Selena Gomez has emotionally opened up about being the subject of body-shaming comments on social media.

Undergoing treatment for lupus - an autoimmune inflammatory disease that affects the immune system - was a tough period for the 30-year-old singer, not just because of the bodily pain but the public scrutiny she received over her weight.

The Only Murders in the Building actress was diagnosed with the disease in 2014 and has occasionally revealed on her social media that her appearance has changed because of the different medications she takes.

While her weight gain has resulted in receiving nasty comments from trolls online, she always used her platforms such as TikTok to send messages of self-love and body positivity to her followers.

Now, in the latest episode of Apple TV+'s documentary series, Dear ..., the singer informed viewers that her weight would "constantly fluctuate," adding: "It was like they couldn't wait to find a thing to bring me down. I was being shamed for gaining weight because of my lupus."

The Rare Beauty founder then admitted that while she has previously said the body-shaming remarks didn't bother her, it was actually the opposite.

"I lied. I would go online and I would post a picture of myself and say [the negative comments] don't matter, I'm not accepting what you're saying - all the while being in the room posting that, crying my eyes out, because nobody deserves to hear those things," she said.

“I was posting these things, saying it doesn’t bother me because I didn’t want it to bother other people who are experiencing the same thing, getting shamed for what they look like, who they are, who they love," she continued.

"I just think it’s so unfair. I don’t think that anybody deserves to feel less than," Gomez added.

This isn’t the first time that the 'Same Old Love' musician has opened up about how her body has been impacted by the autoimmune disease.

During a TikTok live last month, she explained to thousands of her viewers that the prescription she takes for the incurable condition causes her to "hold a lot of water weight".

Gomez also added that by opening up with her struggles, she hopes it will "encourage anyone out there who feels any sort of shame for exactly what they’re going through, and no one knows the real story".

The 'Lose You To Love Me' musician also told her fans that her medications are "important" because it helps her, and then declared that she is "not a model," and "never will be".
