Sydney Sweeney has opened up about whether she'd ever join OnlyFans after portraying a content creator on the latest season of Euphoria.
The 28-year-old actress reprised her role as Cassie Howard in season three of the hit HBO drama, which sees the character launch an account on the subscription platform and begin sharing explicit content.
Although the storyline sparked backlash from some viewers and reignited debate over the show's graphic scenes, Sweeney said her focus was on bringing Cassie's journey to life as truthfully as possible.
Speaking to Vanity Fair, the Housemaid actress revealed that Euphoria creator Sam Levinson discussed the storyline with her before filming began.
"He sent me all the scripts, and it already had all of Cassie's scenes in it, the OnlyFan scenes, and he called me afterwards, and he was talking about it, and we (were) talking through it all," she explained.
According to her, Levinson wanted to make sure she was comfortable with the direction of the storyline. "He asked me how I felt about it, and I told him, 'Look, I'm playing a character,'" she shared.
The actress stressed that while she understood Cassie's motivations, she wouldn't make the same decisions in her own life.
"Do I agree with all of Cassie’s decisions? Would I personally make these choices? No, of course not. But I’m an actor, and that’s my job, and this is Cassie’s life, and to be able to do her justice and play her how she’s to be played is to bring Sam’s vision to life and to play Cassie in the most vulnerable and insane way possible," she told the outlet.
Sweeney said she understands how her character ultimately ended up creating content on the platform.
"From the very beginning, you can see that Cassie has this need to be loved," she said. "She has a need to be validated by other people. She doesn't know how to love herself unless someone else loves her."
"So I understand how Sam got her to where she was in season three. I think she was more excited by the idea of all these people loving her and knowing who she is and feeling like her world isn't small," she added.
Interestingly, Levinson recently revealed in an interview with The New York Times that he initially considered filming Cassie's storyline without showing nudity.
"Well, it’s funny. When I first wrote it, I was like, ‘Maybe we shoot all of this, and we don’t have any nudity. Maybe there’s ways to shoot around certain things?" he told the outlet.
But according to the showrunner, Sweeney quickly shut that idea down: "She looked at me, and she was like, 'Are you kidding? I'm playing an OnlyFans model. You're telling me you're going to like, skirt around it?' And I was like, 'Yeah, OK, that's a fair point.'"
Levinson went on to praise the actress: "I think she’s a totally fearless actor. She’s also just wonderfully professional and shows up just game every day. I adore working with her because there’s such a flexibility in terms of the performance. There’s a lot of trust that we have."
"And look, we’re tackling this world of OnlyFans where women are being paid to, like, whisper into an ear-shaped microphone. There is a level of absurdity to it that is just fun and we’re always trying to come up with ways to make it feel authentic and humorous and dramatic and also speak to the larger wants and wishes of the character," he added.
Elsewhere in her Vanity Fair interview, Sweeney reflected on the difference between herself and the characters she plays, insisting that fans often don't know the real person behind her screen roles.
"Everybody thinks they have me figured out, but they have no clue who I actually am. That’s why I love acting."
"The whole point of acting is being able to play all these different characters. It wouldn’t be fun playing myself," she added.

After facing criticism over Cassie’s OnlyFans storyline, Euphoria continued to push boundaries in its latest episode, featuring more revealing scenes involving Sydney Sweeney’s character.
During the May 10 episode of the HBO drama, Cassie expanded her online following with help from Maddie, played by Alexa Demie, by creating increasingly provocative content for subscribers.
Some of the material was portrayed as less explicit, including Cassie recording seductive voice messages and appearing on podcasts to discuss support for men’s rights.
But other scenes showed her producing more adult-oriented content, including filming sexual videos, mailing used underwear to fans, and appearing topless once again. Some scenes even showed her masturbating on camera.
The storyline also focused on Cassie’s relationship with Nate, played by Jacob Elordi, who pressures her to continue making money online so he can deal with mounting debts.
The episode quickly sparked strong reactions online, with many viewers describing it as “full-on insane.”
Although some real-life content creators criticized the way the series portrays online adult work, Sweeney has previously spoken about feeling empowered by playing Cassie and becoming more confident through the role.
Season three’s direction has divided audiences, particularly among OnlyFans creators who felt the depiction leaned too heavily into stereotypes of those actually working in the industry.
However, series creator Sam Levinson defended the controversial scenes during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
“[Cassie] has got her dog house and her little dog ears and the nose, and that has its own humor,” Levinson explained.
He added: “But what makes the scene is the fact that her housekeeper is the one filming it.”
Levinson said the intention was to create a layer of absurdity around the fantasy being shown onscreen.
“What we wanted to always find is the other layer of absurdity that we’re able to tie into it so that we’re not too inside of her fantasy or illusion,” he said. “The gag is to jump out, to break the wall.”
Director of photography Marcell Rév also discussed the visual approach behind the scenes, explaining that the production team intentionally avoided making the setting appear too polished.
“An obvious choice would’ve been something modern and very plain and fancy, but we ended up choosing this mid-century home, which is a little tacky, but also stuck in the ‘70s,” Rév said.
He admitted adapting the visual style of OnlyFans content into the show’s cinematic aesthetic proved difficult, adding: “OnlyFans has its own aesthetic and how you elevate that aesthetic to the show’s aesthetic is a challenge. I’m not going to lie.”
Despite the backlash, Levinson said the uncomfortable atmosphere was intentional.
“Some of these scenes we only lit with these ring lights that she would use,” he explained. “When you’re inside, it’s a beautiful, glowing front light, but then you jump out of it and it’s just a pool of light and everything surrounding it is dark. It’s just gnarly and jarring.”
He added: “We wanted to capture what she’s trying to show the audience and be inside of it. But then also pull back wider and see how depressing it is.”

Critics and fans of HBO hit series Euphoria have been left shocked by the latest scenes of Sydney Sweeney's character, Cassie.
Fans of the show will know how far the character will go for attention, but it seems like season three has reached a new level altogether.
The first episode all but confirmed theories of a time jump, with the edgy characters now no longer getting up to no good in high school - they're doing it in the adult world.
Many will remember Sweeney's character, Cassie, and the messy drama surrounding her life caused by insecurities and her impulses.
But while many could have predicted that years on from high school, Cassie would become an OnlyFans star, most didn't realise just how explicit the creators would be in showing this.
It looks like Cassie ended up with Nate Jacobs (Jacob Elordi) after all, but clips reveal that she has ventured into the adult world and sported a number of NSFW outfits.
A snippet from a trailer for the upcoming third season of the series depicts Sweeney, 28, dressed as a sexualised child with a pacifier in her mouth.
While it's not the only explicit outfit she sports in the trailers, it may be far and away the most offensive.
Sweeney can be seen in pigtails while lying on her back with her legs in the air, while wearing a skimpy underwear and nearly nothing at all on top, with her bare chest on show.
Cassie is believed to be a restless housewife in California, turning to OnlyFans to raise more funds for the wedding of her dreams.
She seemingly goes all-in to the venture, despite Nate's work and seemingly generous salary.
On top of the baby outfit, Sweeney also dons dog-inspired lingerie and drinks out of dog bowls for her on-screen fans.
She's also seen filming content while wearing a revealing bodysuit covered in pink polka dots while using a skipping rope.
“I just feel like if more people knew me, I would be huge,” the character can be heard saying in the trailer.
While some critics believed that the outfits were "vulgar," fans took to social media to voice their own concerns with the new season of the show.
One wrote: “Honestly, the boundary has been crossed,” while another described the outfits as "sick".
“This alone just made me not wanna watch it anymore,” a third claimed, with a different user agreeing: "We shouldn’t be okay with this… the entire production should be held responsible for this abhorrent mess."
Some questioned how they had agreed to do this in the first place, as most users agreed that it was a "disturbing" sight.
“How the hell did we come to this. Euphoria was so peak in SN 1 and 2,” one fan stated.
The actress has commented on the reaction to her character's venture into sex work, not seeming too bothered by it all.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at the season three premiere, she said: “I mean, Cassie's a crazy character. She will do anything and at all costs to be famous this season, and she makes a lot of very wild and interesting choices.
“She will not disappoint. That's for sure.”

Sydney Sweeney is once again receiving backlash for another NSFW scene in the third season of Euphoria.
Sweeney plays the troubled Cassie in the series, who has embarked on a career on OnlyFans in the HBO series.
While this may sound outlandish, the actress has bought into the idea, posing nude in a number of scenes so far in the series' run.
She may have allowed ice cream to drip down her bare chest in past episodes, but on Sunday's (May 17) episode, the actress has taken it up a level.
In an attempt to establish herself as one of the leading OnlyFans creators, Cassie appeared nude with a yellow python - because why wouldn't you?
As brave as the scene looked to film, fans were not the biggest advocates of the direction the character is continuing to take.
Appearing as Cassie, she posed nude with the huge snake wrapped around her body as part of a risqué photoshoot, orchestrated by former best friend Maddy (Alexa Demie).
As part of the shoot, Cassie even posed with Rosalía and Anna Van Patten’s characters, sporting some pink lingerie with a plunging neckline.
Once again, fans were shocked by the move, as many compared the scene to Britney Spears’ infamous 2001 MTV Video Music Awards performance with a live snake.
One fan took to X, questioning the relevance of the shot: “Cassie and that snake scene..?”
Another wrote: “What do you mean there’s a deadly snake that cassie takes pictures with?”
Euphoria's third season has received a lot of backlash from fans, as the Emmy-nominated Sweeney has already been seen dressed up as both a baby and a dog for her character's stroyline.
Sydney Leathers, a real-life OnlyFans model, criticised the show's portrayal of the profession, telling Variety that it is "infuriating."
“There’s so much that they have her doing that is not even allowed on OnlyFans, and that alone is infuriating: the age-play stuff where she’s dressed as a baby in a diaper, for example,” she explained.
As part of the scenes in question, the actress could be seen dressed like a baby with a pacifier in her mouth, while lying on her back with her legs in the air with a skimpy underwear on and her bare chest on show.
She was also later seen eating an ice cream while topless, letting the dessert drip down her breasts, later switching into a cap, shin pads, and shoes in a baseball-style nude snap.
Cassie can be seen topless while eating an ice cream as it drips down her bare chest, while she is later seen nude apart from a cap, shin pads and shoes, with her private areas covered by her hands.
But other scenes showed her producing more adult-oriented content, including filming sexual videos, mailing used underwear to fans, and appearing topless once again. Some scenes even showed her masturbating on camera.
Sweeney has previously spoken about feeling empowered by playing Cassie and becoming more confident through the role.
Season three’s direction has divided audiences, particularly among OnlyFans creators who felt the depiction leaned too heavily into stereotypes of those actually working in the industry.

Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney has revealed all in the recent episodes, but has hit back at critics over the industry’s “double standards”.
The storylines of the latest season of HBO's hit Euphoria, which follows the lives of the wild former high schoolers since graduation, have sparked major controversy.
Sweeney’s character, Cassie, begins her OnlyFans career despite getting together with Nate, played by heartthrob Jacob Elordi, while Rue (Zendaya) has run-ins with the cartel.
Cassie’s storyline requires Sweeney to wear some extremely revealing outfits, some of which have been accused of sexualizing children.
She has become a housewife in California, living with Nate, but she turns to OnlyFans to raise more money for their dream wedding.
The most jaw-dropping scene, showing Sweeney with her chest exposed and her legs open in the air, sporting pigtails and a pacifier in her mouth, is followed by dog-inspired lingerie, with Cassie drinking out of dog bowls for her fans.
In the latest episode, Sweeney turned the heat up even further in a full frontal nude scene featuring ice cream, baseball, and the American flag.
However, the 28-year-old actress, a registered Republican, is no stranger to career criticism.
Last year, her White Lotus co-star Aimee Lou Wood called her out over her response to the controversial American Eagle ad.
Despite the flak she has faced, the actress has opened up about how playing Cassie has increased her body confidence. She also remarked on the double standards there are in regards to male actors’ nude scenes.
She told Grazia: “When I saw The Voyeurs [Sweeney’s 2021 film] for the first time, I wondered if I’d done too much.
“I researched celebrities who have done nude scenes, trying to make myself feel better.”
Sweeney pointed out: “There are hour-long compilations of world-famous male actors with nude scenes who win Oscars and get praised for that work.
“But the moment a woman does it, it degrades them. They’re not actresses. They just take off their tops so they can get a role.”
She added, “I don’t think as many people took me seriously in Euphoria because I took my shirt off.
“There’s such a double standard. I really hope I can have a little part in changing that.”
The star also noted that: “When you film one of these scenes, it is so technical and so not romantic.
“There are people staring at you, there’s pads between you, there’s nipple covers and weird sticker thongs all up in your butt.”
