An investigation into the death of Hayden Panettiere remains active and ongoing after an autopsy revealed no signs of trauma, officials announced. The 36-year-old actress was found unresponsive on Sunday at a South Carolina residence where she had been temporarily staying.
Emergency services rushed to the property after a 911 call reported a female in cardiac arrest at approximately 1:51PM Paramedics attempted advanced cardiac life support measures to revive her, but resuscitation efforts failed. She was pronounced dead at 2:32PM
The Greenville County Coroner's Office confirmed that an autopsy has been completed, but the official cause and manner of death remain pending further testing. According to official statements obtained by Page Six, no physical trauma contributed to her passing. Authorities have not released additional details regarding the specifics of the investigation.
Dispatch audio from the initial emergency response referenced a potential overdose and cardiac arrest. Unconfirmed reports indicated that Narcan, a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses, was present at the residence, though officials have not confirmed whether it was administered. Panettiere had traveled to South Carolina from Los Angeles with her on-and-off partner Brian Hickerson the day before the incident.
Following the news, Panettiere's father released a public statement expressing the family's deep grief. "It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen. We ask for privacy as our family takes time to process this unimaginable loss."
Panettiere previously discussed her past challenges with substance abuse, postpartum depression, and the pressures of early fame. In a 2022 interview, she recalled being introduced to substances as a teenager. "They were to make me peppy during interviews," she said. "I had no idea that this was not an appropriate thing, or what door that would open for me when it came to my addiction."
Her personal difficulties led to her sending her daughter, Kaya, to live with the child's father, former boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko, in 2018.
Speaking about that period, Panettiere said, "It wasn’t a decision I made lightly, nor was it a decision I even wanted to make." She added, "I was going through a really challenging time in my life… I knew I needed to be able to put her first so that I could get the help I needed and be the mom she needed me to be."
Panettiere had also coped with the sudden loss of her younger brother Jansen in 2023 due to an undiagnosed heart condition. She reflected on his passing, stating, "He was my only sibling, and it was my job to protect him." She added, "When I lost him, I felt like I lost half of my soul."
Her former fiancé Wladimir Klitschko shared a tribute reflecting on their history and their shared daughter. "Our family is going through a time of profound shock and grief," Klitschko stated. "The announcement of Hayden’s tragic death saddens me deeply. She left this world far too soon."
He emphasized his commitment to their daughter, stating, "Hayden was, although no longer my partner, an important part of my life and the mother of our daughter, Kaya. To our daughter Kaya, I will always speak of her mother with respect and make sure she remembers the person she was."
