Though, that wasn't the case for those attending Justin Bieber's 29th birthday party over the weekend, after guests were reportedly gifted expensive-looking souvenirs that many people believed took aim at the singer's ex-girlfriend, Selena Gomez, 30.
Several partygoers posted images holding a silver lighter that includes a cowboy hat and bears the words: "I'm so grateful that I didn't end up with what I thought I wanted."
Obviously, given the recent drama surrounding Justin's wife, 26-year-old Hailey Bieber, Selena fans were quick to hop on social media to call out the star for what looked like a cheap dig.
For those unaware, Selena and Justin were in an on-and-off relationship for seven years between 2011 and 2018. Just weeks after their May 2018 breakup, Justin became engaged to Hailey. Several months later they were wed in a New York courthouse, before having a second official wedding in South Carolina in 2019.
Fueled predominantly by netizens and media outlets who love to pit two women against each other, Hailey and Selena have had a years-long rivalry riddled with passive-aggressive comments and subtle jibes at each other since Hailey's marriage to Justin. While the pair were eventually photographed embracing at an event in October last year - seemingly burying the hatchet - their alleged feud was reignited last month after Kylie Jenner posted an image of her and Hailey's eyebrows.
Eyebrows? You ask. Yes, eyebrows. Seemingly innocent on the surface, but dig a little deeper and it did appear pretty shady considering Selena had recently posted a clip of herself after accidentally laminating her eyebrows just a little bit too much.
Anyway, everything cranked up a notch when Selena commented on an old resurfaced video of Hailey mocking Taylor Swift, writing: "So sorry, my best friend is and continues to be one of the best in the game."
Eventually Kylie and Hailey began losing Instagram followers, causing Selena to once again take the top spot for the woman with the highest follower count on the social media app.
But, back to the odd party favors, as netizens had a lot to say about them.
"This is so petty, I mean if that's the way you and your wife feel keep that petty sht to yourself lol [...] and please, you don't have to mention somebody's name or say 'who' to understand exactly what they talkin abt [sic]," someone tweeted.
Another user added: "There's no upgrade after Selena Gomez. Bieber should consider healing."
"I love Justin & Sel ( seperately) . But this makes me feel that maybe he did propose to Sel but then she rejected him. And then he had to propose Hailey lol [sic]," a further person continued.
"Admitting that your wife was your second choice on your birthday is crazy lmao selena truly lives in his mind rent free," another tweet read.
