Britney Spears' rep issues statement over her 'completely inexcusable' arrest
Britney Spears' representatives have released a statement after she was arrested.
As previously reported, the 44-year-old singer was reportedly taken into custody on a DUI charge on Wednesday night (March 4), where she spent several hours in jail before being released.
Spears was booked by the sheriff’s department at approximately 3:00AM. She remained in custody for around three hours before being released at roughly 6:00AM.
Court records show that the 'Baby One More Time' singer is now scheduled to appear in court on May 4 in relation to the case.
Spears' Rep Speaks Out
Following the incident, Spears’ representative issued a statement addressing the arrest and the singer’s next steps.
"This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable," they said, per PEOPLE. "Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life.
"Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time," the statement continued. "Her boys are going to be spending time with her.
"Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being," they added.
Past legal troubles
This isn’t the first time Spears has faced legal issues related to driving. Back in 2007, she allegedly hit a parked car in Los Angeles, leading to four misdemeanor charges and a jail sentence.
However, the charges were later dropped, and Spears ultimately avoided jail time after a jury acquitted her of driving without a California license.
That period of the singer’s life was also marked by significant personal challenges. During the same time, she lost custody of her two sons with her ex-husband Kevin Federline - Sean Preston Federline, now 20, and Jayden James Federline, now 19.
The singer was estranged from her sons for some time, though she reportedly reunited with Jayden around Christmas in 2024.
The 'Gimme More' musician's personal struggles have often been tied to the conservatorship that controlled much of her life for more than a decade.
The legal arrangement, which placed her father, Jamie Spears, in control of her finances, career, and many personal decisions, lasted nearly 14 years.
The conservatorship finally came to an end in November 2021 after 13 years, following intense public scrutiny and the global #FreeBritney movement led by fans.
In her 2023 memoir The Woman in Me, Spears opened up about how the arrangement affected her life. She wrote that it “stripped me of my womanhood [and] made me into a child," per The Independent.
