Jelly Roll has opened up about the lifestyle changes that helped him lose more than 275 pounds, after originally weighing around 540 pounds.
The Grammy-winning country singer and rapper, now 41, began his weight-loss journey in 2022 after becoming concerned about his long-term health. Having battled what he described as a food addiction throughout his life, the star decided it was time to make major changes as his music career continued to grow.
Over the course of three years, Jelly Roll transformed his health through a combination of improved nutrition, exercise, better sleep, stress management and the use of weight-loss medication under medical supervision. The dramatic results saw him go from weighing around 540 pounds to appearing on the cover of Men’s Health in early 2026.
Speaking to Men’s Health earlier this year, Jelly Roll explained the foundations of his approach.
“So we start with the basics, and it sounds simple, but: eating well, moving, sleeping, managing your stress. All of that is curative, but it’s really the foundation of health,” he said.
The singer has repeatedly stressed that changing his eating habits was the most important step.
"If you're really battling obesity, you got to start at the dinner table, man. The walking's great, all the other stuff's great, but you got to fight that addiction at the dinner table," he told Fox News.
He also told People that he had “never had a healthy relationship with food”, describing cutting out unhealthy eating habits as the most difficult part of the process.
Alongside his lifestyle changes, Jelly Roll used a GLP-1 weight-loss medication under a doctor's supervision. He was also prescribed metformin by nurse practitioner Danese Rexroad at Ways2Well.
“Insulin is designed to help glucose enter the cell,” Rexroad said, per Men's Health. “When you have an excessive amount of insulin, it forces your body to store fat. So switching those receptors and switching what Jelly’s body was signaling with insulin helped him rapidly adjust his insulin resistance. I wasn’t doing a big science experiment. It was just meal timing and eating real foods.”
By 2024, fans had begun noticing a significant change in Jelly Roll’s appearance after he lost more than 100 pounds.
The performer incorporated activities such as basketball and boxing into his routine, helping him stay active while keeping workouts enjoyable. He also said the weight loss improved his stamina during concerts and made the demands of touring easier to manage.
A year later, he reached another major milestone, revealing that he had lost nearly 200 pounds. His weight had reportedly dropped from around 540 pounds to approximately 357 pounds.
At the beginning of 2026, Jelly Roll revealed he had lost approximately 275 pounds in total, marking a remarkable transformation from where he started just three years earlier.
Reflecting on the mistakes many people make when attempting to lose weight, he shared some advice during his interview with Men’s Health.
“A lot of dudes get to their bottom dollar, and we’re like, ‘I’m changing! Tomorrow in the morning when I wake up, I’m a different person!’ We attack it all at once. ‘I’m gonna run! I’m gonna lift! I’m gonna eat right. I’m gonna do this and this and this.’ Listen, man, because I’ve done this before: Just pick one of those. And you know which one you need to pick? Food. Start there. F**k everything else. Just commit yourself to ‘I’m gonna count every calorie and macro that goes in my mouth’, ” he told Men’s Health.

Jelly Roll, born Jason DeFord, is unrecognizable to many as he embarks on his first-ever Australian headlining tour.
The 40-year-old country star, known for his hits like 'I Need a Favor' and 'I Am Not Okay,' has undergone a dramatic transformation over the past few years.
Once tipping the scales at 550 pounds, Jelly Roll has shed an astonishing 200 pounds since 2022, marking a significant milestone in his ongoing weight-loss journey.
As Jelly Roll arrived at Sydney Airport on October 21, 2025, ahead of his tour, his slimmer figure was immediately noticeable, per PEOPLE.
The heavily tattooed musician, donning a baggy black Reebok jumper and track pants, appeared to be embracing a new, healthier lifestyle.
While he attempted to go incognito in a Tennessee Titans hat, it was hard to ignore the 90 kg (nearly 200 pounds) he’s lost, transforming from the man many fans remember.
The Nashville-based star is set to perform at some of Australia’s biggest venues, including Brisbane Entertainment Centre and Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena. Additionally, he will headline the inaugural Strummingbird Festival, a three-city country music event set to showcase his talents alongside other top artists.
Jelly Roll’s weight loss journey isn't just about shedding pounds; it’s part of a broader goal to change his life and appearance in a way that he hopes will inspire others.
During a December 2024 appearance on his wife Bunnie Xo’s Dumb Blonde podcast, he shared his ambitious health and fitness goal: "I wanna be on the cover of Men's Health by March of 2026. That's my new goal. I wanna have one of the biggest transformations."
This goal is personal for Jelly Roll, but it also speaks to his desire to be open and transparent about his struggles with weight loss.
"I did this publicly for a reason. I wanna be honest about my struggles with it with people," he shared during the podcast, emphasizing his commitment to leading by example.
Jelly Roll has been open about the challenges he’s faced along the way. Growing up in Antioch, Tennessee, he admits that food was never viewed as a source of nourishment in his household.
"Nobody in my house ever had [a healthy relationship with food], so that was the hard part, really fighting that demon at first and getting into that discipline and that commitment," Jelly Roll explained in an interview.
His struggles with food addiction have been a central part of his journey, and overcoming them has been crucial to his success.
Reflecting on his past, Jelly Roll explained: “All I’ve ever known was being fat, and I’m f***ing miserable. I wanna sky dive, bungee jump, ride a bull, parasail, ride roller coasters, I want to LIVE a normal life and have a normal relationship with food.”

Bunnie XO has shared a candid confession about her sex life with husband Jelly Roll and how they navigated issues surrounding his size.
The country music star, 41, has been married to Alisa DeFord - better known as Bunnie XO - since 2016 and recently underwent a weight loss transformation, losing 130lb.
She revealed to Us Weekly that while they "always had a sex life", she admitted that "there were mountains and valleys [they] had to go through — especially when he was so big."
Bunnie, 46, added that since Jelly Roll - real name Jason Bradley DeFord - lost weight, he has regained a new "excitement and his new zest for life.
"It’s so childlike and just giddy. Just seeing him get to be the man that I always saw that he was."
She explained: "Even when he was 500 pounds (227kg), this dude was an agile, big guy. I’m like, ‘You are athletic under that meat suit.’
"Now that he has the weight off of him, he just gets to be who I always knew that he was, and I think it’s brought a new sense of happiness to him. Any time he’s happy, I’m happy."
Jelly Roll had opened up about how being overweight had affected things in the bedroom, revealing on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast in December: "My sex life was horrible. I couldn’t even get aroused, I was so big.
"Dude, I married a f***ing big-tittied, blonde, beautiful woman, you know what I mean? I married the kind of woman that makes you smile when you cry."
He joked that he was "having to play Twister to have sex. Left foot here, right foot on the X. Are we in there yet? Tell me if you feel something. I mean, it was bad."
He added that his "addiction" and weight gain took its toll on his family, explaining: "I realised that in addiction, the family will kind of cater to the addict. It’s nature.
"Like if somebody in your family was a drug addict you would help with their kids, you would feel a need to help in their absence — it’s what we do as a family, it’s human nature.
"I realised then how much my addiction was hurting this family."
Jelly Roll revealed on Bunnie's Dumb Blonde podcast in 2024 that he was 550lbs (250kg) at his heaviest, and regretted waiting so long to begin his weight-loss journey.
"I’m sorry it took so long," he admitted. "I cannot believe I walked around like a 550-pound zombie for years. I even look back at the pictures, and I was just hollow."
Despite being a candidate to use weight-loss injections such as Ozempic or Mounjaro, he revealed to Men's Health in January that he chose not to go down this route to shed the weight.
"I just remember everyone telling me GLP-1s, or taking the Ozempic or the Mounjaro, ‘Listen, it’s gonna hurt your stomach a little bit,’” he said. “I’ve treated my body so bad, I can’t believe God’s gave me this voice for this long. I didn’t deserve it. I literally didn’t do it out of fear.”
He lost over 130lbs after finding his size impacted the fundamental parts of his daily life, explaining: "I was so fat that there came a moment in life that my wife and I had to put two queen beds beside each other because we couldn’t fit in a king bed anymore, I was just all over.
"Now it’s a totally different thing. I’m chasing her around the house. I’m like a teenage kid again! I’m like the Pink Panther — I bust out of every corner. And she opens the cabinet and I go, ‘Hi!’"

If you grew up listening to music in the 2000s, you'll undoubtedly have heard a song featuring acclaimed producer Timbaland.
His work with artists such as OneRepublic, Nelly Furtado, Madonna, and Katy Perry earned him number one singles all over the world, and he even scooped two Grammy's alongside Justin Timberlake for the tracks 'Sexy Back and 'LoveStoned'.
However, in a revealing interview with Men's Health, the beloved producer and rapper has opened up about kicking his drug habits and changing his diet in order to shed a whopping 130lbs.
Timbaland - born Timothy Mosley - revealed that despite coming out of the 00s as one of the most successful producers of the decade, his life quickly took a turn for the worse.
In 2011, the now-47-year-old was forced to go under the knife for dental surgery. However, the rapper sadly developed an addiction to the pain medication (Oxycontin and Percocet) he was prescribed.
Then, two years later, Mosley started the process of divorcing his wife of five years, before being hit with a $4 million tax case from the IRS regarding unpaid taxes.
Take a look at Timbaland's home gym and fridge:

During this difficult time, Timbaland started to gain an unhealthy amount of weight - to the point where he became at risk of developing diabetes.
Speaking to Men's Health, the star recalled the turning points that changed his outlook on his health and well-being: "I would look at pictures and I was like: No way".

Timbaland then revealed the time he compared his own anatomy to that of a woman he was standing next to: "I looked at my breast, I looked at her breast, and I was like: we both can’t..."
The rapper then revealed that doctors told him that he was at risk of developing diabetes, and that's when he decided enough was enough.
Mosley entered what he now refers to as his "two-year 360" - where he cut out the prescription medication, failed relationships, and clouded mind that had held him back for so long, and instead adopted a new diet and fitness program.

He describes his newfound diet as "Plane Jane", and explains that "you're not eating for taste; you’re eating for fuel" - similar to that of a bodybuilder.
The 'Shock Wave' star now enjoys meals like prepped and delivered chicken and greens, as well as snacking on pineapples and other fruits. In addition, the producer will add kiwis, almond milk, strawberries, cantaloupe, and kale to his protein shakes in order to "give it that thickness".

Despite dropping an incredible 130lbs, Timbaland still says he doesn't feel "complete" - but that's something he's perfectly content with:
"God has me under construction, which I'm still under.
"I don't feel like I'm complete. I don't want to ever feel like I'm complete, 'cause my mind would probably get idle."

Jelly Roll's wife Bunnie Xo has spoken out about the unexpected downside of her husband's incredible weight loss - revealing that shedding the pounds can actually cause your sex life to 'slow down'.
The Dumb Blonde podcast host, 46, opened up while moonlighting as an agony aunt for Playboy, where she answered questions from fans about love, sex, sobriety, and everything in between.
It comes after Bunnie and Jelly Roll previously made headlines with some very candid admissions, including some about how the country star's transformation affected both his body and their relationship.
While responding to a fan's question for Playboy, Bunnie was asked by a man who said he and his wife had both started taking Ozempic and subsequently lost weight - but were now having a lot less sex as a result.
"It's like we're not used to our new bodies," the man explained. "Is it a phase?"
Bunnie's response suggested this was something she understood personally.
"When it comes to sex, slowing down after weight loss and Ozempic can be tricky," she said.
"Big body changes mess with your head and hormones.
"Add a medication that blunts appetite, and it's not shocking libido dips too.
"It's likely an adjustment period, not a permanent shift."
Given that her husband has lost roughly 275lbs over the past few years - going from 540lbs at his heaviest to around 265lbs today - it's fair to say Bunnie has first-hand experience of what that 'adjustment period' looks like.
This isn't the first time Bunnie has been refreshingly open about the physical side of her husband's transformation.
During an appearance on The Howard Stern Show in February, she confirmed something that had long been rumoured about significant male weight loss - that it had a noticeable effect on Jelly Roll's manhood.
"I will tell you that it is very true that when a man loses weight, it grows a lot," Bunnie said, adding that her spouse's penis now looks 'severely bigger'.
She also spoke about the emotional side of his transformation, telling Stern: "He's got a little strut in his step, and I think it's just the cutest thing. He deserves to have a hot streak. I'm ready for him to just feel his best."
The Grammy-winning singer has been just as candid as his wife on the topic.
Jelly Roll - real name Jason Bradley DeFord - previously revealed that before he started his health kick, he discovered his testosterone levels were comparable to those of a 'preteen boy', which had a devastating impact on his sex drive.
"You can't get it up without T," the 41-year-old explained in an interview earlier this year. "I was married to a smoke show, and I was still struggling."
He has also spoken on the Joe Rogan Experience about just how difficult intimacy was at his heaviest, saying he 'couldn't even get aroused' and describing sex with Bunnie as being 'like playing Twister'.
"Left foot here, right foot in the X," he said. "Are we in there yet? Tell me if you feel something."
Since losing the weight, however, Jelly Roll says things have completely changed, joking that he's 'like a teenager' again and can't keep his hands off his wife.
While answering questions for Playboy, Bunnie also shared some advice for a man who was looking for tips on matching his partner's energy in the bedroom.
"In my experience, confidence in bed isn't about being extreme - it's about being present and honest," she said.
"You don't have to match her intensity overnight.
"Ask what she loves, try what feels exciting to you, and say no when something doesn't. Enthusiasm is hotter than performance."
Bunnie's comments reflect a growing body of evidence around the impact of GLP-1 weight loss drugs on libido.
Rachel Goldman, a psychologist and professor at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, has previously explained that GLP-1 medications affect the brain's reward centre - the same system responsible for food cravings, alcohol use, and sexual desire.
A 2024 survey of 2,000 adults in the US, led by the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University, found that of those taking GLP-1 drugs, 18% reported an increase in sexual desire, while 16% said it had decreased.
So while the drugs clearly affect people differently, Bunnie's message to couples going through it is simple: don't panic, give it time, and talk to each other about it.
It sounds like she and Jelly Roll have done exactly that - and come out the other side just fine.
