A woman was left stunned after her quest for her biological mom who abandoned her as a child led to a disturbing discovery.
As reported by TIME magazine, Adriana and her husband Leoandro, who both live in Sao Paulo, Brazil, have been searching for their respective mothers, who were both called Maria, for several years.
The woman hadn’t seen her parent since she was one and was brought up by her father, meanwhile, Leandro learned at the age of eight that the woman he thought was his mother was, in fact, his stepmother.
The couple - who have not disclosed their surnames - have known each other for 10 years and have a daughter.
Leandro grew up in the city, while Adriana left their hometown to work as a housemaid, married for 15 years, and had three children, according to The Mirror. However, once her first marriage broke down, she returned to Sao Paulo and that's how she met her husband.
But, Adriana refused to give up the search for her estranged mother so she called into Brazilian radio station Globo Radio in 2014 to ask for help, and was eventually reunited with her parent on The Time Is Now program, which specializes in finding lost relatives.
The pair shared a conversation, and towards the end, Adriana's mom revealed a piece of bombshell news: stating that she also had a son called Leandro, who did not know her.
Shocked at the realization that her husband was also her brother, an emotional Adriana said: "I don’t believe that you’re telling me this. Leandro is my husband," adding: "Now I'm scared to go home and find out that Leandro doesn't want me anymore. I love him so much."
"Only death is going to separate us. All this happened because God wanted it to happen," Adriana said. "All this happened because God wanted it to happen," adding: "We thought it was funny that both our mothers had the same name, but it is a common name so we just thought it was a coincidence."
Adriana confessed that she and her partner were "really knocked" at first when they discovered the truth, but ultimately they decided they didn't care what "anyone might think".
"Of course, it would have been different if we had known all this before, but we didn't and we fell in love," she said. "We have so many plans together. Nothing is going to break us up. Nothing."
The couple, who said they didn't blame their mother for leaving them, have spoken with her several times, per the outlet.

A woman has been reunited with her long-lost daughter after learning her son was marrying her.
Weddings often come with their fair share of drama. From that one guest who always indulges a bit too much to family disagreements that turn the atmosphere tense, it's rare for the day to pass without a memorable moment.
However, even among the usual wedding chaos, some occurrences stand out. In a rather extraordinary turn of events, the groom's mother at a wedding in China made a startling discovery: her long-lost daughter was none other than the bride herself.
Per the Hong Kong newspaper Oriental Daily News, the incident in question occurred during a wedding in Suzhou, located in the Jiangsu province in China.
According to the publication, the mother of the groom noticed something remarkable about the girl her son had chosen to marry.
Namely, her new daughter-in-law had a birthmark on her hand that was remarkably similar to a birthmark shared by the daughter she had lost and given up hope of ever finding.
The groom's mother questioned the bride's parents and asked if the bride had been adopted, and they apparently confirmed that she was, claiming that they had found a baby girl by the roadside and taken her in as their own.
Upon being reunited with her biological mother, and floored by the revelation of her relationship to her, the bride then broke down in tears upon hearing the news.
According to Oriental Daily News, she later told reporters that the moment she found out about her biological family was "happier than the wedding day itself."
For those of you worried about incestuous nuptials, it turns out the groom himself was also adopted - meaning that the now happily married couple are actually not blood related, and the wedding went ahead as planned.
The incident - which took place back in 2021 - stands in stark contrast to the mother-in-law who interrupted her son's wedding after the bride said she loved his flaws.
Footage of the jaw-dropping moment was captured by Sarah Ragsdale, who hails from San Jose in California, back in August of 2020.
Ragsdale later uploaded the footage to TikTok, along with the caption: "My sister's wedding a few years ago. Her MIL has always hated her. She's just [one] of those MILs that feels my sister is taking her son away."
In the dramatic footage, the beautiful bride can be seen exchanging the vows she has written for her husband. However, just moments after completing the vows, her new mother-in-law starts shouting at the bride, stating angrily: "You're not going to say my son has flaws."
The heckled bride responds: "Everybody has flaws and that's why I love him. You can leave. You can get out of my wedding now."
After refusing to leave, another woman approaches the mother-in-law and requests that she exit the room, causing the irate mother to threaten to have them arrested.
During the chaos, the groom - who is perhaps the person I feel the most sympathy for - turns away from his mother and stares at the ground.
He can then be heard telling his mother: "You have the flaws right now. You don't know how to act like an adult."
The video ends with two people attempting to calm the mother-in-law down, telling her "it's not about you, she in love with your son, accept it."
After the footage went viral, Sarah once again took to TikTok to share a follow-up video on the happy couple.
"Because everybody's asking and it’s gone so viral, I just can’t even believe it. Update is they’re married, happy, they have a baby."
She also explained that she removed the video from her account out of respect for her brother-in-law.
Congratulations to the happy couple - trust me, no wedding goes off without a little family drama (speaking from experience.)

Most of the time, family reunions are thought of as heartwarming affairs - especially when those people have been estranged for many years. But for 29-year-old Emily Angus, meeting her long-lost stepbrother didn't feel like a lifetime movie. It was more like a nightmare. Because Emily discovered that her sibling wasn't the man she thought he was. He was, in actual fact, in her words, "a monster."
Emily found her stepbrother Anthony Hutchings on social media, having never met him in real life before. Her stepfather and Anthony's father, Steve Airey, had married Emily's mother when she was 12, and she basically thought of him as her real father. But she knew very little about his son from a previous marriage.
After sending him a friend request in 2015, Emily managed to make contact with him over the phone, and invited him to meet her in Herne Bay, Kent - as he was living in Northampton at the time. They met, and for a while all was well.
Yet the more Emily learned about Anthony, the more disturbed she was by his behaviour and lifestyle. He appeared to be a habitual drug user, and would often lie to her about seemingly-inconsequential things. After the birth of Emily's son, Anthony tried to be a doting uncle, but Emily didn't entirely trust him.
And it turns out she had good reason not to.
One night, Anthony came to visit, and appeared to be traumatised and jittery. Emily thought nothing of his odd behaviour, but then a friend called her to deliver horrifying news: Anthony had apparently held two women hostage and sexually assaulted them, and what's more was the police were looking for him. Emily called the police to inform them where Anthony was, and they arrested him shortly after.
Commenting on the morbid discovery, Emily stated: "I learned from the police, over the next few hours, that he’d held two women hostage, refusing to let them leave an outbuilding,” she explained.
“He’d repeatedly kicked and punched both of them, holding a machete to one woman’s throat. Then, he’d handed one of them a kitchen knife, forcing her to stab the other in the leg, before also hitting her across the face with a saw. It was so barbaric… savage.
"Both women’s injuries needed hospital treatment, but he refused to let them leave the property for more than two hours. The woman who was stabbed eventually managed to leave, but he subjected his other victim to further violence and abuse, making her swallow medication that wasn’t hers, raping her and assaulting her with a hammer. The details were sickening. Anthony was a monster."
Anthony Hutchings appeared at Canterbury Crown Court in December 2017, where he pled guilty to two counts of assault and one count of perverting the course of justice. He was convicted on charges of rape, false imprisonment, encouraging an offence, sexual assault, taking a vehicle without authority, and breaching a suspended sentence.
Despite the betrayal she feels regarding Anthony's crimes, Emily remains adamant that she did the right thing, and is glad that her brother will never be able to harm another person again.

A father-of-two has taken to social media to ask for advice after he learned he was biologically related to his wife.
The man - who explains that he was "put up for adoption before [he] was born" - explained how his relationship has been shattered after routine health checks revealed that he and the mother of his children were potentially brother and sister.
Taking to Reddit's TIFU [Today I F***ed Up] forum, the man (posting under the "throwaway" account of 'u/throwway_wifeismyhs'), explained that he decided to get tested after it was revealed that his wife of six years needed a kidney donor.
"My wife got sick just after our son was born and now is in need of a kidney transplant," he writes. "We checked with her relatives and none were a match or a viable donor."
Despite knowing it would be a long shot, the dad-of-two soon received a call from the hospital that he was a match. However, he explains: "The doctor then said something about wanting to do additional testing due to some information from the HLA tissue test results. I didn't think much of it and agreed.
"Then the results came in I was shocked and confused. He explained that because of how DNA information is passed down through generations a parent to a child could have at least a 50% match. Siblings could have a 0-100% match. It was rare to have a high match as husband and wife. I asked what does that mean."
The doctor then told the man that he and his wife had an "abnormally high match percentage". He later explained: "This basically confirms one of my bio parents is one of hers." (Other options were that they could be first cousins or uncle and niece.)
Stressing that he was "not kidding", he revealed that he and his wife are biologically related.
Sharing more details about his childhood, the dad writes: "I was put up for adoption before I was born. Placed into a family that moved across the country. I knew I was adopted but we didn't have any [information] about my bio family. It was a closed adoption."
As a result, his adoptive parents are the ones listed on his birth certificate.
He then explained that he and his wife met eight years ago, and soon fell in love and he eventually moved closer to her.
Sharing further details, he adds that he is two years older than his wife and none of her family were matches for a kidney donation.
The father eventually says: "I don't know what to do moving forward but I know it may be wrong. She is my wife and the mother of our kids."
But after receiving advice from fellow Redditors, the father concluded in an update: "I am donating my kidney to my wife. We have started the full process. That takes time and a lot of preparation.
"I plan on talking to my wife after the surgery and after recovery. We will decide what to do with our kids. If we are going to get them tested or ever tell them. I will not be leaving my wife. I love and will always be there for her. I made vows and I will keep them. I love her more than I would a half-sister."
Thankfully, social media users were respectful and sympathetic to the man's situation, with one person commenting: "This might be an unpopular opinion... But they already have kids, he and his wife didn't grow up together... I would tell my wife, quietly have genetic testing done to make sure the kids were healthy, get a vasectomy to prevent more bio kids - and then never tell anyone.
"I realize some people wouldn't be able to get past it but that would be so f***ing heartbreaking to lose the love of your life like that".
A second added: "This is a very hard story, but the universe is funny sometimes. He was exactly where he needed to be to save her life, and his kidney is the absolute perfect kidney for her. Whatever happens to them, I hope they're okay."

A mom is seeking help as she faces the difficult task of telling her 30-year-old daughter that the man she thought was her brother is actually her father.
This set of circumstances has unfolded for an anonymous woman who is preparing to open up about her family's decisions but worries about the fallout.
Writing in to the Atlantic's Dear Therapist column, the woman explained that she married her husband when he had two children, but she had none.
Having kids was always on the agenda for her and she wished to do it with her new husband, but due to an irreversible vasectomy he had undergone, this wasn't possible.
The couple began assessing ways to have a child, and they came to the decision that a sperm bank was not the route they wanted to go down.
Instead, they questioned whether the husband's son would be willing to donate some of his sperm, so the child would have the "husband's genes".
The family went ahead with this plan, and 30 years on they face the prospect of telling the daughter about the events which led to her birth.
The unnamed mother wrote: "Our daughter is 30 now. How do we tell her that her father is her grandfather, her brother is her father, her sister is her aunt, and her nephew is her half-brother?"
She added that her husband along with herself are anxious about sitting down for this conversation and that her husband has another worry that she will no longer see him as a father figure, despite raising her.
Lori Gottlieb, a qualified therapist, and columnist for the Atlantic explained that the daughter will have to confront two truths about the scenario.
The first is that her biological father isn't who she thought he was, and the second is that the people she has called her parents for three decades have "deceived" her.
To handle the situation, Gottlieb explained that the facts should be laid out simply and concisely and this should be matched with an apology.
The therapist added that the mother will have to take "full responsibility" for her actions and not make any excuses during the conversation.
Further advice added that talking too much wouldn't help anything and that the thoughts and feelings of the daughter should be the priority.
To add to this, the brother also needs to be taken into account as he may have not informed any family that he has, and it is up to him whether he wants to inform them about what happened 30 years ago.
It's certainly no easy task, and we wish the mother well as she opens up to her daughter.

A British journalist who went missing in Brazil four months ago has been found in the city of São Paulo.
Charlotte Alice Peet, 32, had been missing since early February after flying to Brazil without telling anyone.
The freelance reporter, who has worked with Al Jazeera and various British news outlets, was found in a hostel in Sao Paulo, police confirmed on Monday, per the Daily Mail.
Authorities stated that Charlotte “expressed her desire not to have contact with her family,” and with that, the case into her disappearance has officially been closed.
What initially sparked concern was Charlotte’s decision to leave the UK without notifying loved ones. Her family only learned she had boarded a flight to Sao Paulo after her mother filed a missing persons report and police traced her to Gatwick Airport.
“I wouldn't say that it was normal, there was something on her mind obviously otherwise she would have let us know,” her father, Derek Peet, told Sky News.
“It's very worrying but I don't have any more to say, I'm very concerned but I just don't know what's going on, we're just trying to pick up the pieces really.”
The search took a turn in February when Brazilian media picked up the story. Charlotte had been spotted boarding a bus from Sao Paulo's Tiete Bus Terminal to Rio de Janeiro.
Later, she was seen in a beach bar near Copacabana—more specifically, on Gustavo Sampaio Street, close to Leme Beach.
A photo reportedly taken on February 15 showed her at the unnamed beach bar. Police sources confirmed she reached Rio on February 8 and stayed at a hostel in Copacabana until February 17.
After that, she moved to another hostel in the nearby neighborhood of Botafogo.
Though the initial missing persons report was filed in Rio, the case was bounced between jurisdictions before it landed with Rio’s missing persons unit, once it was confirmed she had made it to the city.
One particularly puzzling detail: just four days before leaving Sao Paulo, Charlotte had posted in a London housing group on Facebook. Her message seemed entirely routine:
“Hello. I'm looking for a double room in South West/East London: East Dulwich, Brixton, Herne Hill, Clapham, Balham, Streatham, Camberwell etc or would consider venturing east to the right place.
“I'm a 32-year-old journalist, friendly, respectful and organised. I love reading, keeping active and chatting to friends.
“Let me know if I sound like a good fit! Thanks.”
Despite sounding upbeat, she disappeared not long after. A female friend in Rio was the last person to hear from her directly.
On February 8, Charlotte messaged her saying she was heading to Rio and looking for a place to stay. The friend couldn’t help and became alarmed when Charlotte didn’t respond to follow-ups. Her family’s efforts to reach her also went unanswered.
Charlotte had spent two years working as a journalist in Brazil and reportedly returned to the country in November—again, without notifying her family.
For now, authorities are respecting her wishes. She’s safe, she’s alive, and she doesn’t want contact.
