Burt Young, a star in the Rocky series, has passed away aged 83 and Sylvester Stallone has paid his respects online.
The Rocky movies took the world by storm in the 70s, so much so that there were six of them altogether and two spin-offs featuring the son of Apollo Creed.
It ensured that those involved were propelled into stardom - including Burt Young who played the loveable character of Paulie.
Young's family has now confirmed the actor has sadly died aged 83.
As reported by Sky News, the news was confirmed on Wednesday, October 18, by his daughter Anne Morea Steingieser.
Burt was celebrated not only for his compelling performances but also for his roles in titles such as The Sopranos, Once Upon A Time In America, and Chinatown.
However, it was his portrayal of Paulie Pennino in the 1976 film Rocky that catapulted him to stardom. He portrayed a quick-tempered meat packer, who was often harsh towards his sister Adrian, portrayed by Talia Shire.
His character, Paulie, famously clashed with Adrian for her refusal to go on a Thanksgiving date with his friend and colleague, Rocky Balboa, played by Stallone.
Stallone, Young's co-star and longtime friend, paid a heartfelt tribute to the late actor through an emotional Instagram post. In the accompanying caption, he wrote: "To my dear friend Burt Young, you were an incredible man and artist, I and the world will miss you very much... RIP."
Other people flooded the comments with their condolences, as one person wrote: "Rocky taught me that a friend can be imperfect, moody and stubborn, but a good friend never abandons us, like Paulie. Thanks for being part of my childhood, Burt!"
A second said: "What a sad day for all of us. We’re so sorry to hear about the loss of your dear friend. He is irreplaceable & unforgettable."
A third added: "This is such sad news. I had the great honor of meeting him briefly here in Philly, he was the kindest man. Rest in peace, Burt. My kids and I will always cherish the joy you brought to our lives."
Rocky went on to achieve incredible success. The movie received ten Oscar nominations, with Young himself earning a nomination for Best Supporting Actor. In 1977, the film secured three of those nominations, including the coveted Best Picture award. It also clinched the Best Motion Picture accolade at the Golden Globes that same year.
Young continued to reprise his role in all five Rocky sequels, culminating in 2006's Rocky Balboa. Over the course of the series, his character evolved into the franchise's beloved comic relief.
Young leaves behind his daughter, a grandchild, and a brother. The cause of his death has not been disclosed.
Our thoughts are with Young's loved ones during this difficult time.
