Brian Laundrie, who was the only person of interest in the disappearance and death of his fiancée Gabby Petito, died by suicide - an autopsy report released on Tuesday, November 23, revealed.
The report comes more than a month after dental records showed that the remains discovered at the Carlton Reserve in Florida, on October 20 belonged to the 23-year-old fugitive.
Laundrie died after sustaining a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, the Laundrie family attorney Steven Bertolino explained.
In a statement to The Sun, the lawyer said: "Chris and Roberta Laundrie have been informed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and the manner of death was suicide."
He added: "Chris and Roberta are still mourning the loss of their son and are hopeful that these findings bring closure to both families."
The case sparked worldwide attention when Laundrie suddenly disappeared days after Petito was reported missing by her family.
The remains of 22-year-old Petito - a blogger who had recently quit her job to embark on a cross-country road trip with Laundrie - were found in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming on September 19.
Two days later, officials who had been awaiting full forensic identification of the body, confirmed that the remains belonged to Petito.
Laundrie, who was a person of interest in the case, had been missing since around September 14. His parents informed law enforcement that their son had told them he was going for a hike.
They said he left with the intention of heading to the T. Mabry Carlton Jr. Memorial Reserve near Venice - but never returned.
The engaged couple had departed from Long Island in July to start their road trip, which saw them share pictures online of national parks and hot springs using the hashtag, "van life".
In August, a witness told police he had seen the pair engage in "some sort of altercation". He said he had witnessed Laundrie "slapping" Petito in an altercation that took place just weeks before Laundrie returned to his Florida home without her.
No charges were filed that day and the pair were simply told to separate for the night. They would later reunite and continue to share pictures of their road trip. Petito died later that month and her fiancé arrived back at his Florida home without her on September 1.
