Sylvester Stallone has spoken out about the "devastating" death of his son.
In a new documentary titled Sly, which officially debuted on Netflix on November 3 after its initial release in September, the 77-year-old opened up about the death of his son, Sage.
In July 2012, Sage suffered a medical emergency due to coronary artery disease and tragically passed away shortly after.
The father-son duo starred in the 1990 motion picture Rocky V where they took on the mirroring roles of Rocky Balboa and his son Robert. The pair had a strained relationship throughout the films as Rocky spent a massive portion of his time mentoring young boxer Tommy Gunn, which made Robert feel neglected.
In the documentary, Stallone admits that the difficult relationship we saw on the big screen was an accurate reflection of the relationship the actor had with his own son at the time.
Check out the trailer for Sly:"I try to take something that actually is what I wish I had done in real life, but I wasn't able to do that in reality," the three-time Academy Award nominee said as per the Daily Mail. "And so quite often I would do it theatrically, magically ... a lot of that is true."
He also went on to outline the difficulties of balance, stating that it was difficult to prioritize his family during the peak of his career.
"Unfortunately, you put things before your family," he said in the documentary. "And the repercussions are quite radical and devastating."
Speaking of his relationship with his father back in 1996, Sage opened up about the similarities he portrayed in the Rocky franchise.
"When I was screaming, 'You never spent time with me! You never spent time with my mother,' that was true," he said. "I was looking into my father's face and really saying that."
Sage added that "after the film, everything changed" between him and his father - for the better, of course.
"I got a lot of things out," he admitted. "We broke into tears a few times. We'd do anything for each other."
There were numerous clips of the pair walking the red carpet for the premiere of Rocky V.
"There's a line in the movie, 'I'm so glad he's born because now I can live through your eyes,'" Stallone said at the premiere, as seen in the Netflix doc. "That, I think, is what fathers look to their children for. It's an extension of, a slice of immortality.
"As long as he's alive, your memory will always be alive, that you did something right. I mean, you hope for that," he added.
After the death of his son, the 77-year-old opened up about how he was living with the grief.
"Time, hopefully, will heal, and you try to get through it, but it's just something,' he said during an interview on Good Morning America. "It's a reality of life. I think it's important to get back and start reliving your life. Otherwise, you can go into a spiral."
The actor is also father to daughters Sophia, 27, and Sistine, 25, and Scarlet, 21, with wife Jennifer Flavin, 55. He has two sons with first wife Sasha Czack, 73 - Seargeoh, 44, and Sage.
Sly is now available to watch on Netflix.

Adam Sandler, who starred alongside Weathers on four separate occasions including Happy Gilmore and Little Nicky, took to Twitter (better known now as X) to write: "A true great man. Great dad. Burt Young, a star in the Rocky series, has passed away aged 83 and Sylvester Stallone has paid his respects online.
The Rocky movies took the world by storm in the 70s, so much so that there were six of them altogether and two spin-offs featuring the son of Apollo Creed.
It ensured that those involved were propelled into stardom - including Burt Young who played the loveable character of Paulie.
Young's family has now confirmed the actor has sadly died aged 83.
As reported by Sky News, the news was confirmed on Wednesday, October 18, by his daughter Anne Morea Steingieser.
Burt was celebrated not only for his compelling performances but also for his roles in titles such as The Sopranos, Once Upon A Time In America, and Chinatown.
However, it was his portrayal of Paulie Pennino in the 1976 film Rocky that catapulted him to stardom. He portrayed a quick-tempered meat packer, who was often harsh towards his sister Adrian, portrayed by Talia Shire.
His character, Paulie, famously clashed with Adrian for her refusal to go on a Thanksgiving date with his friend and colleague, Rocky Balboa, played by Stallone.
Stallone, Young's co-star and longtime friend, paid a heartfelt tribute to the late actor through an emotional Instagram post. In the accompanying caption, he wrote: "To my dear friend Burt Young, you were an incredible man and artist, I and the world will miss you very much... RIP."
Other people flooded the comments with their condolences, as one person wrote: "Rocky taught me that a friend can be imperfect, moody and stubborn, but a good friend never abandons us, like Paulie. Thanks for being part of my childhood, Burt!"
A second said: "What a sad day for all of us. We’re so sorry to hear about the loss of your dear friend. He is irreplaceable & unforgettable."
A third added: "This is such sad news. I had the great honor of meeting him briefly here in Philly, he was the kindest man. Rest in peace, Burt. My kids and I will always cherish the joy you brought to our lives."
Rocky went on to achieve incredible success. The movie received ten Oscar nominations, with Young himself earning a nomination for Best Supporting Actor. In 1977, the film secured three of those nominations, including the coveted Best Picture award. It also clinched the Best Motion Picture accolade at the Golden Globes that same year.
Young continued to reprise his role in all five Rocky sequels, culminating in 2006's Rocky Balboa. Over the course of the series, his character evolved into the franchise's beloved comic relief.
Young leaves behind his daughter, a grandchild, and a brother. The cause of his death has not been disclosed.
Our thoughts are with Young's loved ones during this difficult time.

I lost him just like that, didn't get a chance to say goodbye to him. I would give anything right now to give him a big ole hug and a big ole kiss before he crossed over and just say thank you and I love you and I respect you. I didn't get a chance to say that, but such is life, as many of you know."
He added that Rocky died as a result of deep vein thrombosis, stating: "He had not been feeling well. He'd been battling a cold and infection and on Tuesday he had what's called a deep vein thrombosis, which is essentially a blood clot in the leg. But you were ripped away from me so fast without warning. [sic'"

Sylvester Stallone threatened to go "full Rambo" and destroy his family property when he thought that one of his daughters was pregnant.
The 76-year-old Rocky star will be appearing in his new reality TV show The Family Stallone which will feature his wife Jennifer, 54, and their daughters Sophia, 26, Sistine, 24, and Scarlet, 20.
The series - which premieres on Paramount+ on Thursday (May 18) - will give viewers a fascinating glimpse into the famous star and his family's work and love lives in California.
We all know that Stallone is an overprotective dad, but it seems like he had a pretty extreme meltdown after one of his daughters pretended to be pregnant, according to The Mirror.
Watch The Family Stallone trailer below:The outlet reported that in one scene the family was celebrating the Hollywood star's birthday and amid festivities, his middle daughter Sistine surprised him with a fake "I'm pregnant" cake.
This apparently caused Stallone to lose his mind and declare: "Please turn these cameras off so I can destroy this place, I'm going full Rambo." Luckily, the it didn't last long as his wife of 26 years was able to calm him down before he managed to cause any damage.
Sistine - who is an actress and model - spoke about her famous father's behavior towards his daughters' dating lives and said, per The Mirror: "He’s very overprotective and quite intimidating. Dating when you have the dad that we do is rough."
"The first time a boy came over to meet my parents, he’s going in for the first kiss. I was so nervous and excited," she continued. "He looked up at the balcony and said, 'Oh my God, what is that?' It was my dad, standing on the balcony, backlit so you just see a silhouette."
"He’s so cinematic. This kid jumped in the car and I never saw him again. Now that we’re older and in relationships, you’d think he’d want to make an effort and want to get to know the boyfriends, but that doesn’t happen. It does hurt my feelings that there has been minimal effort on his part," Sistine added.
This echoes the statement Sistine made in an interview with Today about the difficulty of dating men when your father is as "intimidating" as Stallone.
"It’s very difficult," Sistine said. "He’s quite intimidating to most, and most of the time when they come over to meet the parents, they don’t necessarily return, simply because he’s just so scary."
However, the award-winning star defended himself, explaining why he was apprehensive about meeting his daughter's dates.
"I don't trust their intentions. Because I know men," he said, before noting that his daughter Scarlet has "a really nice boyfriend" whom he likes. Scarlet agreed, saying: "He was great meeting him, and now they're best friends."
As any father will tell you, he quipped that he hoped his daughters would remain single forever, saying: "I'm hoping they turn out to be spinsters. I'm working on that. They stay home forever."
You can watch the family on their reality TV show - The Family Stallone - from May 17 on Paramount+.
