Ryan Reynolds' rare comment on his marriage to Scarlett Johansson
Ryan Reynolds made a rare public comment about his former marriage to Scarlett Johansson.
The Hollywood stars quietly got married in Vancouver, Canada, in 2008 after a four-month engagement.
However, their relationship was short-lived, with the couple separating after just two years and finalizing their divorce in 2011.
Since then, both have moved on with their lives. Reynolds married Blake Lively in 2012, while Johansson went on to marry journalist Romain Dauriac in 2014 before later tying the knot with Saturday Night Live comedian Colin Jost in 2020.
Despite both remaining among Hollywood's biggest stars, neither has spoken much about their relationship in the years since their split.
That changed during a 2023 appearance on The Goop Podcast, when the Black Widow star was chatting with Gwyneth Paltrow, and her ex-husband unexpectedly came up in conversation.
Paltrow said: "Oh, that's right, because I forgot that you were married to Ryan Reynolds!" before adding: "Goals!"
Laughing, Johansson replied: "We weren't married very long, but we were when I first met you, for Iron Man or whatever."
"We love a good Ryan Reynolds in our house," Paltrow responded.
Johansson then offered a rare assessment of the Deadpool actor, saying simply: "He's a good guy."
Reynolds shares a rare comment in the joint statement
When Reynolds and Johansson announced their separation in 2010, they released a joint statement emphasizing that the decision had been made amicably.
"After long and careful consideration on both our parts, we've decided to end our marriage," they said, per Vogue. "We entered our relationship with love, and it's with love and kindness we leave it. While privacy isn't expected, it's certainly appreciated."
At the time, a source alleged: "They are being very civil about it. The big problem with their relationship is the distance. They spent a lot of time apart when they are working. She's been unhappy for a while."
What both stars said after the divorce
Following the split, both actors briefly reflected on marriage in separate interviews.
In 2011, The Daily Mail reported that Reynolds said: "I don't think I want to get married again." Of course, he later changed his mind and married Lively the following year.
Johansson also discussed the lessons she took from the experience during an interview with Cosmopolitan UK.
"Relationships are complicated, and being married is a living, breathing process," she explained. "I think I was not fully aware of the peaks and valleys. I wasn't prepared to hunker down and do the work."
Johansson married Saturday Night Live star Colin Jost in 2020.
They have kept their relationship out of the spotlight. However, one moment on SNL generated headlines after Jost delivered a graphic joke during the show's annual "Weekend Update" joke swap segment in December 2024.
The punchline referenced the actress' postpartum anatomy, prompting cameras to cut backstage to her stunned reaction.
Speaking later to InStyle, Johansson admitted she had been warned there would be a joke involving her, but was still shocked by what was said.
She described it as "so vulgar" and "really gross," adding that although she'd been told to expect a "vagina joke," she had not anticipated that particular punchline.
