Kim Kardashian has been slammed by critics online for throwing a lavish birthday party on a private island in the Caribbean in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star celebrated her 40th with her family and husband Kanye West by renting out a private island for a week, and went kayaking, swam with whales, and drank of cocktails.
British morning talk show host Piers Morgan recently labeled the Kardashians "bimbos":The controversy began earlier this week, when the reality TV personality took to her official Instagram account and shared a picture of herself with her 190 million Instagram followers.
In a lengthy caption, she wrote:
"40 and feeling so humbled and blessed. There is not a single day that I take for granted, especially during these times when we are all reminded of the things that truly matter.
"For my birthday this year, I couldn’t think of a better way to spend it than with some of the people who have helped shaped me into the woman I am today."
She added:
"Before COVID, I don’t think any of us truly appreciated what a simple luxury it was to be able to travel and be together with family and friends in a safe environment.
"After 2 weeks of multiple health screens and asking everyone to quarantine, I surprised my closest inner circle with a trip to a private island where we could pretend things were normal just for a brief moment in time.
"We danced, rode bikes, swam near whales, kayaked, watched a movie on the beach and so much more. I realize that for most people, this is something that is so far out of reach right now, so in moments like these, I am humbly reminded of how privileged my life is."
However, a number of social media commentators were less-than-impressed by Kim's post, and took to Twitter to criticize her for enjoying such opulence during a global crisis.
One Twitter user wrote: "Kim Kardashian evidences the class divide that persists via showing off wealth whilst aware that the majority can't enjoy in a lifetime the luxuries she affords daily? [sic]"
A number of other Twitter users have since created image macros satirizing Kim's post:
But regardless of the tone of her birthday post, Kim Kardashian certainly has had her life negatively affected by the pandemic. Indeed, in an emotional recent interview, she opened up about how frightening it was for her when Kanye West tested positive for COVID.
