Bill Gates names three women he had affairs with amid Jeffrey Epstein investigation
Bill Gates disclosed details of multiple extramarital affairs during a closed-door interview with the House Oversight Committee as part of a wider investigation connected to Jeffrey Epstein, according to a transcript released on Tuesday.
During the June 10 testimony, the Microsoft co-founder identified two Russian women he had relationships with, naming bridge player Mila Antonova and nuclear physicist Karima Nigmatulina.
Under further questioning from lawmakers, Gates also acknowledged a third affair involving another female scientist.
Gates has denied any wrongdoing
The billionaire has consistently denied any involvement in Epstein's criminal activities and reiterated that spending time with the disgraced financier was "a mistake".
While speaking with congressional investigators, Gates denied any sexual misconduct but admitted he may have unknowingly encountered some of Epstein's victims during meetings with the financier, adding several women and girls had worked for Epstein at the time.
He also said it was "possible" that he once confided in a mutual friend about concerns that he may have contracted a sexually transmitted disease from one of the women he had affairs with.
Earlier this year, Gates reportedly informed staff at the Gates Foundation that he had been involved in two affairs that Epstein later became aware of, although he did not provide additional details at the time.
Gates was allegedly blackmailed
During his congressional testimony, Gates suggested Epstein may have considered using knowledge of his affairs as leverage against him.
He also revealed that he had a relationship with medical entrepreneur Dr Alice Jacobs Nesselrodt before first meeting Epstein in 2011. Gates appeared surprised to learn that Epstein knew about the affair after lawmakers presented an email Epstein had sent to himself in 2013 referencing Dr Nesselrodt.
Asked about the email, Gates responded: "Well, there was a time when I had an affair with Dr Jacobs [Nesselrodt]. So that may fit that category."
Although Gates maintained that Epstein never successfully blackmailed him, he acknowledged that "it looks like Mr Epstein's brainstorming was going in that direction."
The testimony follows the release of documents linked to Epstein that revealed claims made by the financier regarding Gates' personal life. Among them was a memo in which Epstein alleged that Gates had contracted an STD after sleeping with "Russian girls" and sought antibiotics for his then-wife, Melinda Gates.
Gates strongly denied those allegations. However, he admitted that he had concerns at one point about potentially having contracted an infection.
"I never had an STD... I've said I may have indicated some concern about whether I had an STD; I don't recall that. But I never had an STD. I never gave medicines to anyone covertly," Gates told lawmakers.
According to Gates, he met with Epstein approximately "like 12 to 14 times, plus two Skype calls in total over the four-year period." He said the meetings primarily focused on philanthropy and charitable initiatives.
One meeting in particular took place in August 2013 at Gates Ventures in Seattle, where Epstein reportedly flew in to discuss a severance package involving Dr Boris Nikolic, a former Gates employee and mutual acquaintance.
During that meeting, Gates claimed Epstein made subtle references to his affairs.
"There was the veiled type of language, hey, we should all want to be friends," Gates recalled. He said he responded directly, adding: "Look, if you think you're going to get more money out of this, it's not going to happen, and if that means you go out and talk to people about things, I will just bear the pain of that and deal with it."
Gates also acknowledged that Dr Nikolic became aware of his affairs after he asked him to act as an alibi while meeting one of the women. On another occasion, he said he sent Nikolic to meet a woman because he was running late.
According to Gates, Epstein was one of only a handful of people who knew about the affairs, alongside Dr Nikolic and eventually his ex-wife.
"Maybe a therapist, but I guess I can exclude my discussions with therapists," Gates added.
Despite knowing about Epstein's previous sex offence conviction before meeting him in 2011, Gates said he believed it was worthwhile maintaining a limited relationship in the hope of securing financial support for global health and charitable projects.
However, Gates said he ended contact with Epstein in 2014 after promised introductions to wealthy donors failed to materialize.
Dr Nikolic has previously expressed regret over his association with Epstein, describing him as "a master manipulator." He added: "I now know his crimes were despicable and my heart goes out to the victims."
