On March 13, 2025, an American Airlines flight bound for Texas erupted into flames upon landing at Denver International Airport, compelling passengers to evacuate onto the aircraft's wings.
The Boeing 737-800, operating as Flight 1006, departed Colorado Springs Airport at 4:37PM, en route to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.
Shortly after takeoff, the crew detected unusual engine vibrations and decided to divert to Denver as a precaution. The plane landed safely at approximately 5:15PM local time, per The New York Post.
While taxiing to Gate C38, one of the engines caught fire, leading to an immediate evacuation.
All 172 passengers and six crew members utilized emergency slides and exited onto the wings to distance themselves from the smoke and flames. Firefighters promptly extinguished the blaze. Twelve individuals sustained minor injuries and were transported to local hospitals for evaluation.
Passenger Gabrielle Hibbitts recounted the harrowing experience to CBS News Colorado, stating, "As soon as the plane landed, we smelled this weird burning plastic smell and then everybody started screaming and saying there was a fire." Her mother, Ingrid, described the moment as surreal, expressing relief that the incident occurred on the ground rather than in the air.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has initiated an investigation into the incident. American Airlines expressed gratitude towards their crew members, the Denver team, and emergency responders for their swift actions, emphasizing that safety remains their top priority.
This event is the latest in a series of aviation incidents in the United States. In January 2025, an American Airlines regional jet collided mid-air with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter near Washington, D.C., resulting in 67 fatalities.
Additionally, in February 2025, a Delta Air Lines regional jet overturned upon landing in Toronto during adverse weather conditions, injuring 18 individuals.
Despite these occurrences, aviation experts maintain that air travel remains one of the safest modes of transportation. The FAA continues to enforce stringent safety protocols and is committed to thoroughly investigating such incidents to enhance future safety measures.
Passengers aboard Flight 1006 were accommodated and assisted with their travel arrangements following the evacuation. The airline is cooperating fully with authorities to determine the cause of the engine fire and to prevent similar incidents in the future.
As investigations proceed, the focus remains on ensuring passenger safety and maintaining confidence in air travel. Both American Airlines and regulatory bodies are expected to review and, if necessary, update safety procedures to address any identified issues arising from this incident.

A video that shows the aftermath of Frontier Airlines Flight 4345's accident has surfaced, as a person was struck and killed on the runway.
The flight was trying to take off at Denver International Airport on Friday night (May 8), as ABC News reported that they were at least partially consumed by one of the engines, which caused a fire.
Audio from air traffic control revealed that the pilot said: "Tower, Frontier 4345, we’re stopping on the runway...Uh, we just hit somebody… we have an engine fire."
"We’ve got smoke on the aircraft, we’re gonna evacuate on the runway," the outlet reported.
They confirmed that there were 231 on board, and that there was an "individual walking across the runway."
The passengers evacuated the aircraft, which had caught fire, and while there were no deaths among them, at least one sustained minor injuries.
They were taken back to the terminals in buses by emergency crews, with the flight being aborted and rescheduled for Saturday morning.
The airline said on Friday night: "As flight 4345 was departing this evening from Denver International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport, the aircraft reportedly struck a pedestrian on the runway during takeoff.
"Smoke was reported in the cabin, and the pilots aborted takeoff.
"Passengers were then safely evacuated via slides as a matter of precaution.
"The Airbus A321 was carrying 224 passengers and seven crew members.
"We are investigating this incident and gathering more information in coordination with the airport and other safety authorities. We are deeply saddened by this event," they added.
ABC 7 has posted a video from one of the passengers as they were evacuating the aircraft at Denver International Airport.
Multiple people could be heard telling people to get away from the aircraft.
The Denver Fire Department rushed to the scene and extinguished the fire, though it isn't clear if it is their firefighters who are telling passengers to keep their distance.
A source close to the incident told ABC7 News that airport security was checking the east perimeter fence on Saturday morning for any potential breaches.
However, evidence suggests that the individual struck was not connected to the works taking place on an adjacent runway.
The Denver Police Department is currently supporting the ongoing investigation, though they are unable to release any more information while enquiries remain active.

The incident comes after the Federal Aviation Administration said that there has been "a disturbing increase" in the number of people acting in an unruly manner on aircraft.
Per NBC News, Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants union, said that a range of incidents have been reported by airline employees.
"What we have seen on our planes is flight attendants being physically assaulted, pushed, choked," Nelson said. "We have a passenger urinate. We had a passenger spit into the mouth of a child on board."
"These are some of the things that we have been dealing with," Nelson added, before noting that the physical abuse staff has been subjected to has been "way off the charts" in comparison to the levels experienced over the previous two decades.

A terrifying incident unfolded aboard a Condor Airlines flight when a Boeing 757 was forced to make an emergency landing after flames erupted from one of its engines just shortly after takeoff.
The plane, carrying 273 passengers and eight crew members, had departed from Corfu, Greece, heading to Düsseldorf, Germany, when it experienced a serious malfunction at 36,000 feet, per WDR.
The crisis began when flames suddenly burst from the right engine, startling passengers.
One passenger described the horrifying moment to Bild, saying: “Suddenly, the power went out for a few seconds, and we realized we were no longer climbing.”
As the plane shook and flames sputtered from the engine, many passengers feared for their lives.
One particularly terrified individual even sent out "goodbye texts" to loved ones, thinking the situation was beyond saving.
“It was an incredibly horrible experience. I already sent goodbye texts because I thought, ‘It’s over now,’” another passenger recounted.
A video shot by a fellow passenger captured the disturbing sight of flames erupting from the engine as the plane began its descent.
In one TikTok video taken by an eyewitness on the ground, the aircraft can be seen making a descent with intermittent flashes of flame coming from its engine, accompanied by loud booms.
"I was just chilling… then realized a plane was literally fighting fire in front of me," the passerby captioned the video, which quickly went viral.
According to Condor Airlines, the malfunction was caused by a disturbance in the airflow supply to the engine, resulting in a chemical reaction inside the combustion chamber.
Despite the dramatic scene, the airline assured that no one was ever in danger.
A spokesperson explained, per the New York Post: "The reason was a parameter indication outside the normal range caused by a disturbance in the air flow supply to the engine.
"Due to the fault message, it was precautionarily decided to divert to Brindisi."
The airline stressed that the engine was not on fire, only experiencing a temporary malfunction.
"A chemical reaction at the back of the engine led to the flames, but the engine itself was never on fire," a Condor representative clarified.
The flight made an emergency landing at Brindisi Airport in southern Italy just 40 minutes after taking off, at 8:15PM local time, which was a relief to the anxious passengers on board, per FlightRadar24.
The airline confirmed that all guests disembarked the plane safely.
After landing, however, the situation wasn't without its complications.
Due to limited hotel capacity in Brindisi, not all passengers were able to secure accommodations.
The airline offered vouchers and blankets at the airport, and a few shops remained open to provide supplies.
Condor also assured that passengers who sought alternative accommodation could submit their expenses for reimbursement.
The following morning, passengers were transferred to another Condor aircraft to continue their journey to Düsseldorf.
