Robert Pattinson once admitted that one of his most awkward movie scenes was completely real, and said the experience nearly pushed him out of acting altogether.

The Batman star opened up about filming intimate scenes for 2008 drama Little Ashes, where he portrayed surrealist painter Salvador Dali. While the film failed to impress critics and scored just 24 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, Pattinson’s candid confession about what happened on set has continued to follow him years later.

Speaking in a profile for Interview Magazine Germany, Pattinson explained how filming explicit scenes became far more uncomfortable than expected, especially because he felt pretending simply was not believable on camera.

Pattinson revealed: "I once decided to quit acting; it was when I did ‘Little Ashes'.

"I played Salvador Dali and had to do a lot of scenes where I was naked, and I also had to masturbate. I mean really.

“My orgasm face is recorded for eternity."

When asked why he did not fake the moment instead, the actor gave an answer that shocked plenty of fans.

"He continued: "[It] just doesn’t work, so I pleasured myself in front of the camera."

At the time, Pattinson was still building his career before eventually becoming one of Hollywood’s biggest names through the Twilight franchise and later blockbuster roles including The Batman.

Real sex scenes in movies are more common than people think

Pattinson is not the only actor to speak openly about real intimate scenes on screen.

Actress Margo Stilley previously discussed filming 2004 drama 9 Songs, directed by Michael Winterbottom, where every sex scene in the movie was real.

She told the Irish Examiner: "People were really angry with me.

“When I did press conferences people would shout abuse at me."

Stilley later defended the project and rejected criticism surrounding the film.

"People ask me if I felt that Michael Winterbottom took advantage of me because I hadn't acted before, but they forget that I developed the character.

"It was a film about love and sex. It wasn't porn. I mean, I had sex with my boyfriend last night and that wasn't porn. It was just hot sex!"

Pattinson ultimately stayed in Hollywood

Unlike Stilley, Pattinson appeared far less enthusiastic about revisiting his experience filming Little Ashes.

Still, the actor clearly decided not to walk away from the industry after all. Since then, he has gone on to star in some of the biggest films of the last decade, transforming from Twilight heartthrob into one of Hollywood’s most recognisable leading men.

Stilley, meanwhile, remained proud of her role in 9 Songs and said: "9 Songs was a real film about love and sex, and I wanted to do that film and I am proud of it".

Kieran O’Brien and Margo Stilley went all out in 9 Songs

The 2004 film 9 Songs is often described as one of the most sexually explicit films in modern cinema. It follows a passionate relationship between a young couple from their first meeting at Brixton Academy through to their breakup. And when it comes to sex scenes, this one doesn’t hold back.

Kieran O’Brien engages in multiple unsimulated sex scenes with Margo Stilley, including oral sex and ejaculation. O’Brien said it "wasn’t difficult" for him to do and, despite the film’s controversy, he was "really proud" of it. Stilley still defends the film 20 years later.

"It's a shame that it's been torn apart into these little pieces and bastardised online, to be honest," she told LADbible.

Robert Pattinson did the real thing for Little Ashes

Before he became known for playing a sparkly vampire and later a brooding Batman, Robert Pattinson took on the role of Salvador Dali in the 2008 film Little Ashes. And in one unforgettable scene, he masturbated for real on camera.

Mark Rylance had serious regrets about Intimacy

In the 2001 film Intimacy, Mark Rylance starred alongside Kerry Fox in a raw portrayal of a casual relationship between two strangers in London. The movie includes an unsimulated oral sex act, and Rylance later admitted it was one of the hardest roles he ever took.

Willem Dafoe & Charlotte Gainsbourg (Kind of)

In Antichrist, directed by Lars von Trier, the sex was definitely real - but not by the lead actors. Body doubles stood in for Dafoe and Gainsbourg.

Von Trier said Dafoe was “too well endowed” and that showing him would confuse audiences. Dafoe later clarified: "Charlotte and I are both married and I’m not sure everybody would be cool with that."

Chloë Sevigny

In one of the most talked-about scenes of her career, Chloë Sevigny performed unsimulated oral sex on Vincent Gallo in The Brown Bunny.

In a 2010 interview, she opened up about the complicated emotions surrounding the film.

"There are a lot of emotions," she said. "I'll probably have to go to therapy at some point. But I love Vincent. The film is tragic and beautiful, and I'm proud of it and my performance.

"I'm sad that people think one way of the movie, but what can you do? I've done many explicit sex scenes, but I'm not that interested in doing any more. I'm more self-aware now and wouldn't be able to be as free, so why even do it?"

9 Songs is widely regarded as one of the most explicit films ever shown in mainstream cinemas. The film features multiple unsimulated sex scenes, with O’Brien wearing a condom on camera.

Stilley defended the film in an interview with the Irish Independent: "It was a film about love and sex. It wasn't porn. I mean, I had sex with my boyfriend last night and that wasn't porn. It was just hot sex!

"9 Songs was a real film about love and sex, and I wanted to do that film, and I am proud of it."

Lauren Lee Smith

When her agent first told her she’d have to perform live sex on camera for Lie with Me, Smith couldn’t believe it.

"Are you kidding?" was her immediate reaction. But after a chemistry test with co-star Eric Balfour, it was clear that there was chemistry, and the rest is history.

Kerry Fox & Mark Rylance

Intimacy took its title very literally. In the film, Rylance receives unsimulated oral sex from Fox - something he later said made the role one of his most difficult.

"I was convinced it was a vital story about the difficulties people face finding intimacy in a big city like London," Rylance said. "Hanif Kureishi's writing couldn't have been more intimate and revealing, but I found the making of the film and the subsequent publicity and personal attacks very, very painful. I wish I hadn't made it."

He also revealed he felt pressured into the scene: "I felt 'undue pressure' from director Patrice Chéreau to do the scene and thought that at the time I lacked the confidence to say no."

Fox, however, said it was “not one of her regrets.”

Not the headline cast of Nymphomaniac

This Lars von Trier project had everyone buzzing with its promise of real sex on screen. Shia LaBeouf even said the film had a disclaimer that “basically says we're doing it for real.”

But in the end, body doubles handled the actual sex, with the footage digitally combined in post-production.

Producer Louise Vesth explained: "We shot the actors pretending to have sex and then had the body doubles, who really did have sex, and in post (production) we will digital-impose the two. So above the waist it will be the star and then below the waist it will be the doubles."

Robbert Pattinson has proven time and time again that he will go to great lengths to convey the character he is portraying.

However, on one occasion, he opted to throw acting out the window and perform an unsimulated sex act on camera... and the performance nearly cost him his career.

The 39-year-old actor rose to international stardom thanks to his roles in the 2000s in movies like Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and the Twilight Saga.

In one scene in the movie, Pattinson had to m*sturbate - but rather than simply act like he was, he revealed he actually "rubbed one out".

Speaking to Germany's Interview Magazine in 2013, he saidL "If you google something long enough you will soon know everything there is to know about me: what I eat, what my poop looks like, with whom I’m sleeping, what my d**k looks like, even what I look like when I m*sturbate.

"Well, that might be a little exaggerated. But my orgasm face is recorded for eternity."

He then explained that trying to act like he was orgasming just wasn't cutting it - so he opted to let Mrs. Palm and her five lovely sisters go to work: "Try it. I can tell you right now, no chance. It just doesn’t work.

"So I rubbed one out in front of the camera."

But in a subsequent interview with HuffPost, Pattinson revealed that the role almost led to him quitting acting entirely.

“I once decided to quit acting; it was when I did Little Ashes," he said. "I played Salvador Dali and had to do a lot of scenes where I was naked, and I also had to m*sturbate.” He continued to narrate the incident and added, “I mean really. My org*sm face is recorded for eternity.”

Once again stressing that faking it just wouldn't cut it on camera, Pattinson added: “So, I pleasured myself in front of the camera.”

And this isn't the first time Pattinson nearly lost his career.

In an interview with GQ, he revealed that he was nearly fired while working on Twilight.

"I was 21 and kind of wanted to make it as arty as possible. So I was kind of - we had this strange tension where the studio was kind of a little bit scared to make things a little bit too emo and stuff, and I thought that was the only way to play it," he revealed, adding that he was 21-years-old at the time and felt "infuriated" while on-set.

"The scene when Edward introduces Bella to his family the first time, I remember that being the day because my agent and my manager came up as a surprise visit," Pattinson continued. "And I was like, 'Oh, hey!' I just thought everything was fine. And then at lunch, they were like, 'Okay, so whatever you're doing right now, after lunch, just do the opposite, or you'll be fired by the end of the day.'

"And I was like, 'Okay!' And so, that was the only [way] they got me to sort of smile a bit."

Considering the Twilight Saga really kicked off Pattinson's career, it wouldn't have been surprising if his hypothetical firing ended his career there and then. Fortunately, it didn't.
