President Joe Biden landed himself in hot water on Monday after he was caught by a live microphone calling a reporter a "stupid son of a b****."

The profane comment was picked up by a hot mic as reporters were being hurried out of the room by White House staff at the end of a Competition Council meeting.

While leaving the room, Fox White House correspondent Peter Doocy shouted the question: "Do you think inflation is a political liability in the midterms?"

Later that evening, Doocy appeared on Fox News' Hannity to talk about his exchange with the president, revealing that he didn't have to wait long for an apology.

"Within about an hour of that exchange, [Biden] called my cellphone and he said, 'It's nothing personal, pal,'" Doocy recalled to long-time Fox anchor Sean Hannity.

"And we went back and forth, and we were talking about just kind of moving forward, and I made sure to tell him that I'm always gonna try to ask something different than what everybody else is asking. And he said, 'You got to.' And that's a quote from the president, so I'll keep doing it," he added.

When Hannity pushed Doocy on whether Biden had actually apologized to him the reporter said: "With all this stuff going on I appreciate that the president took a couple of minutes out while he was still at the desk to give me a call and clear the air."

"I don't need anybody to apologize to me. He can call me whatever he wants as long as it gets him talking. I think that's enough. That's enough. So we can move on. We can now move forward," he added.

Doocy is no stranger to dust-ups during White House press conferences.

In January 2021, he provoked another sarcastic response from Biden when he asked him what he and Russian President Vladimir Putin had spoken about.

"You. He sends his best," Biden quipped.

Meanwhile, the Fox reporter is also well known for his spats with White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki.

Just this week, she gave a scathing response to Doocy's question about the stock market.

"Does the president think it's a big deal that today the Dow Jones is down, at one point, more than 1,100 points?" Doocy asked.

Psaki responded: "Unlike his predecessor, the president does not look at the stock market as a means by which to judge the economy."
