There are some musicians out there who have some absolutely iconic looks: to the point where it's difficult to think of them without the eye-catching accessories that stick out the most.

For instance, it's pretty hard to imagine what Ariana Grande looks like without her signature ponytail, and when you close your eyes and think of Post Malone, it's likely that the first thing you picture are his many face tattoos.

But why has he gone for such a bold form of self-expression? Why has Post inked his face so much over the years? Well, in a recent interview the rapper opened up about it all, and it actually got pretty personal.

Watch Post get one of his face tattoos while hanging out in Tokyo:

Speaking to men's fashion magazine GQ in a new interview, Post stated that he was actually pretty self-conscious about his general appearance and that his tattoos were actually there to deflect attention away from his facial features.

Post stated: "I'm an ugly-*ss motherf*cker. It does maybe come from a place of insecurity, to where I don't like how I look, so I'm going to put something cool on there so I can look at myself and say, ‘You look cool, kid,’ and have a modicum of self-confidence when it comes to my appearance."

He also claimed that his self-esteem has never been particularly high in the past, adding: "Middle school, I would cry myself to sleep every fuckin’ day. High school, the same thing. I tried to drink some beers to get rid of that sh*t, but it just never goes away.

He then continued: "I don’t think that’s anybody’s fault; it has to do with something predisposed in you... It's difficult. Through my songs, I can talk about whatever I want. But sitting here face-to-face: it's difficult."
