer. She was described by friends as a “golden girl” whose life was tragically cut short.
The alleged murder has shocked the exclusive Harbour Island, a three-mile by 1.5-mile billionaire’s playground often referred to as the “Billionaires' Backyard.”
It is a mecca for superyachts and is frequented by celebrities such as Mick Jagger, Prince Harry, Tom Cruise, and the Kardashians. Bill Gates has a mansion on the island, which lies 60 miles east of Nassau off the coast of Eleuthera.
On the morning of July 3, crew on the exclusive £120,000-a-week yacht noticed Paige was missing and could not reach her by phone.
After searching all six luxury VIP suites and crew quarters, a staff member found her body in the engine room, leading to the horrific discovery that has left the yachting and superyacht community in shock.
Mail Online reported that the engineer, a fellow crew member, had severe injuries to his arms when police apprehended him. After receiving treatment in the hospital, he was charged with murder.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to support Paige's family, and at the time of writing has raised $44,000.

The cause of death for a bride who 'died in the arms of her lover' while on their honeymoon has finally been revealed.
Madison Noronha, from New South Wales in Australia, was celebrating the start of her marriage to her husband Kyle in Amsterdam when she collapsed while out on a walk.
The incident, which took place last Wednesday, resulted in Noronha being transported to a hospital for major surgery, but unfortunately, she succumbed to her internal injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after.
The couple tied the knot on April 21, 2023, and footage from the event showed the happiness on Kyle's face knowing he was going to spend the rest of his life with the woman that he loves.
That time was tragically cut short due to this unexpected health issue.
Speaking of the incident on social media, Kyle stated that his wife "fought until the very end."
"The doctors could not believe the size of the aneurysm and nothing could prevent this from happening and nothing could be done to save her," he wrote in a post on Facebook.
"Madi fought like she always does right to the very end. She passed away in my arms surrounded by all her loved ones at 10:59PM here in Amsterdam," he continued, before adding: "My darling wife I cannot comprehend what has happened, I'm in a million pieces. Forever and always babe."
It was confirmed that Noronha suffered from a bleed in her brain which doctors weren't able to alleviate the pressure from.
A GoFundMe page was set up on behalf of the campaign design specialist's family, with the description that all of her loved ones are "left heart broken."
"Madi’s parents have graciously agreed to let us create this page, to help raise money to ease the financial stress and burden off the family during this incredibly difficult time," the description continued. "Funds raised will help with flights, funeral costs and to help bring our beloved Madison home to be laid to rest."
In only one day, over $60,000 (AUD) has been raised for the family, which has exceeded the original $50,000 target.
Kind messages have also been pouring in, with many left devastated by the tragedy.
"My heart is absolutely broken for you and your families. Madi was so loved and will be missed. She was such a beautiful person inside and out," one person wrote on the fundraiser, while another added: "Sending lots of love and strength to you all."
A third also commented: "I'm so sorry Kyle. She absolutely adored you. Thank you for looking after our Madi. Sending you so much love and strength."
Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time.
Rosie Roche, a 20-year-old distant cousin of Prince William and Prince Harry, was found dead earlier this month with a shotgun nearby, an inquest has revealed.
The tragic discovery was made on July 14 at Rosie’s home in Norton, Wiltshire, where she was found by her mother and sister. According to Metro, she had been in the process of packing for a trip with friends when the incident occurred.
Rosie, the granddaughter of Princess Diana’s uncle, was studying English Literature at Durham University and had been described by those who knew her as bright, compassionate, and full of promise.
Wiltshire Coroner Grant Davies confirmed that authorities have ruled out foul play. “Police have deemed the death as non-suspicious and there was no third-party involvement,” he said during the initial inquest proceedings.
The Roche family issued a short statement expressing their grief and heartbreak over the loss of Rosie. “She will be sorely missed,” a family spokesperson said, per The Sun. Her sudden death has sent shockwaves through both her local community and those familiar with her extended royal connections.
An obituary published in the Yorkshire Post paid tribute to Rosie’s memory, describing her as a beloved member of a close-knit family. “Roche, Rosie Jeanne Burke. Died on Monday 14th July 2025. Darling daughter of Hugh and Pippa, incredible sister to Archie and Agatha, Granddaughter to Derek and Rae Long. Private family funeral. A memorial service will be held at a later date.”
Rosie came from a family with longstanding ties to the British aristocracy. Her grandfather, the 5th Baron Fermoy, Princess Diana’s uncle, died by suicide in 1984, also involving a firearm. That historical connection, coupled with the tragic circumstances of Rosie’s death, has renewed conversations around mental health.
Friends and peers at Durham University have described Rosie as a thoughtful and intelligent young woman who was deeply engaged in her studies and looking forward to the future. Her death has left classmates and faculty stunned.
Mental health charities have responded to the news by urging young people who are struggling to reach out for support. “This is an unimaginable loss for the family and community,” said a spokesperson for Mind, a leading mental health organization. “We encourage anyone experiencing emotional distress to speak to someone, whether a friend, family member, or professional.”
The inquest into Rosie’s death is expected to continue in the coming weeks as more details are gathered. Meanwhile, the Roche family plans to hold a private memorial to honor her life and legacy.
