Brooke Shields has opened up about a disturbing experience she had while undergoing surgery on her labia.
The actress, 61, has shared an insight into her life in her book, Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old: Thoughts on Aging as a Woman.
In it, the Blue Lagoon actress opened up about undergoing a procedure to have her labia reduced after suffering from painful issues throughout her life.
However, after coming round from the surgery, she was horrified to learn that her surgeon had thrown in a "little bonus" she'd never asked for - which was also irreversible.
She revealed that her "wonderful" gynecologist initially recommended a labia reduction as she'd been experiencing discomfort, bleeding, and chafing since high school due to the length of her labia.
Brooke told Us Weekly: "Of course, it’s not covered by insurance because it’s considered cosmetic, which is very interesting. The last time I did check, I did not want to be a porn star."
She underwent the surgery, performed by a male Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, but was left shocked after he admitted he'd done a bit of extra work she'd never asked for.
Brooke explained: "He informed me that he threw in a little bonus," revealing that he'd given her a "rejuvenation" - which is described by NIH as "decreas[ing] the average diameter of the vagina, mainly for sexual reasons."
The actress felt violated that she'd been given the extra surgery she'd never asked for or consented to, adding: "It felt like such an invasion - such a bizarre, like, rape of some kind."
She admitted she was "dumbfounded" by what had been done to her, with the procedure also being "irreversible".
"Nothing pointed toward this need to be tighter or smaller or firmer or younger, especially there," she told the outlet.
The Golden Globe nominee revealed that she did not tell her husband Chris Henchy about it for "the longest time" as she "felt shame" about the experience.
Brooke revealed that she'd chosen to "share this very intimate information" with her readers despite some thinking it might be "too graphic or simply TMI", in order to dispel the stigma about female health.
She explained: "If we are to change the way we approach and talk about women’s health, then we need to bring up the uncomfortable but very real issues. Shame is no longer an option."
Brooke has not shied away from sharing her own traumas in the past, as she revealed in her 2023 documentary Pretty Baby that she was raped by a Hollywood executive when she was in her 20s.
She previously told People about how her daughters - Rowan, 23, and Grier, 20 - reacted to the information being made public.
Brooke explained that while Rowan already knew about the incident, Grier had "no idea" and felt "helpless" knowing that "something bad" had happened to her mother.

Brooke Shields has recently opened up about the uncomfortable things that were asked of her on the set of the 1980 movie Blue Lagoon on her podcast.
The 57-year-old actress and model - who started her career in the spotlight at just 11 months old in a shampoo commercial - appeared in the flick when she was just 14 years old. The plot follows the story of two young cousins who are shipwrecked on a tropical island in the South Pacific.
Eventually, the cousins go through puberty, explore their sexualities, fall in love, and have a baby.
Blue Lagoon has caused a lot of controversy over the years for its depiction of nudity - especially considering the fact that Shields was only 14. Her co-star in the movie, Christopher Atkins, was 18 and a legal adult at the time of the movie's production and performed his own nude scenes, while Shields had a body double for hers.
Any topless scenes were performed with her long hair glued to her breasts, per Buzzfeed.
On the podcast, Now What? With Brooke Shields, the actress reunited with Atkins to talk about the movie, and how it most definitely would not be able to be made today. "Never again will a movie be made like that ever. I mean, it wouldn't be allowed," she said.
To which Atkins replied: "Oh gosh no. Animals were hurt in the movie. We were spearing fish and all kinds of crazy things. Children are naked running down a beach, couldn't do that now." He went on to explain that the nudity aspect of the film was "important" to director Randal Kleiser, and that he insisted Shields and Atkins get tans for their roles.
"We were never eased into it. We got there and they instantly wanted us to be tanned. Remember, they set up those little thatched areas so that we could get tanned without tan lines," Shields added.
Atkins, now 61, then discussed how the pair reacted to nude scenes in the movie, saying: "There were scenes where I was butt naked with you, if you remember, sliding down that slide and things like that. And that was a little awkward, but it was kind of funny for me because at this point in time I would just do it. But your reaction was: 'Ugh, oh god.'"
The pair then touched upon how Kleiser tried to push the then-14 and 18-year-olds into a real-life romance, with Shields revealing: "They wanted us so desperately to fall in love with each other. I did not react well being forced into feeling anything.
"I hadn't even kissed anybody by that age."
Shields - who also starred in a now-infamous Calvin Klein jeans advertisement as a teen - then spoke about how unethical the production was, speaking about how they both got injured and became ill during filming.
"There were long hours and there was a lot of physical stuff in that movie. Climbing those coconut trees, man, I was chafed up to no end. Running over the coral and stuff, all the bug bites and coral cuts and all the other crazy things. The fevers and everything we had, people don't know any of that stuff - it's not easy," Atkins stated.
Shields agreed, adding, "Any kind of cut you had and you went in the water, bits of the coral would get into the cut and it'd become completely infected and ulcerated. We were like the Wild West but it just happened to be on the water.
"And I remember I got pneumonia... In the birthing scene, when I'm supposed to be having the baby, I uncontrollably can't breathe and have a coughing fit and everyone's like what a great acting choice, I'm like: 'I can't breathe!'"
The movie currently holds a very rotten 8% on Rotten Tomatoes after receiving unfavorable reviews.

Brooke Shields opened up about the uncomfortable things she was forced to do on the set of Blue Lagoon.
Speaking previously on her podcast Now What? With Brooke Shields, the actress reunited with her co-star Christopher Atkins to talk about the movie, and how it most definitely would not be able to be made today due to the controversial nature of it all.
Blue Lagoon follows the story of two young cousins who are shipwrecked on a tropical island in the South Pacific. The pair go on to develop an intimate relationship and even have a baby together.
Not only that, but the movie also saw her character constantly strip down and engage in sexual activities with Atkins, who was 18 at the time while Shields was only 14.
"Never again will a movie be made like that ever. I mean, it wouldn't be allowed," the 58-year-old actress said.
"Oh gosh no. Animals were hurt in the movie. We were spearing fish and all kinds of crazy things. Children are naked running down a beach, couldn't do that now," Atkins replied.
He then went on to explain that the nudity aspect of the film was "important" to director Randal Kleiser, and that he insisted Shields and Atkins go as far as getting tans for their roles.
"We were never eased into it," Shields - now 59 - added. "We got there and they instantly wanted us to be tanned. Remember, they set up those little thatched areas so that we could get tanned without tan lines."
The 63-year-old Atkins then opened up the discussion about how the pair reacted to the nude scenes in the movie, saying: "There were scenes where I was butt naked with you, if you remember, sliding down that slide and things like that. And that was a little awkward, but it was kind of funny for me because at this point in time I would just do it. But your reaction was: 'Ugh, oh god.'"
While a body double did stand in for her for the nude scenes, Shields alleged that filmmakers encouraged her to pursue a real romance with Atkins off-screen.
"They wanted us so desperately to fall in love with each other. I did not react well being forced into feeling anything," she said before adding: "I hadn't even kissed anybody by that age."
Elsewhere during their chat, the pair also talked about how difficult filming for Blue Lagoon was as even despite their young ages, they had to do stunts - some of which left them injured.
"There were long hours and there was a lot of physical stuff in that movie," Atkins recalled. "Climbing those coconut trees, man, I was chafed up to no end. Running over the coral and stuff, all the bug bites and coral cuts and all the other crazy things. The fevers and everything we had, people don't know any of that stuff - it's not easy."
Shields agreed, stating that the pair were forced to deal with infections from cuts they got.
"Any kind of cut you had and you went in the water, bits of the coral would get into the cut and it'd become completely infected and ulcerated," she said. "We were like the Wild West but it just happened to be on the water.
"And I remember I got pneumonia... In the birthing scene, when I'm supposed to be having the baby, I uncontrollably can't breathe and have a coughing fit and everyone's like what a great acting choice, I'm like: 'I can't breathe!'"

Brooke Shields opened up about what it feels like knowing her own mother, Teri Shields, let her star in intimate scenes when she was just a child.
In a clip from her documentary - Brooke Shields: Pretty Baby - the 60-year-old star questioned her mom's intentions when she allowed her to participate in inappropriate scenes during the 1978 film Pretty Baby, in which she played a child prostitute.
In the movie, Shields was forced to kiss Keith Carradine - who was 27 at the time - while also appearing naked in some of the scenes. It was reported that her mother just stood by and watched it all take place, telling her daughter that it was all just "make-believe".
She stated that her own daughters - Rowan, 22, and Grier, 19 - refuse to watch it due to its "p*rnographic" nature.
"It's child p*rnography," Rowan says in the clip. "Would you have let us [do that] at the age of 11?"
The mom replies back with "No" before breaking down in tears.
Speaking to The Sunday Times about the incident, the actress explained: "That was hard for me, to not justify my mom to them, but when they asked, I thought, 'Oh God, I have to admit this.'
"But I don't know why she thought it was all right," she adds.
As per the Daily Mail, the star's mother was an alcoholic who passed away in 2012. Shields admitted that despite what she went through, she could not be angry at her as her mom was so insecure.
Not only was Shields forced to take part in nude scenes as a child, she also posed for a Playboy publication at the age of 10.
"I don't know why she thought it was all right. I don't know," she said.
The actress, who also starred in Suddenly Susan and That '70s Show, revealed that it felt strange not to justify her mom's actions while speaking of the incident, which is something she had been doing all of her life.
"That was... that was hard for me, to not justify my mom to them, but when they asked me, I thought, 'Oh God, I have to admit this," Shields told The Times when speaking about the documentary.
"I mean, I could say, 'Oh, it was the time back then,' or 'Oh, it was art.' But I don't know why she thought it was all right. I don't know."
Shields was later forced to take on roles in Blue Lagoon and Endless Love, both of which featured nude and sexual scenes.
The former saw her character constantly strip down and engage in sexual activities with her costar Christopher Atkins, who was 18 at the time. Shields was 14.
While a body double did stand in for her, she alleged that filmmakers encouraged her to pursue a real romance with Atkins off-screen.
In that same year, she also graced the cover of Vogue as the youngest cover star ever.
The following year, Shields starred in the romantic drama, Endless Love, where she played a love-struck teen who was forbidden from seeing her childhood sweetheart.
But what really propelled her to superstardom was her advertisement for Calvin Klein Jeans. The campaign saw her topless for some of the shots, while the others were seemingly just as inappropriate and provocative as she was snapped in several different poses on a bed wearing a short skirt.
Elsewhere during the documentary, Shields also opens up about a sexual assault incident that saw her blaming herself for years after. Shields was in her 20s during the "lowest point of [her] career" when the horrifying ordeal occurred.
She spoke about how she had just finished having dinner with a Hollywood executive, hoping she was going to get a role in a movie at the end of it. However, he instead got her to call a cab to his hotel room where she was assaulted.
"I didn't fight," she recounts in the documentary. "I just froze."
Things got worse as the actress started blaming herself for what had happened, focusing on all the little details from that night.
"I kept saying, 'I shouldn't have done that. Why did I go up with him? I shouldn't have had that drink at dinner.'
"It was really easy to disassociate because by then it was old hat," she recalls. "And because it was a fight-or-flight type of choice. Fight was not an option, so you just leave your body. 'You're not there. It didn't happen.'"
In order to overcome the memory, she learned how to disassociate.
"I'd always had a sense of disassociation from my body. From my sexuality," she says. "I was mostly a cover girl, so it's all here," Shields added, indicating from her neck up: "And it was just easier to shut myself off. I was good at it."
Now, she's sharing her experience "with the hopes of helping people not feel alone."
"Everybody processes their own trauma on a different timeline. I want to be an advocate for women to be able to speak their truth," the 60-year-old added.
"I always kept going, like a bull in a china shop... I will not be defeated."

Brooke Shields has taken to social media to share pictures of her recovery in hospital.
In a post made on Friday, March 27, the 55-year-old actress and model took to her official Instagram account to share four pictures with her 1.2 million followers on the platform.
One picture which shows Shields lying in bed, sitting in a wheelchair with a heavily-bandaged leg, was captioned: "I've come a long way since this, but the journey is just beginning. [sic]"
According to People magazine, Shields was involved in a serious accident while using a balance board at the New York City gym in January of 2021, which left her with a broken femur.
The star stated in a recent interview with the publication that the pain was "excruciating."
Shields was rushed to a nearby hospital and there underwent surgery where doctors placed two metal rods near her hip.
However, she then needed another five more rods and a metal plate to anchor it in place.
The Lipstick Jungle star was released two and a half weeks ago but then developed a severe staph infection and was forced to return to hospital.
After more emergency surgery and three blood infusions, Shields has begun the grueling process of physical therapy needed to get back on her feet again.
Commenting on the experience, Shields told People:
"For the first time in my entire life, I thought: 'I can't power through this.' I can't even stand on my leg or go up a step. I need to relearn how to even walk. The feeling of helplessness is shocking."
She continued: "I'm the only one that's going to be able to get through this. My career has actually been like that as well. One door gets slammed in my face and I search for another.
"This is my journey, and if it took me breaking the largest bone in my body, then recovery is something I want to share. We have to believe in ourselves and encourage one another. There's no other way to get through life, period."
